You'd be surprised how cheap hotel rooms in Vegas are. The hotels make their money on the gambling not on the hotel suites. You probably wouldn't pay more than 25 dollars a night and it could even be less.

Flights are the only trouble yea... But some airlines such as continental do have cheap'ish flights to america and stitch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭Xinkai

Continental arent cheap by any stretch. Over the 2 legs it would be best to fly with Aer Lingus to San Francisco, and then transfer onto Vegas.

Ah well i got a discount when I went over cause of the group we had! :pac:

at the most the flights are the annoying part if anyone were to go!

People in the thread are saying the only thing holding them back is the expenses, so why not start getting onto people and find some sponsorships!

weekend its like $100 or so a night in most hotels, weekdays its cheaper. you could get a motel room for a week between 4 ppl or something and that would only be about $90 or so per person. i reccomend budget suites of america :) only a 10 minute walk from caesars, well.. 15 and every fast food restaraunt imaginable within 5 mins of it :pac: In-N-Out burger nom nom

Games for EVO 2010 have been announced

    • Super Street Fighter 4
    • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
    • Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix
    • Femme Fatal — Female participants only SSF4 tournament
    • Tekken 6
    • BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
    • The most popular game from a forum poll

The absent games from this list that were featured last year are Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core and Soul Calibur 4.

I assume that the poll will come down to 3s and Mahval. Be interesting to see which wins. My head says 3s but my heart says IT'S MAHVAAL BABEE!

pretty much sums up my thoughts (from SA):
    illezt wrote:
SSF4 - gotta be there, no explanation required
SSF4 "Femme Fatale" ladies tourney - are you ****ing ****ting me? this is gonna be a bunch of socal dudes' girlfriends and starslay3r. this is seriously a main event? this isn't even gonna break 30 entrants
Blazblue CT - a game that nobody plays anymore. everyone has either moved onto CS or renounced CT because it's a ****ty broken game and has no hype at all
Tekken 6 - huge game, again no explanation required
Tatsunoko VS Capcom UAS - I haven't played UAS, but the JP version of this game is **** and has absolutely no scene whatsoever. The "scene" was a bunch of scrubs and wong/marn winning every tourney even though they literally never play the game.
SF HD Remix - I like vanilla ST better but HD Remix is the choice for obvious reasons
"Player's Choice", which will be decided by vote on SRK. - 95% of the people who vote on this aren't even gonna go to Evo (and most marvel players don't really post on srk), so this is gonna end up as like MBAA or some **** (even though that scene is far better/more hype than BBCT, girls only tourney, or TvC)

I personally got no problem with a ladies torunament.

It's waaaaay too easy to get mysoganistic over a primarily male pursuit (re: comic con and "scream if twilight ruined comic con" which lead to 30 year old men intimidating teenage girls. Classy).

Even if it's gimmicky, I'd rather they try.

As a side event I'd have no problems with it, but they're sacrificing another main event game spot for it, which is what I find retarded.

edit: Also it's discriminatory! It's like ladies' poker events, what's stopping them from entering the regular tournaments?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,082 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

To have a girls only tournament ahead of another established game is just ridiculous.

Even if we are all reading it wrong and it's a SSFIV tournament with only girl characters allowed, it still doesn't deserve a place ahead of any other game.

If TvC is the Wii game then they'd probably be better off holding a Smash tournament as it'd probably get more entrants.

Got no problem with those arguments. I DO have a problem with the "Pff, they'll just be some random crap hanger on wimmins with no mad skillz" comments in the post above.

I hope the "scene" doesn't reflect that opinion because it'll make us all look bad.

Numbers-wise it is true too though, marvel or 3s would have a lot more entrants and a much higher quality of play (not being sexist, there are some good female SF4 players - choco comes to mind; however, I don't know of any in America).

again, I'm not saying it shouldn't be further down the pecking list. I'm just saying I am concerned about a vitriolic and mysoganistic backlash similar to those seen in other-basically-nerd based communities when something similar has happened.

Yeah the whole "socal dudes gf" arguement is BS.

But it's a skill game and there is no need to have a female only tournament aside from being able to say stupid stuff like Femme Fatale SF.

