I used hook grip, one hand under one over is that right? Any tips on form?

You must be starting into weights or training to be sore after that kinda weight. Just take your time and ease into training and new exercises.

Also remeber to alternate your grip, as in, first set left palm away from you right palm toward you, second lift left palm toward you right palm away from you, prevents any unbalances in arm strength etc

Hey thanks, yes this week was my first week in a gym with a good weight section. I done weights on Monday squating, bench pressing etc but was ok next day. But when I done weights on Wednesday all today I can barely move, its a killer getting up off the couch, im putting it down to my body not been used to deadlifting. I must remember to alternate my grip I didn't do that last time thanks.

How many reps are you doing as well....?? Probs best off sticking below 8 (which doesn't mean you have to use a weight where you can only get 8, but you should be working towards that as you become more comfortable with the lift)

It's gonna be next to impossible to judge your own form, your tecnique has to be right with this exercise. I'd say ask an instructor to have a look at you doing it. Videos are great n'all, but you may need one to one for these.

I wouldn't bother with a mixed grip yet if I was you. I only use that when I find my grip failing, up until then I use normal (both palms facing you) grip.

you might be sore - but its a good sore - its the type of pain that lets you know you have achieved something :D

I only use a mixed grip on my heavy work sets. Anyone think that would lead to any unbalance? I suspect not.

There's a difference between sore and strained. If you're sore, you were on the right track. If you're feeling strained, take a break until you recover then get an instructor to show you again ;)

I've been using the same grip for the last 4.5-5 years and I seem to be ok!!

Same as myself. Don't think I've ever changed my deadlift grip.

Its not like you're lifting a different weight in each hand. Changing grip every set would probably get on my nerves.

Like the OP I have just started to do Dead lifts and Squats.

My problem is my gym does not have a free straight bar only a free ez bar.

There is a smith machine which is fine for squats and bench etc, and I have been trying the DL's with the ez bar.

My question is, is it ok to do the DL's with the ez bar or should I try them on the smith machine or maybe with Dumbells? Like the OP I am only using light weights to start out with, trying to get the technique right but not sure if I can with the ez bar!

Sounds like ya need a new gym bro.

The mixed grip of left palm out and right palm in is the common grip for deadlift. I just like to alternate this every lift. It definitely feels different when I alternate the grip and becasue of that I think its a good thing. I feel like I'm workin different areas of my arms each lift which I wouldnt be if I didnt alternate. But if Hanley says its not important then it aint, just habit at this stage for me.

Thanks! I knew I would get that answer from someone;) Unfortunately thats not really an option at the moment and apart from not having that one piece of euipment the gym suits my needs fine.

So apart from moving gyms, what other options do I have?

Ask them to buy a straight bar - they probably will.

You could try dumbells etc, but you would max them out pretty quick. You really need a straightbar to deadlift

    What ragg said.
Also the dumbells would not be the same.

No offence but you seem to be looking for some way to do something without the most basic equipment to do it. Its like asking if you can practice tying laces with loafers.

    Ok, Thanks!

Will ask them to buy one and see what happens.

In the mean time will give it a go with the dumbells.

    Cheers!
