when i pinch back my shoulders/shoulder blades, slightly arch my back and push out my chest im hearing a "pop" coming from my chest (i think its coming from my chest anyhow) not all the time but it could happen a few times in the day.

its like the sound of two bones popping out of place or something.its not sore and tbh i actually feels good sometimes...:)

its only started happening in the last maybe 2 months...

is there an explanation for this??

Bad things rarely feel good, except those little guilty pleasure's which we keep to ourselves :P

But seriously what you describe is normal, like cracking your knuckles!.

To keep some flexibilty in my back I've to do more or less the same, when I get it free 'tis a good as a whooping great fart :D

You should prob hit the owl doctors. Backs and shoulders are complex things.

Happens a lot to me, although more so when I my back is bad.
It could be "joint popping" (for want of a better phrase) in either the sternum or the thoracic spine. If its painful or uncomfortable you might consider getting adjusted by an Osteopath, a doctor or something of the like.

Happens me all the time. Feels great when it cracks. I find lying arched over a foam raoller gets a really good one out.

It's just a crack. It feels like your sternum cracking but maybe it's your back I dunno.

Seriously, go to the doctors? And say what? Jesus I know why I have to wait 2 hours in a room full of perfectly healthy looking people if I'm sick now.

I had something similar when i was lifting heavy weights, i had it looked at and the physio said was completely normal, it had me scared for a while but damn it felt good :)

Don't have it now because i'm not lifting any weights because i'm so damn lazy...................

Some people won't go to a chairo or Osteo.
Its better than nothing, IF there is a problem.
And it CAN be a problem.

so from my experiences and others,it appears that this is normal and or harmless,as i was thinking really...has anyone been told what it is?is there a name or term for it?

is it a common occurance for weight lifters?

    Hi Barry,

I'm a chiropractor, and this is a common question patients ask.

Most of the time, this "popping" sound is the result of a quick separation of the joints which causes the release of some gas from the lubricating fluid inside the joint. When you increase the volume of the joint momentarily, you decrease the pressure on the liquid inside, and a bubble of gas is released that "pops", resulting in a characteristic sound. It takes about 15 minutes for that gas to dissolve back into the lubricating fluid, which is why people can't reproduce the sound immediately after having done it. Patients sometimes worry that they're cracking bones or knocking them out of place, which is very unlikely, especially if there is no pain involved.

The link to crepitus might be misleading - this is used to describe a grinding sensation and sound between two bones where the cartilage has broken down, as in arthritis. It is commonly accompanied by pain in the joints that are affected.

Of course, as with anything of this nature, it's best to consult a professional (chiropractor, osteopath, GP, etc) for a proper physical exam to determine the exact cause of your complaint.

    Regards,

    Brian

but i dont have a complaint as such,i just wanted to know what it was known as really, thanks for the reply.

there isnt any pain from it & it happens to a few on here so im not worried at all, just curious.

why would it just start happening?is it a result of lifting weights?heavier weights?
