So thats it now for god knows how long. He's taking an indefinate break from golf after his 'infidelity'.

This isnt going to go away and as soon as he decides to come back, if he ever does come back, the media will be on it again be that 6 months or 6 years.

What will this mean for golf? Prize funds falling? Less TV coverage? More excitement in golf or less? Will someone be able to knock him off the top spot this time? Are Ireland guaranteed a major winner this year?

    Discuss!

I dont blame him, its one way at getting back at the media who will now have bit of the hand that feeds many of them, especially sports journalists. i dont condone what he did but the savage way the media have dealt with it is a disgrace, journalism is in the gutter!!

Sad news, but it's all of his own making. Rumours in the tabloids that he's been given an ultimatum by the wife to give up golf, or lose her. Another rumour is that she's bought a house in Sweden and the two of them are going to move there.

I don't think he's doing this as a way of avoiding the media. I'd say it's more to do with trying to save his marriage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭marbar

did he really say he's taking a break?
that's sad. a victim of his own profile in that respect. unless you've done something totally unspeakable, your private life should not affect your professional career

Does this mean another great year for Harrington and more majors?

In all fairness I'd have to say I think he'd pick golf over his wife. It's not like he really seems to care about her anyway! Ha

Sure golf haas been his life since he was 4 or something!

There are kids involved. I'm sure he wants to be around to see them grow up and not just have the odd visitation right for every third weekend.
Or if she moves back to sweden maybe only see them during summer months

I'd say these things are playing on his mind too.

be back for the masters at the beginning of April

    I assure you.

Butch Harmon in 2004 on Tiger Woods:

'Tiger Woods is a person who likes to control everything he does. He's changed over the years. He's matured. Whether for better or worse, time will tell. He's a person who likes everything he does now to be his idea, his decision'

Perhaps Tiger is taking time out as he is in treatment for sex addiction.

This is terrible news. It was bad enough when he was out with the injury. Golf has lost one spectator for the future. I'll look up the results but i certainly won't be watching the pga tour on sky. There is nobody on tour who brings the level of excitement he does. I'm hugely disappointed by this and just hope firstly he does come back and secondly he comes back before the masters. Golf is Tiger Woods and is nothing more than a sham without him.

Woods not playing will have an impact but it's not the end of the world! Do you think when he retires for good that they'll just close down the pga? Life goes on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭ant043

no golf will go on when he does retire and hopefully someone will be there who can take up his mantle when he does retire. But looking at the top 10 or 20 in the world currently i don't really see anyone. I think woods has one less major than the total from the 19 players below him. Thats pathetic. I admit i probably went too far when i said that golf would be a sham. I'd only seen the news about an indefinite leave of absence and was a bit disappointed to say the least. But for me one of the great things is watching him while playing especially in the majors. It's great watching him while he is attempting to break nicklaus's major record and is now probably in his best golfing years. Just hope thats it not going to be for a whole year like some reports are saying. And you have to admit at this moment in time golf is a going to be a far poorer game without him. Anyone who doesn't is just delusional imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,361 ✭✭✭f22

I agree the game is better with him but it wouldn't hinder my interest in any way. I'd be surprised if he wasn't back for the masters and I will welcome his return.

His behavior has been pretty deplorable and his head in the sand approach has only served to feed the media frenzy. No matter how long he stays away his return will only ignite the fire all over again.

If he does take a year out the major wins without him will no doubt have a slight cloud over them but that won't stop me from enjoying them.

    Roll on Augusta!

No golf fan wants to see Woods out of the game for long. It will make for a refreshing change, however, especially on the american networks coverage. Maybe now other players will get equal billing.

Ha yes... you've just sealed the deal for me.... sky sports will be making a return.
Looking forward to seeing him come back to play again too...

I think we're all golf fans here and it is definitely a sad day when Tiger takes a break.

Golf was definitely not as exciting the last time although it was great for us with Harrington.

Tournaments are always better in my opinion when, on the back nine on Sunday, Tiger is invariably fending off a challenge from a couple of guys.

this is what Peter Alliss of the Beeb thinks:

"He is undoubtedly the biggest figure in golf and has been for the last 10 or 12 years and he would be sorely missed but the game's been there for hundreds of years and it's gone on.
    _44544755_woods05_512x288.jpg
Archive - Tiger magic in 2005

"We've had our champions and great players, men and women over the years, who've stood the passage of time and they've come sailing through and there've been ups and downs.
"He will of course be missed, the sponsors would miss him because it's a proven fact when Tiger plays more people watch the television, there are more column inches written in the papers, and he's just a star performer but it's been coming for a year or two.
"He's been gradually deteriorating, his temperament. If you're an observer of life, and I think I am, the signs have been there and there's been trouble for some time, it's all blown up now and it's all a bit messy and horrid and I just feel sorry for him."

