    • controller pairing fixes
    • PSP minis playable on PS3
    • data transfer between 2 PS3s linked with ethernet cable

Last one is especially good as it will finally give you the ability to transfer locked game saves to another console.

That controller pairing thing was beginning to get on my nerves.

    Will it fix trophy syncing?

where did the info come from? sounds good but you know the internet and people like making things up

The source of every gaming news on the web, NeoGAF.
Already confirmed by people in the know.

EDIT: Its now on the PS3 EU Blog:
    http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/12/08/ps3-system-software-update-3-15/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,372 ✭✭✭ongarite

The next system software update for PS3 will be available very soon. Update 3.15 is an optional update and has two key features which are explained below –

    PS3 minis:

We launched minis on PSN back in October in conjunction with the PSPgo, but in the next couple of weeks you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP.

Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget” (8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy” (8/10 – Videogamer).

There is something for everyone with minis, whether you want to play them on the go with your PSP or in the comfort of your home on PS3.

If you have already brought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well, just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well. Simple!

    PS3 Data Transfer:

This feature enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

    The process is really simple

    1. Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on and connect them with a LAN cable; PS3 (A) should be connected to the TV
    2. On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings menu and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
    3. Follow the instructions on-screen and transfer data
    4. After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen, and then connect PS3 (B) to the TV to view the XMB
    5. If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system

    Official info for the lazy.

    Nice idea about minis!

Will pick up Fieldrunners for sure. I wonder if they'll be rendered at higher resolution on PS3.

No info about Trophy syncing then?

Now that is doing my head in.

I dont think they ever officially acknowledged the issue, it might be one of the hidden fixes...hopefully.

I think the trophy syncing issue is a server side issue though, either MW2 or all the new Slim PS3 owners are giving the PSN servers a battering. This is a completely uneducated guess, just makes sense to me considering you can get the trophies to sync if you keep trying.

I already own quite a few minis so this is awesome news, glad the rumours were true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

Good fixes but I'd love if they'd fix the way albums and movies are displayed as they have already done with photographs. A grid system is so much better than the liner display being used. Also if you could list 'folders' with an artists albums displayed inside this. Currently when you browse to view music by an artist it displays all songs and not a breakdown of albums....................... really really stupid. It makes listening to music on the PS3 akward and wearisome.

Yeah, that trophy syncing issue is quite annoying - not impressed at all. I can only hope what CombatCow said is true.

    Delighted about the minis news.

The last point should be all done with the "backup utility" if you ask me.
How many times are you going to need to have two ps3's connected with a lan cable. Should have had a different work around. Fact !
Why dont they fix the Blu Ray of Death and then you wouldnt need to use it at all !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

Theres nothing stopping you backing it up to an external drive anyway. At least you dont need some stupid propiratory cable to do it (im looking at you 360)

Lads, here's what I did to fix the trophy syncing issue:
    1. Make sure PS3 is powered off and the controller is connected via USB cable.
    2. Hold your finger down on the power button (keep it there!). The PS3 will power up, beep a few times and then power down.
    3. Now, hold your finger down on the power button again until you hear two beeps in quick succession.
    4. You'll be asked to press the PS button to activate the controller, then you're brought to a menu.
    5. Just chose 'Restart System', and let the PS3 restart normally.
    6. You've now re-initialized the PS3 (don't worry nothing was deleted), you may have to re-enter your display options.
    7. Go sync your trophies.

Still no Mkv support? I suppose it'll never happen. Sony being one of the bigger IP/copyright owners are hardly likely to make it easier for people to play pirated HD movies, are they?

I'd like to see more flexibility in file management, like editing folders and renaming files and folders etc. I didn't think far enough ahead when I set about filling my 320GB drive so now I'm faced with removing everything in 80gb chunks (the size of my portable drive), re-organising it on the PC, and transferring it back again. i.e. I'd like to prefix all my son's movies with "kids" so they're all together in the same folder, rather than having to worry about what movie is next alphabetically, that's going to start when his film is over.

    Did that make sense?

I think it already supports what you're asking about the folders. You need to edit the 'Album' information on the movie and then group your movies by album. If you hit triangle on a movie I think you'll get an option for 'Information'. Here you can edit the name of the movie and it's album name. Then you should be able to group by album.

What I would like to see is for Sony to extend this and allow sub folders too. Right now when you group by album you can't sub group within that album.

Edit: afaik the above only applies to content on the physical disk within the PS3 and not external drives connected via usb.

so this is basically the Bluetooth fix. maybe they could have bunged in other drive format compatibility and subfolders eh!

Its an optional update, PSN won't force you to install it before going online.

Looks like the trophy sync is fixed, I tryd it there earlier and other forum posts suggest it's working properly now.

Try it after 7 tonight, thats when most are online.

The controller was where the controller would turn on the system but lose connection to the PS3 almost imeddiately You'd to reboot or hook up the cable for it to see it.

No problem with my controller in 3.10 either - 3.15 better not do something bad now.

    Yup, had that constantly. Irritating.

Trophy Syncing seemed to work fine for me since last night. Not done the update yet.

