Was in tesco the other night grabbing a few packs of nuts and the likes when soya mince caught my eye. 375g for less than €2. this stuff looks like crushed bran.
read the back and saying it has a basic breakdown of 50% protein, 25% carb and very little fat.

    3 questions.

whats anyones opionion of this stuff, what exactly is it?

is the estogren (sp?) content of this quite high?

anyone use it to make stuff and how?

    cheers

I think you just soak it and use in like you would mince. After soaking up water the protein % will drop, so turkey/lean beef mince might have as much protein.

I read something at the start of my weight loss, about how soya can give normal blokes man boobs - I'll see if i can dig it out -
my opinion since then has been that its not cool, not cool at all - i used to have Soya pretty much all my life before i started to lose weight, I had out of proportion man boobs back then, I realise this is anecdotal proof and as such, not proof, but interesting none the less

soya increases estrogen in men, its been proven.

bought some of that mince in health store once. felt sick after a bowl of it and threw the rest out. its the same stuff thats in pot noodle. (didnt know about the man boob thing at the time)

Yep, Oestrogen City is the auld Soya...

Muscle and Fitness had a thing about it a few months back, as did Bodybuilding.com.

Steer Clear, it's for Vegetarians and Hippys! ;)

Whoops, the new M&F magazine had a new study in it saying it's not actually that detrimental!

Can you post up a link to that? Wouldn't mind having a read of the study, I don't know much about soya and I hadn't heard that before. Cheers.

theres plenty of studies online. the moobs comment is a humorous exaggeration,
    soya can lower testosterone production.

Thanks for those. Had a read of both of them, not exactly blown away by the results. Bit of an overstatement by the second group seeing as they only used 12 guys and had no control. Anywho, I'm not trying to argue about it. I thought I'd have heard about the Testosterone effects if it were firmly established.

I don't eat soya products so it doesn't really affect me but it's interesting to know there's research out there on it. Thanks again for the studies.

Soya products are killing the planet.

Sweeping, I know, but there is a lot of forest being stripped around the world to grow soya for feed and food.

sure cattle are doing the same

Indeed, tis a complex issue and probably not for the fitness forum.
Suffice to say the effect of cattle is less than Soya and changes in practice can lead to cattle self-sufficiency. Same can't be said for Soya beans

Soya is mostly consumed in Asian countries, they seem to be doing ok with reproduction, and i'm pretty sure not all of the men have boobs.

While i know studies seem to indicate soya lowers testosterone, this can be a bit skewed as most soya consumers are vegetarians, and as such would have a slightly lower testosterone levels from their lowers intake of meat and fats.
