    Elvis,

One of the better value and well organised races. Go for it.

I'm looking into doing this too. My first ever race was the Jingle Bells 5K there a couple of weeks ago. Looking forward to this one!

Only new to running, (ie only been running for 12 weeks) and the longest distance I've run so far is 6km. Do you think I'll be able for the 5 mile (8K) by the end of Jan?

No bother - just keep up the training, especially in Jan and you'll be grand. Adreniline alone should get you through that extra 2K if you hadnt run past 6 K by then, but you will.

Superb race all round, run in my backyard. I imagine it'll be a goal race for a lot of people in these parts

Has the fee for this risen dramatically in the last few years? Perhaps this is justificable by the inclusion of chips more recently....but I think the new on the day fee of 30 Euro is a bit much. I can see how they'd want to encourage people to have entered beforehand (for 20) and I always have done, but 30 is a bit steep.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

I think the 30 euro fee is a way of allowing entrys on the day but putting in a high price so very few will do it.

Its like if i'm working and someone asks me to play for an extra hr. Instead of saying no i just say 200 euro and they say eh its ok.

I've travelled up the last 2 years to do this race and its one of the best organised races in the country, fast too.

would this ever sell out? want to wait until closer to the date before entering to see how training is going etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,435 ✭✭✭christeb

don't think there's a max, its certainly never sold out before

I think you're right about the price - it must have shot up recently. I always liked the way that races organised by clubs seemed to be the lower end of the price spectrum but even €20 is stretching into the "every one else is charging x for races so why can't we?". I personally don't like paying more than €15 for a race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,724 ✭✭✭kennyb3

agree re the price - look at the craughwell race 10 miles and only €20. also they've limited places (500) yet still only charge €20. surely raheny will have far more tahn 500 and thus there would be some sort of economies of scale

You're right, normally have ~1,500 (IIRC). I'll ask Pat next time I'm in the clubhouse

Hi all, I'm new to running also have never ran in any race or event to date.

Just started two weeks ago running using the runnersworld beginners 8 week program. Going well so far do you think this sort of race is good for beginners ? Living in Clontarf so handy for me.

The goal is to run the Dublin Marathon 2010 (must be nuts but doing it for a good cause)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭Peckham

neonman - this race would be perfect for you. There's a huge variety in the field, from top class national guys right through to fun-walkers.

Just make sure you position yourself in the right place at the start - don't go too close too the front as it will go off like a greyhound race there (which means you'll either kill yourself starting too fast, or could fall and get trampled). Just ask others around you at the start what time they're doing and you'll find the right place for yourself.

Thanks for the tips Peckham. Looking forward to it. I go running along the coast road (Clontarf) for training, there is a running club that goes running along there from Rahney they make running look effortless.

Trick neoman is to find a runner who is running at pace same as yourself. Its all about pace. Re the course, you will probably be coming up a hill at watermill road by st annes which is near the end of the course so conserve your energy before that. A great race and the goodie bag is great. Still have the plaque at home.

    It's basically this

Three main stretches really. The Howth road part which is flat and then downwill, Avenue which is mostly downhill. Last part is tough as you go down the coast road and then up the hilly part of Watermill road.
That said would not obsess too much about route if this is your first race. Part of the fun is to head into the unknown. Good luck on the day anyway.

Just had a glance at the thread from last year and it reminded me how busy it can get at the start of this one. Have to watch yourself at the start in the crowds and then push on later once you get a bit of space making use of all that spare energy you'll have from having to go a bit slower at the beginning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,931 ✭✭✭az2wp0sye65487

As this is my first 5 mile, I'm just looking forward to the day and setting an official time to aim to beat next time!

I've a question I'm hoping some of you here may be able to answer...

I decided to start collecting sponsorships for this race, and I've raised a few quid (nothing major) that I'd like to donate to a particular dept. in a particular hospital.

Will this be as easy as just ringing them up and letting them know what I've collected and ask for their bank details so that I can transfer it? Or make out a cheque & send it to them?

Yeah i remember that from the last time i ran it. The first couple of corners are tricky but once you get out onto the Howth road just after the village it opens out. You running wednesday night? . (Raheny winter league 2 miler)

wonder what route they will be taking. A lot of roadworks on the howth road at the moment.

Anyone know how late you can leave it to pick up your race number? I'm not planning on showing up five minutes beforehand, but should I leave 30 minutes? 60?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,552 ✭✭✭chinguetti

The start is a bit mad alright due to the sheer numbers and there was a pothole after 200 yards if my memory is right. Once you have gone pass the first mile, the crowd eases out.

Doubt i'll do anything close to 32.31 like last year as a bit behind after the bad weather but i shall try!

See my link at the top of the thread. We turn left after the Texaco, won't be affected by the road works

Hi Christeb. Is the run all on footpaths, or are there sections of closed roads?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

It's on the roads, although I don't remember them actually being fully closed last year. No taking shortcuts across the footpaths. ;)

Some roads are fully closed (near start / finish) and the rest are on half closed roads. The field will be big, so don't worry about having to squeeze onto any paths etc

hard to know which route they are going to take because a lot of road works going on by Texaco garage end of howth. So hard to know how they are going to negotiate that obstacle to get on to Vernon Avenue which is route I took last time I ran it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 243 ✭✭foleyalan

Are all them road works not on the paths?. We will be running on the road at that Stage. They are still going left at the road works, down Vernon Ave. No change to any of the route.

just wondering - would any of you guys be interested in pics of this ? I know its only a couple of days away - but I can give a shout out to a number of other photographers who could turn up and try to shoot as many people as possible at different locations.

throw them up on a website to download (obviously for a couple of quid ... €5 and you print it yourself or €8-10 printed and posted to you) .... would you guys be interested ?

I just made the figures up - but they seem fair enough...plenty of first timers and I'm sure the organisers would be grateful if they knew all the runners could get a picture of themselves if wanted...at a proper price not this silly marathonpix prices.
