    Anyone know:
    - what version of Route 66 comes with it 7, 8?
    - Are the maps Navteq or Teleatlas?
    - is it easily upgradeable?

I bought one of these for the gf last year..(the search & map is ****)
I also have a tomtom one for myself
I put the tomtom software & maps on the route 66 and it runs better on it than on my tomtom unit itsself(and its way faster at turning on)

I then took the route66 with the tomtom software off the gf and I use it myself now

Yeah not too difficult (It is WinCE OS), IGO8 is better than TomTom though IMO. A while back there was a really long thread (246 posts) on the Mini/Maxi version of this, with some good info on getting IGO8 on. I think it would be possible to get Garmin XT on without any difficulty too. Have the mini version of this and works great. As previosly stated Route 66 is #####.

By the way the mini came with a cradle, would be surprising if this was not included..

I have the Mini version of this which was on Bargain Alerts last year. My unit was 40euro IIRC in a Halfords sale.

I have never used a Garmin or Tom Tom so have nothing to compare with but have no issue with this unit. I have used it to get from Stansted Airport and drive around Greater London and it was spot on.

I also used it throughout Wales, incl. Cardiff city centre and a trip to Liverpool also. It uses full UK postcode searches. So far am very happy with the unit given what it cost.

A cradle is not a car mount.
The unit will definitly come with a car mount, it has to, otherwise it's not fit for it's intended purpose.
A cradle is like a docking station, which you can sit your unit onto, while it's not in your car. Most often used as a way of connecting your unit to your PC. However, you can still do this using a mini usb cable. Nothing to worry about.

I bought a Route66 Maxi last year, put iGO8 onto it, haven't used it since! :D
But I'm a bit of a gadget freak, and I've four other GPS units, nothing wrong with the sat nav!

Tip: you'll need to email a copy of your receipt to Route66 to get a free map update download. I think you have 30 days to do this????

    Ah, I see. My mistake.

I'm buying this for my technically inept dad. With that in mind, what software would you recommend I put on it for him ?

There is a version of IGO called Amigo that is very simple to use, but because there are very few skins available it lacks the functionality of IGO8.

I must admit that I find Garmin XT easy to use but they use Navteq maps which currently are not as up to date as the Teleatlas IGO8 maps. I think I have this the right way round - but I dont have access to my IGO8 maps right now.

If you are up for it try them all and see which is the best. It is a bit of a steep learning curve though to get them all working. You will have to look into skinning the WinCE on the Route 66 to get into a userfriendly screen if you reset the unit.

I ordered it when it was out of stock , but my order just got cancelled because they said they are unable to get any more stock.

I see amazon now have a Garmin 205 (newly overhauled ,whatever that means) working out about €70 , think I am going to go for this as an alternative or maybe I should just wait for the January sales

Mine arrived today, not opening it because it's a pressie but it states that it's a refurbished product on the side. Didn't know that when ordering, sure it's fine though.

was it the Route 66 or the Garmin I linked to ,that you ordered ? , do you think the Garmin is good value ?

This is what my online order says
    Items Ordered Price
1 of: Route 66 Maxi 4.3" GPS with UK and Eire Maps [Electronics]
    Condition: New
    Sold by: Amazon EU S.a.r.L.
    £47.53

Had better be new , I'm a little upset with Amazon and un-obvious third party postal charges right now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭Bazzy

Mine says new as well and it better be or there will be trouble.

Route 66 seem to be only concentrating on phone software which is why i assumed they were selling them off cheap
