Hi Daniboo, I had a large dark brown mole removed from my neck a few years ago. It wasn't raised and was about the size of a 50c coin. I had the surgery done by a cosmetic surgeon in Beaumont Hospital. The mole was under my right ear. The surgery took about ten-fifteen minutes- unfortunately the mole was quite deep so the surgeon made a deep almond shaped incision and as vile as it sounds, literally "scooped" it out *shudder*. I was under local anaesthetic and am a terrible patient, but the surgeon and nurse were very soothing and talked to me calmly about everyday things throughout the procedure. She used dissolvable stitches and I was left with about a 2.5cm scar that initially was red (for about three-five months) and faded with time. It's now whitish in colour and not noticeable at all. You can use things like Bio-Oil to aid the healing process and prevent scarring. I didn't bother since my hair often covers it. You'll be fine, and won't be left with any major marks- nothing that isn't very little and can't be covered up with a wee bit of concealer!

Hey op I had a few moles removed last year one of which was on the side of my jaw/chin area, nobody could notice it but it annoyed me. It took all of 20 minutes to remove 4 moles from my body.

Was a great plastic surgeon in The Hermitage I went to and Im actually after making another appointment with him to have another procedure done after xmas he was so nice and gentle, like the above poster I am a terrible patient and this guy was so nice. :D

Did it cost much? Did you need to go to a doc first or just go direct to hermitage?

I got one taken off my upper arm about 18 months ago. It was about the size of a 1-cent coin, but deep. Unfortunately my skin stretched or something, so I've got a large almond-shaped scar now that's almost more obvious than the mole was. My brother's skin heals the same way - it seems to be a genetic thing.

Hey OP,I had a large mole removed from the side of my face when I was 17. I always hated it and wanted it removed before I went to Uni! Also I am very pale and theres a history of skin cancer in my family so it was important to get it removed from such a sun exposed area.

I took Arnica for two weeks before the operation as this helps reduce bruising and scarring. I got the op done in London by a plastic Surgeon called Norman Waterhouse. I think getting a mole removed from your face is a lot different from your arm or elsewhere so its important to get someone who specialises in facial plastic surgery in a public/private hospital.
The op only took 10-15 minutes and they just put local anesthetic on the area to be removed. I couldnt feel anything at all. I then went in a week later to get my stitches removed.
I then was recommended to rub vit E oil into the scar every night and this really helped

Just edit to say: Yes I was happy after getting it done. It was something I was very conscious off my whole life growing up. Somedays I miss it as It did make me unique. I often find myself looking at people with moles similar to mine and they give me a dirty look thinking I am staring at their mole, but really Im just thinking about if I stil had mine. I think though from a health point of view its important to get moles removed from your face. Skin Cancer is really on the rise here and so its important to take these preventative measures

I had a huge one on my back.

Had an op to get rid of it. No it wasnt painful, but it did leave a big scar.

Good thing I got rid of it too, cuza the doc said it was possibly cancerous. I'd have cancer by now if I did and I feel much better about myself!

Gp first and he sorted it out but the doc I saw in the hermitage will see you without a doctors note. It was about 200 for the consultation and my VHI covered most of the op!

This is another big deciding factor for me. The mole genuinely doesn't bother me, I often find myself laughing at people who are like would you not get that removed, it doesnt bother me so can't understand why its an issue for them. I actually had a fella tell me it was sexy before. The thing that bothers me about it is quite dark unsightly hairs grow from it. I might be able to get lazer treatment done on it but this will be a long painful process. The skin cancer of course is another issue. I'm actually paranoid that if I get it removed it will draw more attention, people saying "Oh, there's something different about you and stuff." That probably sounds stupid

I had a couple removed off my head, did it under a general, and I now have a tiny bald patch where my hair didn't grow back! The doc said the same thing to me, that if they weren't removed I would have been in trouble a couple of years down the line

It was wierd when I got mine removed loads of people didnt even notice :) Only my family commented cos they knew I was getting it done. My friends knew that I was a bit conscious of it so didnt say much to me after I go it off.

I think thats great that your happy with your mole, they do make you unique!
However, from a health point of view I think its important to get facial moles removed. I would really, really disagree with getting laser hair removal treatment on a mole. The safest thing to do with hairs on a mole is just to trim them,I wold even hesitate plucking them tbh.

I actually shave mine and I got lazer treatment done on my face and the lady that does this shaves it for me. Its much handier.

princess-lala, would you mind telling me the name of the consultant that you saw in the Hermitage? I had a look at the list and there are a few who might do that type of procedure, so I wouldn't know which one to chose.
    Thanks :)

There are only 2 plastic surgeons in The Hermitage, the one I have seen is Dr. Eamon Beausang. You dont need a GP referal letter for him either.