This has actually STOPPED my controller from syncing, it was fine before the update. I have an original 60gb PS3 and now my dualshock won't work unless it's connected with the usb cable, my old sixaxis controller still works though

I see that they still have not doe anything about locked game save content, that blows as whenever I want to play some of my games on my ps3 upstairs I cant. If you read the part about backing up for use with another system, you should notice the key line is "can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3."

What a piss poor update, only really usefull if the lense on one of your machines die, so you can use content on another ps3.

This update has f*cked my ps3. I'm certain of it. A couple of days after I installed it my ps3 plays games for about 5 - 10 mins then just hangs at loading screens. Now its starting to hang at startup too or may not even read the disc. Dvd's and everything else works perfectly so I guess my the blu-ray player is cabbaged. Didnt this update have some feature about speeding up the player?

Now sony want 160 odd quid to repair it

Can confirm this is happening to me also. First, it completely reset my video/audio out. I got a blank screen at startup on my HDMI connection, after a few minutes it picked up the HDMI connection and I was able to enable it again.

Games are crashing more now. Have an issue with the screen just staying blank when I try to start them sometimes now. Has never happened before this FW update.

On the plus side I can now resync my trophies and profile with the servers

I'm having the same issue as you both. It was fine for about 2 days after the latest update and then it started freezing. Now I can't play a game (from disc) without it freezing. So so annoying. Going to phone Sony later today.

So my PS3 (60GB model btw) died last night. Since I updated to 3.15 I think that my PS3 may have been freezing more than it ever had but I'm not really sure if the firmware is to blame. It froze twice on me whilst I was playing Demon's Souls so I went into the recovery menu and repaired the file system. This seemed to fix the freezing in games but the browser still crashed on me a few times. The better choice in the recovery menu would have been to rebuild the database but I hadn't performed a backup so I didn't want to delete everything.

Last night I was playing LittleBigPlanet (Pirates of the Caribbean pack :D) and a few minutes after I exited the game the fans went from a normal level (say as loud as a typical PC fan) to silent, instantly. Like an idiot I thought nothing of it and figured that it has just cooled down enough for the fans to reduce their speed. It is possible that the fans failed, though I'm not sure if that's actually what happened. Anyways, long story short about half an hour later the PS3 just shut itself off. I tried to turn it on again and was greeted with green-yellow-flashing red lights.

Did my PS3 die because of FW 3.15? It's possible. My PS3 may have been on it's last legs anyway as myself and the OH use it for about 6-12 hours every day. I guess I could blame Sony and see if they'd repair it for free or give me a reduced rate or something but I'd rather not have to wait a long time for the PS3 to be returned to me, so I think I'll go the third party route. I'd also run the risk of my precious Demon's Souls disc getting lost as it is now stuck within the belly of the big black beast. So yeah, I'm off to create another 'My PS3 is dead' sob story thread. :(

Well your initial description is the exact same as mine, except that I was playing FIFA 10. It's also the same as the majority of issues I've seen relating to 'freezing PS3s'. Mine is also the 60GB version, same as most (but not all) people complaining about this

Not sure if you're looking for advice or anything but let me just say that you should back up your PS3 if you haven't done so already, and maybe try rebuilding the database from the recovery menu. If this is caused by FW 3.15, I wonder will Sony issue a newer firmware to address these issues. Unless it's like with some of the other firmware problems where a minority of systems had issues. Sure hate being in that minority. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,728 ✭✭✭✭noodler

The way I look at it is there are 25m PS3s out there. So realistically there are a fair few failing everyday, all over the world (even assuming a tiny failure rate) and at the same time there are going to be a fair few that fail after a FW update by pure conincidence.

I guess that theory is no consolation but surely if a software update broke it then it shouldn't really be fooked and should be very fixable?

It is kind of heartening to know that you at least got your use out of it. Lemmie know when you have a new one and we will game swap again.

I assume you have tried the HDD tricks GP?

EDIT: I still haven't downloaded this FW.

I only downloaded it because my controllers wouldn't sync on one occasion.

Are the HDD tricks switching the HDD in and out? I took out my hard drive and put in my old one, and tried that. Just before it broke I think I heard my fan go though so I think it might be something more serious. When I get my PS3 repaired I'll be sure to deactivate your account from it before I activate it on my Slim.

Here ya go man, this link explains the process well. I'm not sure if you know this already, but at some point the PS3 firmware stopped being stored solely on the PS3 internal flash memory but is now instead stored with some OS components on the hard disk drive as well. This can lead to corruption of OS and other system files. When you get into the recovery menu, you should try restoring the file system, or if you have your data backed up I'd try rebuilding the database. This could fix any issues that may be being caused by corruption of system files. Hope this does the trick for you anyway, wouldn't wish what happened to me on you!

I am now the owner of a PS3 Slim, with absolutely none of the issues my 60GB PS3 was having (perhaps due to FW 3.15, who knows). It's weird to go from a system that was having issues to a system that (hopefully) does not have any. Like I'm noticing that the browser is much faster, and I can call up the XMB much faster.

I guess since you can buy the lazy mans add on and unlock all the cars they don't want people sharing game saves...but still, its really annoying.
