That film was terrible, and I'll never get those three hours (although it felt like six) back.

EDIT: In response to the question. I've got a few favourites. The usual contenders ya know, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Star Wars Trilogy.

Best movie? Life of Brian or The Big Lebowski. Every line is genius.

Has to be Shawshank Redemption. I've never come across a film that is as watchable as it is. Utterly amazing. I'm actually trying to write why i love it so much, and i cant really think of anything in particular that makes it so good. Its just an amazing film. The script, the acting, the music. Everything.

Exactly, it is definitely the best film ever made. Toy Story is a very close second though, followed by the Directors Cut of Almost Famous, Goodfellas and All The Presidents Men.

La vita e bella- How one movie can be so sad and funny at the same time.

Glengarry Glen Ross- In my view the best exhibition of pure acting I have ever seen by Al Pacino, Jack Lemon and Alec Baldwin

Full metal Jacket- IMO best war movie of all time

Trainspotting- Great acting and brought the results of heroin to the forefront

Ask me to pick my top ten films, and I will give different lists almost each time I am asked.

Ask me to name my number one film, and you get the same answer every time.

    Seven Samurai.

A wonderful film that I get something new from each and everytime that I watch it.

It really does have everything, and the final battle is amazing, but made more so by the near perfect character growth that came before it.

    Lost in Translation.

If I could only pick one, Lost In Translation. I just like to hang out with Bill in Tokyo now and again.

Shawshank Redemption - Everything about this film is great. Can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be in most peoples top 5

Glengarry Glen Ross - An acting masterclass. Every line delivered perfectly. Every character instantly believable. Every moment is a joy to watch

Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Watching this right now coincidently. Funny, well acted, great comic timing from a dream pairing of John Candy and Steve Martin. But also very touching and moving too. Brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,439 ✭✭✭Skinfull

    Halloween. 1978. John Carpenter.
Perfect example of how a horror can be effective with music, tension photography and acting all just falling into place. Love it. Watch it all the time.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, I could easily write 1000's of words as to why, but to me its a perfect movie, all the performances are great, the action setpieces are timeless, the score is so iconic its hard to imagine anyone who doesnt know the Raiders March when they hear it, I've seen it literally hundreds of times and could happily sit here right now and watch it again, utter brilliance

My favourite is Terminator 2. It has everything I love in movies : sci-fi. kick ass characters. awesome action scenes. bit of horror, suspense, chiller, time-travel, cool soundtrack; really slick presentation and effects. futuristic apocalypse. The characters all go through a learning change (Arnie learns what it is to be human, Sarah Connor respects a non-living entity, John Connor cares about others). It's just badass on every level. I loved it as a kid and I still mark out to everything in it. Although I think the extended cut on DVD has a lot of fat on it.

2nd favourite is Dark Knight. It ticks all the boxes that T2 has. (Although I have some ~minor~ grievances with Bale's performance). I absolutely adore this movie. I love how everything about the movie is so polished and perfect - except for the Joker, who's performance is perfectly erratic and spontaneous, a fitting antithesis to the movie. I love the action, the subtle message about humans, and exposition. It's just so awesome...I love it.

pulp fiction , one of the few films i never get tired of watching , coolest film ever made

die hard , best action movie ever made and the yardstick for all others

remains of the day , IMO , anthony hopkins performance is the greatest ever put to film in terms of subtlety , sensitivity and the abiltiy to say so much while saying so little , the scene in which emma thompson tries to take the book of him is incredibly emotional considering the charecther is so emotionally repressed

Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin) is my favourite film of all time. It deals with love, death, the line of history, the nature of existence, suicide, the internal thoughts of the everyday human, music, colour, black and white, the Berlin Wall, the circus, loneliness, lost love, obsession, sacrifice, Rock N Roll, Peter Falk as Columbo, film making, languages and symbols, the natural world, urban existance and a fall from grace (literally).

    "Compañero??"

The first that came to my mind is Oldboy and Apocalypse Now. But if i think to long il come up with 10 more.

Platoon - I would have to say that platoon is my absolute favourite film of all time. I love everything about the film.
I love the characters in the film and the way that they are developed. I love the behaviour of the platoon as a whole and the politics and tension within the platoon. i think that every character is believable and none of them are stock characters. The power struggle between Barnes and Elias and the influence it has on Taylor is brilliant. I love the way that the platoon divides in two between siding with Barnes and siding with Elias. I honestly believe that Sgt Barnes is one of the greatest movie characters of all time. You get emotionally involved in so many characters in the film. you are delighted when king gets to go home and you cant wait to see bunny get his comuppance.

The cast is brilliant. Tom Berenger and Willem defoe give the performances of there lives and even charlie sheen is good. John C. mcginley, Kevin Dillon and Keith David also give great performances. Even though forest whitaker and johnny depp dont have many lines it is still awesome that they're in it.

I think that Oliver Stone's direction is brilliant. I love the way that he starts the film with the new recruits passing by the bodybags and i think the films pacing is great. the action scenes are entertaining but not over the top so the audience is not worn out by the time of the explosive final battle scene. I also think elias's death scene is fantastic.

Another thing I liked was the films length. it doesn't outstay its welcome. IMO apocalypse now and saving private ryan, while good films, are far too long, they seem to be saying 'oooo look at how epic we are'.

I think that platoon is one of the most realistic war films. Stone having fought in 'nam definetely helps. it is probably the only vietnam film ive seen that correctly represents the racial make up of an average vietnam platoon. a lot of other war films seem to have a token black guy where as here nearly half the platoon is black. The Film also explores how the average us soldier was from a poor backround and from a small town and with little or no higher education. Thing such as Fragging, drug Use and mistreatment of natives are also depicted.

i think that the film has an awesome soundtrack. Adagio for strings is brilliant and there are great songs from jefferson airplane and smokey robinson.

Lastly the film has some great quotes:
Are you smoking this **** so's to escape from reality? Me, I don't need this ****. I am reality.

And if there's a heaven and God I hope there is, I know he's sitting up there, drunk as a ****ing monkey and smoking ****. Because he left his pains down here.

Free your mind, your ass will follow.

What are you saving up to be......Jewish!

Ho Chi Minh sucks the dick!

Oh, I see, what we got here is a crusader ( I've lost count of how many times i've used this quote in everyday life)

Ever'body know, the poor are always being ****ed over by the rich. Always have, always will.

Well, here I am, anonymous all right. With guys nobody really cares about. They come from the end of the line, most of 'em. Small towns you never heard of: Pulaski, Tennessee; Brandon, Mississippi; Pork Van, Utah; Wampum, Pennsylvania. Two years' high school's about it, maybe if they're lucky a job waiting for them back at a factory, but most of 'em got nothing. They're poor, they're the unwanted, yet they're fighting for our society and our freedom. It's weird, isn't it? They're the bottom of the barrel and they know it. Maybe that's why they call themselves grunts, cause a grunt can take it, can take anything. They're the best I've ever seen, Grandma. The heart & soul.

    Wow long post!

    Glengarry Glen Ross was superb.

Have to second Planes, Trains and Automobiles for best comedy film, though Blazing Saddles is close, just not as well rounded as you describe.

Raging Bull, Godfather Part II, The Usual Suspects all excellent.

Still, I can't see Goodfellas being surpassed. Cinematic perfection.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.