Having said this the Ladies of SF tourney they ran in SOCAL had some of the largest attendences of any of the Arcade Infinity tournaments and more people stayed watching the games.

AFAIK there won't be Smash at EVO again. When they ran it (2008?) the various Smash communties were against because they let everything go in EVO and didn't go for any of the restrictions that Smash players like to put on their game.

I would have an issue with it as the whole idea of ladies-only street fighter is fairly mysoganistic. There is no advantage for a male in this game so there is no reason for women not just go ahead and enter the main SSF4 event.

Whats the worst that can happen, they get knocked out early and have plenty of time to cook the dinner :D

Hey remember the vid I posted of a girl beating Mago, she was no slouch. I think its a bit insulting to label them as wags or whatever the guy was implying. Right so there might not be the interest at the moment from the ladies but would there be a better way to generate it??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭Xinkai

Hey hey chill on the Femme Fatal speak, i know girls from the states that could come here & mop up house, besides, girls want a chance to prove they can play the game on a pro level let them is what i say. Girl Gamers aren't really the dime the dozen they used to be.

As for players choice all the pro's want windjammers & afaik Wjam WILL be at evo, if not a main attraction, MrWizard has said the final WILL be put on the big screen ^_^

It's not playing on a pro level if you separate them from men for no reason. If they want to play on a pro level why not just enter the main tournament?

There's two ways I think you can look at it.

    Either

    1) The organisers genuinely want teh wimmins to play fighting games and believe they are not playing yet because they feel too poor/ intimidated to enter the main competitions.

    2) The organisers want a, potentially large piece of publicity from boards like this discussing it.

Femme Fatale - Not too keen on this, for the same reasons as Dreddy. This spot really should have gone to a team tourney if they really wanted a second SSF4 event.

Blazblue CT - I didn't think this was going to make it; I actually thought Melty Blood AA would get this spot (it drew more entrants than BB at last month's NEC).

    Player's choice - I'll be amazed if this isn't MVC2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,587 ✭✭✭Xinkai

You know why it's called melty blood AA?

It's not misogynistic to say that a women's only tourney as a main event is stupid.
Besides the real female players (and they do exist) want to own your arse, not your girlfriend/friend/sister's.

3rd strike and marvel have been sacrificed due to Evo's picks.
Marvel will probably win the vote though.

Uh... you HAVE seen a pick of Starscream or whatever her face is right... NOT NICE... Cami is just freakin annoying, but tapable, SherryJynx has ****ed up teeth, Stacy the bison player is only rated as NSFW from the pros but i've never seen her myself.

There was a couple of nice ones at that ladies tournament awhile back but i think anyone who was good was rough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Sairus

I'm sort of torn on the idea of an all wimmens tourney.
First off, I'm against it because Evo is basically the biggest fighting tourney around - sacrificing quality matches for an event for people who probably wouldn't get anywhere in an unrestricted tourney is just annoying.
(Not trying to rat on female player skills, but if they were as good/better than the male entrants they wouldn't need their own tourney)

However on the flipside, as as Doom said, it might be that EVO is trying to coax out the ladies who are not playing yet because they feel too poor/ intimidated to enter the main competitions, and I'm all up for that.

Also, not a hope that I'm going to Evo this year! T'would be awesome to see a party of strapping young Irish lads over there though~ Go on ya good things ya.

Personally I wouldnt mind watching these playing in a tournament.

I cannot even get my head around this argument though, if the girls were any good they could play against the fella's?? And if it is just for hype f*ck it, whatever brings attention right?

    Agreed on both counts.

I think people are still missing what I am saying above- in predominantly male passtimes like our own, when something like this happens there is a danger of a unified, negative, and mysoganistic reaction occuring which looks really bad for the community involved.

http://blogs.laweekly.com/style_council/comic-con-2009/twilight-protests/ was the example I gave. It boiled down to a bunch of 30 something men screaming whenever teenage girls passed by.

Arguments of "it's sexist to have a seperate tournament" and "it's taking up space for a beloved other fighter" are 100% fine. But I'm worried that it could lead to a comicon-like scenario, thats all.
