    Hi All

    I am one of countless that have come before you to get advice on getting motivated to lose weight.

    Two years ago, I was a regular gym goer. I spent about six hours a week in the gym (consisting of cardio, weights, abs workout classes and spinning). I watched my diet and took protein supplements. I looked pretty good, but the day came when I couldn't set foot in the gym again. I had become obsessed with exercise to the stage I was sick of spending so much time in the place.

    Two years on, I have gained at least a stone and a half. I use the gym at work now and again, but I have no routine. I like to practice yoga, especially after a five mile run. Again there is no set routine in place. At the moment my diet is appalling consisting of healthy foods and frequent binges. I really need to address this.

    I am six foot one and I weigh 211 lbs. I am quite stocky from the few years of heavy weights. Yoga has provided good definition to my arms, chest and shoulders. I don't really want to get any more stocky. My energy level is severly lacking, but when it comes to exercise I much prefer a long run to an intense sprint. Is this preference out of laziness?

    If I get my ass in gear I was thinking of centring my exercise regime on -

    Two jogs per week (of between 5 and seven miles [45-60 minutes])
    60 mins of fairly intense, sweaty yoga (probably 30 mins after each jog)
    One or two sessions of HIIT running in the park

    This excludes any walking I regularly do. My questions are the following -

    If my primary goal is weightloss, am I definitely missing out by exluding any weights in my routine?

    Will a HIIT work out benefit someone like me who has for years practised long cardio slogs in the gym or are its benefits overstated?

    Do you have any tips for maintaining interest in workouts? I have found that downloading good songs to run to helps. Have you any other?

    AND yes I know my efforts are futile unless I address my diet.

    If you include weights in your workout you will hold on to more muscle whilst burning away fat. You don't want to just loose weight. Instead aim to loose fat.

    Why not try it and see?

    HIIT will save you time and get you used to working harder. The afterburn of calories is supposedly higher too. i.e. for the rest of the day your metabolism will be burning a few extra calories. This dosen't happen with long cardio slogs where the calorie burn stops straight after the gym.

    Enter a race, run, triathlon, team, etc. If your goal is cardio the A/R/T events forum have a good list of upcoming races.

    Do you have any family/colleagues/friends who are interested in shaping up? Perhaps having a buddy will help with motivation.

    • 8am: porridge
    • 10am: tea, apple
    • ..etc
