Napoleon: Total War

New total war game will be released in the next few months, it looks like.
Based on the Empire engine. Doesn't sound like there's too much different about it, really. Having loads and loads of people on the screen at once, with more variation of faces might be of interest if you have a pc that could render that.
They aren't sure if you will be able to play any factions other than France, from what I read. There will be 3 French campaigns.
It sounds like the Alexander expansion for Rome: Total War really, just applied to Empire: Total War. That's not a bad thing; I enjoyed Alexander probably the most of the Total War games I played: The game moved along a lot faster. The tight time limit meant it was fun right up until the end, where most of the games got boring when your faction became dominant enough. However, it also was quicker to finish though and had lower replay value.
My thoughts are that Napoleon is something more like an expansion being packaged as a new game.

I wonder if it will reflect warfare at the time? I would have rather that this came out as a cheaper expanshion, than a stand alone game. Allowing them to continue to work on the core engine.

I wouldn't allow them to suck my balls, they can suck max's.

We're agreed then. I shall send an email to CA demanding immediate but gentle sucking of my balls.

I am both a civ and TW fan. You should like total war if you like civ. The management part of total war is not as sophisticated as TW, but it has improved since the first total war. Okay, you can't build cities in total war, but you can build improvements and the diplomacy is quite sophisticated.

Started playing Empire again today after reading some preview of N:TW.

Fairly meh still. Though infinitely better than it was.

They should of stuck to fixing medievel total war 2 than running along to Empires.

Empires is a let-down. I doubt Napolean can rescue it folks.

I see there's some kind of Warhammer Mod released for Medieval. Looks fun.

    See here.

Hey..... Im somewhat new to this series.

I purchased the box set on advice from a worker in game 2 or 3 years ago, it had Shogun, Medieval and Rome

Have to say i enjoyd Medievel the most, even went back to it a month or two ago.

Whats the communitys feel for the games, is Medievel everyones favourite?. Granted i didnt play it too long, but Rome to me felt somewhat very small, as in i remember controlling small groups, camera awful close too.
From what i saw of Empire on Youtube it looked to me like Empire was similar to Medievel, did the game take a step back towards that look or is it just me?

Also..... Am i the only one who finds Medievel too hard, when i first got it, i kept picking the UK and Ireland map going Us, then seeing as it was a harder difficulty i tried one or two other factions, it would always mess up after a while, my army would split or the vikings would destroy me, most of my problem was probably bad tactics, but it just felt like an uphill struggle.
I even went back to it and tried the easier factions, which i avoided the first time and i still couldnt do it, after pumping hours in it would go pearshaped somewhere, is it a case of sticking with it?, like is it possible to do it without your army splitting and all those other game ruining events?, i usually quit after something like that happened.

Medieval was my favorite of the series, having said that, if Empire hadn't crashed so much ... I was really enjoying it, I always liked the age of muskets :(

Think I'll take one more stab at playing a full campaign on it.

Here is another PAIR that CA can man handle after the TW fawk up...I mean everytime I see it in my STEAM list I wanna go DELTA and kill someone.

I would not insult my 5970 to fire it up and play it.....L4D2 FTW!!!!!

Try the Warhammer mod for Medieval. It's really good (make sure to get the english patch unless you are fluent in russian). More enjoyable than Empire, I promise you.

Mind you, it did crash on me. The models are really excellent, loads of factions etc.

I find the Lord of The Rings Mod for Kingdoms is way way better than the Warhammer Mod, doesn't crash at all (in my experience) and is just a lot more professional with a lot of varied factions playable.

Yeah, It was showing 23rd release on EU Steam, but that changed to Friday yesterday.

Early reports are positive. They've paired down the scope for this, which is a good idea – Empire was too ambitious.

Positive reports like this on the CA forums. I pre-ordered from Steam today, which I now regret given that it's a 24GB download. Most the feedback on the CA forums seems positive, which they needed after the turd that is Empire.

I'm after taking a chance and getting this! Downloading it now, news so far its big improvement on Empire. Fingers crossed!

