Different proxies

    Hi,

    A quick question for all you techie experts. Is it possible to configure my work PC to use different proxies for different browsers? EG I would like Internet Explorer to connect to the internet using the work proxy and I would like firefox to connect using my Meteor broadband modem while still connected to the office LAN?

    I don't think so. Windows will prioritise network connections, and only use one at a time for WAN traffic.

    There is a way around this, Use the Portableaps version of Firefox, download it into a folder and install the foxyproxy addon and configure it and send a shortcut to the desktop. Rename the shortcut, say "Firefox USA". You can a few different versions of Firefox with different proxies this way, just send their shortcut to the desktop and rename them.

    Yes, this is possible, IE and FF use different proxy settings. Leave the proxy on in IE and turn it off in FF.

    IE - Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Tick "Use a Proxy Server".

    FF - Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings > Tick "No Proxy".

    After this, you need to turn on a option called Metrics in Network Connections, it prioritises which connections are used first.

    Start Menu > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click "Local Area Connection > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Advanced > Untick "Automatic Metric > Put 2 in the "Interface Metric" field > OK > OK > Close.

    Now, this way, your LAN will only have priority when in use on it's own within Internet Explorer (I.E no Meteor Broadband dongle connected) and when the dongle is connected (and the LAN too), Firefox will prioritise the dongle. Simples!