We may not see him again for at least 5 years.

Time for the likes of Rory to step into the void.

Life goes on and so will golf.

More stupid statements from you. He is without doubt the best there has ever been, but as many have commented life and golf goes on. It won't stop me playing or watching golf. Tiger has raised the bar and the current crop of Pro's have improved and they are great to watch, so while he will be missed, golf will not be a far poorer game, it may not have some of the excitement he brings but there are plenty of good golfers to watch and enjoy, Rory McIlroy, Ross Fisher, Anthony Kim, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, Phil Mickleson, Steve Stricker, Padraig Harrington. To be honest if it was coming down the stretch and an Irishman was in contention I think most of us would get huge enjoyment out of that, more than if it were Tiger, and I don't think thats delusional either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

Life is fragile. David Duval was world number one and playing superb golf. However almost overnight all that ended. Payne Stewart was up in the top 5 (I think) and his life was suddenly ended. John Daly kinda self-imploded. Often age catches up with the best.

Life goes on and so will golf. Prize money will go down but things will find a new level.

Not really, he won no majors last year so theres no guarantee that he would win any of them next year either.

i'd be surprised if he's out for 5 years - maybe the rest of this season perhaps but he'll be back playing again in the not too distant future if he has the courage to do so, but given the fact that he hasn't had the courage to show his face in public for the last two weeks then maybe he doesn't. so yeah maybe 5 years so........

The whole thing is a bit OTT to be honest. Countless numbers of premiership players cheat on their wives, as do actors etc. Its a sad part of celebrity culture, but why should Woods be made a scapegoat.

To be honest I'd be very surprised if he wasnt at the Tee box at Augusta in April.

" ...was always seen as a player who had everything, he long ago complained that his life was far from balanced. "The biggest mistake I made," he said, "was to start playing professional golf when I was still only 16. I lost all my growing-up years. I haven't lived a normal life."
    Not Tiger, Seve Ballesteros.

its a dark day for the pga tour... theyre going to have a lean time of it until TW returns.... Tiger Woods isnt golf however.

i cant wait until augusta regardless of TW's absence. Look forward to his return hoping he can maintain his incredible thirst for success. Hopefully when he does return we'll see a more of tiger the person and not this marketing cipher who talks without saying anything.

I've never been a big fan of Tiger Woods. I respect him for being the best in the world but I would always support the underdog, thats me. However I am caught between two minds about him - on the one hand I think he has acted like a spoilt brat but on the other I worry about his mental state, he is obviously not happy and is under (and always has been) immense pressure. There is no doubt he has enriched our viewing of golf and I hope he is back soon.

I'm sure he's worried. When you have as much money in the bank as him one sponsorship contract isn't going to break you. They'll be queueing up again in a couple of months time.

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

I'd agree. The money is not an issue anyway and if he returns to winning ways then sponsors will form an orderly queue.

I cant see Tiger staying out of the game for years on end. I think it will kill him not being able to play in the masters and the open etc. year after year. For every harrington, furyk, mickleson etc etc. that wins these majors while he is away it will grate on him as he will be sure he would have given them a run for their money had he been playing. He is so close now to Nicklaus record that he wont leave his career on just 14 major wins and the game of golf could pass him by if he isnt competing for the next few years. Not to say he cant come back and still win, but it will be a lot tougher to win majors if his closest rivals are gaining experience and confidence through victorys gained on the back of his absence. Also i dont think he'll give up his world number 1 ranking so easily either. If this is the wifes idea for him to give up golf, id say he will resent her more than ever and will want a divorce anyway come masters sunday should he not be there.

i find it hard to believe myself but it really its anybodies guess isnt it.

i would have thought he'd take 12 months off as a gesture of his intent to his wife & family. Surely the masters is too soon... maybe the Open.

News coming from the states is that Mickleson has waded in with some very critical remarks of TW.... to be aired on primetime tv.

Also, Steve williams says he was totally unaware of any shenanigans. Now that is hard to beileve.

tiger should just get back to playing golf, trying to save his "sham of a marriage" is a waste of time , no marriage could survive that amount of cheating. the sooner he comes back the better for golf, for him,and his soon to be x wife.

Couldn't have put it better myself, if she stays with him I think it willbe worse for him. Pay her off and do what's best for the kids, nothing worse than a loveless relationship.

He needs to get his head out of his ass and just face the music and move on. Staying away isn't going to make anything vanish.

I will miss the excitement that TW brings to the game and hope his break from the game is a short one. I think that the true golf fans will still watch whatever golf thats on and support what ever events they can with or without Tiger Woods. Imo the most exciting and entertaining golf tournament of the past decade was the 2009 open championship at Turnberry where Watson and co had a worldwide audience on edge for the weekend, even non golf fans were intrigued. I'll be at St Andrews in july, I just hope there will be two TW's there for the week;)