It's a very good game, in my opinion. The AI is better; the build up of smoke and craters in battles is a nice touch; and no lag or crashes so far. I've just finished the first campaign (Italy), hopefully it won't turn sour as it goes on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 991 ✭✭✭ZZR1100

    played 1 multiplayer campaign (italy)
    works really well.
i got my ass kicked though.
i tried 2 others but the the opponents droped out early which is a pain.
you really need a friend or some1 who wont drop out before starting a long game.

Definitely a big improvement on ETW.
Battle AI is definitely a lot better than ETW although it still does the odd strange thing but you definitely can't take any battle for granted, have to watch your whole line as it does try and find weaknesses.

Its a different type of feel to the campaigns, you can't wait around to build up big armies and develop your economy, its battle after battle.
Only managed to complete the Italian and Egyptian campaigns on the last turn.

Playing the Grand Campaign for the last couple of hours. Navy wiped out by the Brits early on so built up an army, landed in Waterford and liberated Ireland (loving the new liberate country option, they automatically become your protectorate), onto Scotland and liberated them and am now currently fighting my way through England.

Im on the Egyptian campaign and finding it hard enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,629 ✭✭✭talla

Im on the Egyptian campaign and finding it hard enough.

Yeh when I was playing it, had to restart the Egyptian Campaign because I knew I wasn't going to get it completed because I wasn't aggressive enough.
Wasted an army on Cyprus so I'd advise ignoring that mission.

My tactics of landing in Ireland and liberating Ireland and Scotland have worked as I've just destroyed the British and now have the freedom of the North Atlantic trade spots.

Napoleon currently stuck in Hannover fighting battle after battle to try and defend from the Prussians.
I have a two pronged attack aiming for Vienna with an army from Venice which I've liberated and Bavaria.

Allies are a big improvement and actually help in the game, any time the Austrians try and take Tirol from me, the Bavarians cross the border and sort them out. The Dutch also sent an army all the way from Holland by land to help me fight Naples (wish they'd give me a hand in Hannover though).

I used to auto-resolve about 75% of battles in the other Total War games, now I'm finding I'm playing almost every battle.

    .

Well I dunno can I ignore cyprus, seeing as the english just landed an army by ship near my capital ,Im finding this campaign hard because every time I take a city they always rebel and I dont have enough troops to deal with them,So I may have to start again.

Don't loot a city unless you are completely broke, choose to occupy the city.
Build about 3 militia units in a city and disable taxes. When the happiness goes back to 3-4 for peasants and nobility, move your main army off for your next conquest (usually happens in a couple of turns once all building have been repaired). After about 10 turns or so you can then start taxing the city.
You'll only get the odd rebellion in some of the hardcore cities.

Is the campaign part any better than in Empire? I always liked the battles in the TW series, but found the campaign map play really tedious (wait for units to crawl, click endlessly to upgrade buildings, wait for computer to move).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,789 ✭✭✭grizzly

With only 4 major factions, for me all AI turns only take 10 seconds. It's more streamlined and battle focused.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,019 ✭✭✭Polar101

Well, I ordered the game. It's not a full price title, and it looks fun enough - can't really go wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭Coriolanus

Oo AI can competently invade by sea now?
I might have to pick it up after all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,255 ✭✭✭anonymous_joe

As someone whose a big fan of all the Total War games, but found Empire fairly lacking, is this worth picking up?

Lost CD key for Medieval II which means I might as well throw the disk into the bin :mad::mad: And the Kingdoms disk along with it  and the various mods for the game.

    S'pose I might buy Napoleon...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,509 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Bought it there the other day, first total war game since Medieval 2 (played empire demo, thought it was rough, skipped it and glad I did in the end).

The only problem is I have no idea how to use artillery and rifles, my strategies are awful and I'm struggling in battles. Swords and sandals this is not.

You'll get used to this fairly quickly. It's all about placing your artillery in good support positions and maintaining your line infantry in effective formations. Throw in cavalry for flanking or driving off broken/routing units etc. It's a great game, but different style of warfare. Only problem I have with Napoleon is that the map should have been bigger, like in Empire. I would have liked to have gone into Africa, Americas and India when i finished in European theatre, or had the option of more elaborate strategies using these territories.

England can easily be taken out by an early attack on Ireland and Scotland, giving independence to the nations.
