    Hi all,

For me it has to be:

    Family Ties
    Roseanne

I have recently be watching the first 3 series of Family Ties and it reminded me how much I really loved that show! Its still clever and funny to this day and Michael J Fox is amazing in it.

That got me thinking that alot of the modern day sitcoms don't really come close to it. There was also Roseanne which I really loved too.

So what are your favourite all time sitcoms?

    Seinfeld by far

Following that, Frasier, Friends is still watchable but some seasons are poor, can we count the Simpsons? if so then thats easily the greatest sitcom of all time

I find George's constant shouting in nearly every episode really annoying.

Anyone remember Different Strokes and Silver Spoons?

I haven't seen them in about 25 years (Gorrr.....that's scarey) and I'd probably think they're crap if I saw them now...but absolutely LOVED them when I was a child.

Would love to see a rerun!

    Cheers for me too.

First four seasons of Friends is some of the best written comedy ever. After that, it all went downhill. :( I haven't seen enough of Frasier to rank it highly enough but every episode I saw I liked.

Arrested Development would have to win it for me though; I love how it manages to be so intelligent and surreal/off the wall at the same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,844 ✭✭✭py2006

I did love Friends at the time but it has been re-run to DEATH!! I can't bare to watch it now!!

The same with the Simpsons, that programme has really lost it for me!

I forgot about Married with Children, that was great!

Somebody also mentioned Different Strokes, that was great too!

It's Always sunny in Philadelphia, Seinfeld, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, We Can Be Heroes & I'm Alan Partridge. Can't really pick a favorite from that list, all superb.

Isn't it interesting that the vast majority of people opt for American sitcoms!

Strangely, I automatically thought only of American sitcoms and didn't even notice until you pointed it out!

Black Books would probably be my favourite non-American sitcom, but Arrested Development just about trumps it.

Its interesting only to the point that the best of US sitcoms are better than the best of British. But Only Fools and Horses, The Office and I'm Alan Partridge are without doubt better than a lot of US offerings, including Friends, Two n Half Men and Malcom in the Middle, IMO.

I don't usually find English sitcoms particularly funny! Apart from Fawlty Towers and Some Mothers Do Have Them.

Yea, apart from her natural attributes she is actually a good actress and steals the show when she is on.

Series 4 was the best, because of her....a lovable airhead, funny as hell....you'd get endless jokes outta her character. In real life she's uber intelligent.

Frasier, Father Ted and Fawlty Towers: I can't choose one favourite.

What is it with sitcoms beginning with the letter 'F'?

(Friends not included though...I've never been a fan.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

Spin City (first 4 seasons) iRichard Kind is absolutely priceless in this..
Friends (first four seasons)classic and original comic writing

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 188 ✭✭powerfade

For me it's got to be Fawlty Towers, only 12 episodes made, all of them comedy gold. My favourite scene of all below.......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8 sweetcdimplebum

Yea...Married with Children has to be one of the best sitcoms ever on tv!!! Also...Friends...Family Guy...(if that counts) and definately Two and a Half Men has to be the best one of this era!!!:P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭A Disgrace

I know everyones opinion is different, and warrented, but some of the choices baffle me? Yes, I appreciate the oldies, like Cheers and MASH etc, but they have seriously dated and I think sitcoms have come a long way since..

Again, we all laugh at different things, and that's cool but I cannot for the life of me understand the Two and Half Men gig. Yes, it's a gag a minute, but they're weak at best and it's pretty much the same story over and over.. In fact, the only joke I dig from Two and a Half is when Charlie says something like 'I'm going upstairs to change' and comes back down in exactly the same shirt he's been wearing for 6 series! And that's not even meant to be a joke!

I'm genuinely lost here folks! (And as I'm currently writing a sitcom, I'm wondering if these are the shows I should be studying, rather than the 'alternative' types like Peep Show and Spaced)

On the plus side, nobody has said 'My Family' yet, so there's hope.
