I'm doing that course next year too:) it sounds really good, can't wait:D at the open day they gave a really good talk on it and they said if you have any more questions to get in contact with the Law & Govn. lecturers! Sorry I don't really have much to help you with :o

Yeah I looked at that but apparently its not approved by kings inns, so its not ideal if I want to be a Barrister. I'm leaning towards being a solicitor but its perhaps best to keep all options open?

    Bigdeadlydave,

Saw your post there man and thought I could help! Im the Class Rep for BCL/1 so might be able to offer you some kinda student insight into the degree? I was the guy who spoke to the people at the Open Day about the degree, and thanks OoOROiSiNOoO for saying you thought it went ok!

So anyway we study the core legal subjects in first year and then depending on your preferences you can decide to shift the focus of your degree towards the Kings Inns side of things if you wish to be a Barrister or for the FE1s and Blackhall Place to be a solicitor, either way this degree can set you on your path. Firstly its a recognised degree from Kings Inns, so the subjects you sit here will let you avoid the part time course other people have to do and you can head straight for the entrance exams.

Personally I have found the degree to be a hugely interesting program. Already we have had prominent barristers, the Legal Editor of the Irish Times, the film censor, the Dean and Registrar of Kings Inns, solicitors come in to talk and discuss the professional career options with us and the faculty are always on the look out for ways to improve our general legal education which really sets us apart in other ways from the other colleges. We also have Criminal Law class trips to Mountjoy Prison where we see the current state of the Irish Prison System is really like.

    In first year you will study these subjects;

Foundations of Law and Legal Research- most helpful trust me!
    The Irish Legal System
    Constitutional Law
    Law of Torts
    Criminal Law
    Advanced Constitutional Law
    Advanced Criminal Law
    Advanced Torts
    The Law of Contract
    European Union Law

Our lecturers are all very into the class debate situation which is probably the best way to get your head around the Legal Issues. We divide each subject generally speaking between assignments and written exams, this year for me its 30% assigments 70% exams that go toward your final grade. And even at that the exams are mostly problem questions which are interesting to get your head around, its mostly a hypothetical situation where you are to advice a client on the legal issues (most of the time a few sly ones hidden too!) and to advise them based on the laws, acts, case law, constitution, etc!

If you have any other queries at all you can private mail me on this or find me on Facebook or whatever suits, I'd be more that happy to help with anything or meet with anyone on campus, its part of my role as a student here and as class rep!:)

    Dave

I wonder what the male/female ratio will be for this course?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40 arryanna

Hmmm, well I'd imagine Law would be pretty mixed? It wouldn't be like engineering or nursing where there's a pretty obvious divide :)

I am from Drogheda! So I am in the unfortunate position of not being quite close enough for it to be handy and not far enough away to justify renting(so my father says!) So I will be getting the bus, and maybe crashing at a relations house some days.

What about yourself? My name is Dave btw!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭Wolfe Tone

Yeah 10 am seems fine. Oh thats handy!

Yeah just did it this year, but I did TY as well so I am delighted to see the back of school! 6 years was too long :( Yourself?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭ldxo15wus6fpgm

Nice one finding the timetable... didn't even think of looking for it :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭Wolfe Tone

Oh guys, whats the difference between a tutorial and a lecture? :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭ldxo15wus6fpgm

AFAIK the tutorial is a small class with discussion and debat while the lecture would be bigger and much more impersonal... open to correction here

Hmmm Law and Legal research "This is how to use the index of a book" haha

Yeah thats what I was thinking, what would be the practical part?

Wish I had of not done TY and took a year out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭Wolfe Tone

I counted all the tutorials towards my weekly hour count.... you only go to one of them, and it lasts an hour. So thats 8hrs a week I think.

Same. Regret TY so much :( Only upside is that I made one of my closest friends through it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭Wolfe Tone

Yeah, it was fun at the time, but I could have done so much more on a year out than I did in TY. Made some great friends though, hopefully I will make more in DCU :)
