I know it's not a single but I'd much prefer to get this:

    http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/08/25/bob-dylans-holiday-lp-christmas-in-the-heart-due-october-13th/

All this stuff about the RATM single being a two finger salute to the X Factor single is nonsense to me. Don't get me wrong, I think that X Factor tripe should be buried down to the core of the earth, but I'd like to see a Christmas no. 1 for what it's supposed to be, a nice warm Christmas song. We've had one decent Chrismas song this decade and that was Don't Let The Bells End by The Darkness, brilliant song. It was pipped to no. 1 by that annoyingly depressing "Mad World" song by that Jules dude.

    End of rant.

Mars ... The Darkness were a comedy band ....

Imagine the joy of having 'Feck you I won't do what you tell me' coming out of the telly on Christmas day ? Glorious ...

Yeah, And? Their song was a Christmas song and a good one at that. Might not be a Slade or Wizzard, but it had the appropriate spirit.

I will be satisfied if RATM goes to no. 1 and not the x factor, but I won't be buying it and I won't be listening to it Christmas day...

(I'll be listening to my attempts at drumming on Guitar Hero all day! Can't wait!:D)

I'd love for this to happen....just for comedy factor and the awkwardness on the part of TV presenters.

I think it's all rat race mumbo jumbo...

Why getting "killing in the name of"? So its a great tune, i've rocked out to it many a time, but just for shock factor for Christmas number 1... screw that...

There's many indy releases that come out time and time again... why not bulk up on them...

Hell instead of making it arkward... make it bleeeding interesting...

Christmas number 1 should not be limited as a climax for the year 2009, make it an intro for 2010...

Screw X Factor and the rat race for "Killing in the name of", pump up those that actually put the shít together themselves and would be much better off knowing that what they do with each drop of sweat isn't pointless...

Could open up next year for the next Kaiser Cheif's / Madonna.. what ever... but at least not the next "My hopes and dreams ly in getting through to the next round tripe"

sorry Paul.. not very sober right now...

    basically...

why bump up an old track...

when you can help bump up new bands that put more time into it... then these people looking to get sling shot into the music bizz...

Because the Bandwagon has started that's why - with over half a million in the facebook group, if even half of them (and probably much less) bought it yer one wouldn't be dreaming her dream !

they can all have nightmare's for all i care!

But that's what i also mean by Rat Race... getting caught in the cycle that.. screw media expectations we'll all buy "Killing in the name"...

but everyone that does that... is missing the reason for boycotting the x factor single...

there is no proper push for creativity...

If you really wanna suck it to the x factor machine, people should put a group together for indy music.

The media dept for the Simon Cowell machine can spin this as being a direct attack on the singers skill of whoever wins x factor.

but yeah, as you said... the group has run itself through to a huge amount of people... and most of'em are fed up about how the music bizz has gone, more so then they'd actually go out and do it...

But in my opinion, the method of showing the frustration aint right. I'd love to see the top 10 being completely run by unknowns who shot out.

There's loads of them worthy of it, but because they dont click into a particular market, they aren't going to be put out by a label.

I for 1 am not going to join in this facade for that very reason.

X Factor single - to be released by Sony BMG

Rage Against the Machine - to be released by Epic Records (a subsidary of Sony)

Either way, it is not 'sticking it to the man', Sony are getting rich whichever one gets to number one.

Lads , yez are awful dry shytes ..... is it the budget ?

If anyone thought for one second that anyone was getting at 'the man' in anyway then you're away with the fairies.

    It's just having a laugh ....

Some of you really should try it occasionally

Sorry dude, didn't mean to come off all Scrooge. I think it would be funnier to get Paul Holt's "Fifty Grand for Christmas", for the reasons that it is being released on an independant label, and Simon bet him 50 grand when he auditioned for the X Factor that he would not get a Christmas number one.

Apparently there is also growing support for this to the christmas number no 1 too...:D

Either way it would be a bit of crack... Unlike having another x-factor number one.

if we can get just one kid this christmas to listen to Rage Against the Machine instead of X-factor winner number whatever it is, we will have made the world a better place.

I'm gonna come straight out and say it - the people who came up with this idea are made from the same stuff as Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Geldof and Bono. Actually not Bono. He's a pr1ck.

There was a similar drive last year to get "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" by Tom Waits to number 1.

Brilliant! I pissed my myself laughing reading that. Fair play to RATM!!

Question - is this chart battle a UK thing only or UK & Ireland combined? That is, if I buy "Killing In The Name Of" through iTunes, will I be contributing towards RATM's bid for #1 this xmas?

this is all a bit sad if you ask me. Might be making a point if it was an unknown band, but RATM who just happen to be writing a new album? The cynic in me says 'massive public manipulation'.

That's what it's all about for probably 99% of the music industry... the other 1% who knows.
