Might give it a bash this year if I'm not in Leeds, haven't done a 5k in years, only a week after Barcelona though...

Think i'll do this one this year, going to stick my neck out here and say i'll go sub 19... feck that 20 min target that I can't seem to break...

Think I'll also do a bit of neck-sticking out and say 23.30 target for this one - it's a bit flatter than the Jingle Bells if I remember correctly. Just hope I don't end up with a mad toothache just before it this year!

It was a damn fine race earlier this year, and if I weren't in the same boat as RacoonQueen, on the back of Barcelona marathon, I'd be really looking forward to this one.

Maybe if I run into the race, run the 5k and then run home again. Around 23 miles?!

Great little race indeed, it's nice to run at that speed around the city streets.

ideal race to target a pb, fast flat course round the south city.

Doesn't seem to be linked. You can register here:

Though the map seems to point to Dawson Street in Washington, USA!

1000 euro for winning. Should be loaded. About time decent money put up for the efforts put in to win something like this.

Nice one, I think I'll have a go at this too. I'm doing the "Tom Brennan New Years Day 5km", so it'll be cool to see my improvement...if any:(

Only race I have signed up for that is on before the Ballybunion Half Marathon.

Anyone have a map of the route?

Anyone know what the start´s like in this? Lots of people? Could it be a good one to try for a PB?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Yep, lots of people, but not massive crowds like the 'great' Ireland 10k. It's definitely a good one for a pb as its very flat.

    Bump

So who is still up for this? I registered about a month ago. Recent Ilness and Injury will probably scupper my chances of a big PB, but will still probably run it on sunday anyway.

Not me, unfortunately :( Would absolutely love to be doing it, but doctor says no. It was a very enjoyable race last year, and it's a really flat course so pretty good for a PB too.

This is my first ever race so I'm really excited about it (and just a little bit freaked). I did the Couch to 5K a few months ago and can run 5k on a treadmill easily enough now, but did a practice run in my local park last week and found it much tougher (damn those real world slopes!). Did it in 29:50, which I was happy with - I want to finish it in under 35 mins, but my secret goal is to do it in under 30.

Was wondering if anyone has any advice/tips for the race, especially about things like whether to run the day before or not, and what to eat on the morning of the race. Also someone mentioned that it's a pretty flat course - are there any hills at all that I should be looking out for? Forewarned and all that...

Edit: Wait, I just saw rainbow_kirby's post about it being a really flat course so ignore my last question!

If it's your first race, I'd run tomorrow but take Saturday off. On the morning of the race, just eat your normal breakfast but make sure you eat it at least 2 hours before the race start time.

Good luck, and I'm sure you'll make the sub-30 :)

If you can run under 30 over 5k in a park, you will have no trouble on race Day, as you will learn, adrenaline in the race with all the people around you will make you run faster than you thought you could.
As RK said, have your normal breakfast a good few hours before the race. For 5k your muscles should be holding plenty of Glycogen to get you through.

Apart from that just enjoy yourself, don't fly out too quickly, try to keep an even pace and push on at the end if you have any reserves in the tank.

This is only my 3rd race, my first being the Jingle Bells 5K in December. What I'd say is DON'T be put off by the sight of a lot of serious looking athletes on the day. There are a lot of decent runners at each race, but don't be intimidated, and just concentrate on enjoying the day.

    Remember: (Taken from this thread)
Races are a big deal. Races are the culmination of all the forces that have brought you here:

desire, commitment, focus, sacrifice, suffering, self-discipline, hard work, responsibility. You race because you are invested in effort, and you are invested in success. Moreover, you are invested together.

Look around you. Go ahead. Do it. Look around.

Who are those people you see? Do you think they are your opponents? People who oppose your quest for excellence? Well, they aren't. They are not your opponents. They are your fellow competitors. In fact, they are your co-conspirators, for to compete is to enter into a conspiracy. The conspiracy is revealed in the word itself: compete, which comes from two Latin roots, com (CUM) and petere (PET-ER-AH), which mean "to strive together".

Al Oerter, the 4-time Olympic gold medallist in the discus, once said: "I've never competed against anyone in my life. I've always competed with people. To compete against people is a negative thing. To compete with people is a celebration, a celebration of human capability."

Might first ever race also, since taking up running in February. Hopefully do it sub-30, but at that would the tumbleweed be blowing across Dawson St by the time I finish

Last year, there were about 950 finishers, and 30 minutes would have got you in the top 750.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭The Wexican

Yikes. I suppose I have to start some place. My only hope is that maybe when running with others it will spur me on to a quicker time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

You probably will go faster than that.

But, at our level, it's not a competition you know? It's not like either of us is going to be on the podium at the end.

Running it as my first race in over 20 years, very excited, and glad to hear the course is flat :D

Thanks for all the tips folks, much appreciated. Equal parts psyched and nervous about it now. One final question: Are there lockers or anything like that, or should you just bring bare minimums with you? Can't find anything about it on the website.

No lockers but should be some supervised bag drop off. I would suggest still bringing the bare minimum. Best of luck in the race.

Great race, really enjoyed it, 26:35 for me. Delighted with that as had 27:30 in my head as a time I'd be happy with!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,915 ✭✭✭✭menoscemo

Yeah, echo that. Well organised and good to see another race that starts exactly on time. 20:56 for me, delighted to take a minute off my PB given recent injury.
Only gripe would be a lack of KM markers, only saw one at 1km and another at 4km and both were about 100m out according to my Garmin (first was at 1.1km and the 4k marker at around 3.9km)

you saw more than me,i didn't see any markers and was very glad to have my garmin.
    26.20 for me,my best yet.
really enjoyed the run,it was great to register and not have to walk for ages to the start.

Great race today. Highly recommend it for the atmosphere and the organisation was excellent as well (not to mention the tea and biscuits afterwards :o). Finished in 17:41 which was a PB for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭Oisin11178

19.33 for me. first time under 20:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

Really liked it too - though the km markers weren't very obvious, only spotted the first one because I heard someone point it out.
    I don't think I managed to break 25, but still a pb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭DigiJem

Well done to organisers, a brilliant day, great atmosphere, even the weather played ball. My target was to run under 30, did 27:21 which I'm chuffed with. Its great to run through street that I'm normally stuck in traffic on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,552 ✭✭✭chinguetti

19.38 for me so Oisin you must have been just in front of me. Glad with that as more focused on the half in Larne next week. The weather was summer like which was a bit of a shock.

Well organised as last year. Spotted all the markers but they were tiny and the 3k marker was covered by balloons. Didn't they have bigger ones last year?

This was my first ever race!! Did it in just over 33 mins and pleased as punch with myself coz I only started running about 3 weeks ago!! It was a great morning, really well organised! Hopefully next year I'll have shaved a few mins off my time. :D

Definitely going to do the Bupa 10K in April and possibly the one in Limerick on the May bank holiday!

You were not wearing a red top were you?

First race in 6 months :o, really enjoyed it, weather was gorgeous, hopefully setting me on the road to a few more races. No idea of time yet, forgot to set watch, I think better than last years time but a far way off my PB.
