Nothing annoys me more in the whole world.

I think it's unbecoming of someone to use it to be honest.

    It's dirty and stupid.

I love facebook but I'm sick to death of people using textspeak, use proper English for fcuk sake!

    e.g
    is completely fukd 4 economics 2m! any1 up 4 givin me a crash lesson 2m b4 4...???? ANY1......???????

    Reply:
go over d tutorial questions we got an ull be d grandest .. dont forget u av done so ur half way dare like!! :D:D

Mother of God, this kind of stuff really annoys me.

In Gaelic Ireland, poetry was power. I totally agree. If you're going to go to school for 13-15 years to learn how to write, then ****ing do it properly!

Time is no excuse in my opinion.

    What do you think?

Credit goes to the boards.ie mods who strictly enforce the "no txtspk" rule. One reason why I love this site.

I F**king hate it, never used it, never will.
If i get a text with this shyte in it, i just delete it straight away, dont even try to read it.
Anyone over the age of 14 who uses this should be punched very violently.

Moan all ye want, but we'll they'll be teaching textspeak in schools in 50 years time. We'll have to go to small villages on the West coast to remember the language we used to speak.

Couldn't give a toss about it tbh (to be honest).

I'd rather txtspk then having to decypher an inner city Dublin accent any day of the week.. (Cork & Kerry accents too).

It's only used by stupid people and children. And stupid children.

I've seen people with keyboards type like that, and IMO, it takes more effort to spell things wrongly on purpose, and more time, than it does to type out a full sentence.

bugs the fcuk out of me.

    Textspeak no.

    Internet speak yes.

I detest it with every fibre of my body!

And what's worse is the way you're viewed as being a prick if you object to it!

But that won't stop me; if anyone sends me anything with more than one occurrence of this vile bastardisation of language, or posts it on my social network page, I'll reply with an "Any chance of that in English, please ?"

Using this crap means that either (a) you're 14, (b) you're so thick you've forgotten how to talk/write (c) you're too lazy to talk to me properly, or (d) you don't respect me enough to talk to me properly.

I use the odd "u" if space is running out, but really full-on textspeak - it just seems to require too much effort and thought, which defeats the purpose surely.

Well that's not too annoying as such, but its the people that spell "you", "yu", instead of even going for "u", which annoy me, just shows pure idiocy, not even time-saving.

I think it evolved from shortening words to save text costs, although you're right: it must be murder to write, especially when you can just use predictive text.

Ne1 Hu TyPz LiK dIs LoL derserves to be shot. It requires more effort that typing in English FFS! And as for people who end every sentence with lol....

I don't use it but a lot of my friends do. (I'm 18)

I think the 'haha lol' people are more annoying TBH, like I'm a funny person but when I text you you don't have to laugh at everything I say

    Y?

It seems a perfectly intelligent adjustment to the medium. Someone using abbreviations in a text message is saving space, time and possibly money. Why is that any more reprehensible or stupid than Roman stonemasons using short forms of names on monuments, or mediaeval monks writing both left to right and up and down on the same page?

I never understand why people get so exercised about stuff like this.

    Y?

....is a letter, not a question!!!!
I never understand why people get so exercised about stuff like this.

Aside from it being extremely irritating to try and decipher, it also results in people using words like "exercised" when they probably mean "excited" :D

I always just reply 'What?' until they get the idea to stop using text speak.

Couple of people I know have stopped using it because they think I cant understand it.

I hate it when people add in "like" into their sentances, where they write the same way as they talk.

Eg: I missed the bus yesterday so like, I can't go home untill tomorrow.

    Or some such rubbish.
    Argh!

From the OED (their abbreviation, not a piece of wicked txtspeak):

    EXERCISE

    b. esp. To harass, vex, worry; to afflict, make anxious, ‘prove’.

1888 N. & Q. Ser. VII. V. 418 My own housemaid was very much exercised... by an inexplicable tinkling... of her door-bell.

More inexplicable tinklings as they arrive.

I dont use it and neither do any of the people who text me so it doesn't bother me. Internet talk on the other hand is a pain in my arse. It's so stupid and just reminds me of dimwitted Americans with no vocabulary. Its no fun reading a sentence with the FTW at the end of it, only to have to check what those letters stand for and find out it means something that isn't even appropriate. Imagine saying it in real life.

John - "Lads who is the best footballer in the world?"
Liam - "I'd go for Messi"
Dave - "Tough one, Ronaldo i'd say"
Gimp - "Rooney for the win"

Shut up LOL, IMO, LMAO, blah blah blah

    "It's a death row pardon, 2 mins 2 l8"....

Joking aside, I tend not to use it myself. The only difficulty that gives me is when someone sends a genuinely funny text. "I laughed out loud" seems a bit pedantic, but if I resort to "LOL" they'll think my phone has been stolen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 150 ✭✭time42play

Once had someone claim it was her "culture" and it was discrimination to ask her to write properly. But on an email list with lots of older women who don't even know what a "text" is she was pretty much told to adapt or leave.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,559 ✭✭✭✭AnonoBoy

No matter how tolerant I try to be if I get a text message filled with words inexplicably stripped of their vowels I always end up thinking that the person who sent it is a moron.

    Generally they are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

It's destroying the English language. I know people who, when they write essays actually put 'da' instead of 'the' and wonder why they get such crappy marks

EDIT: Also, the inclusion of text speak in some music these days really gets to me. 'Dance Wiv Me' 'In Da Club'
    ****e music anyways

The thing about text-speak is it's used so one can fit more words into one single text message. But yet, all the letters still remain on the buttons. I personally would prefer to text words properly and pay the extra few cent so my message doesn't look like something from Britney Spears' vocabulary book! Thank you!

Couldnt agree more. Isn't that why phobes have predictive text? Does this happen in other languages? As in do the french/spanish have text speak?

Every phone has predictive text. If you install a new language on your phone you can use it with predictive text. I have german and it works perfectly!

And also yeah, text speak in other languages is awful too because I have spanish and french friends and whenever they talk to me on facebook or whatever I can't understand what the fcuk they're trying to say.. For example :P
