Dont know if this is worth getting involved in but if anyone is looking to vent there is a cycling 'conversation' going on in R&R...

Bear in mind the R&R forum charter, for instance:
If you don't like the rant, don't post in the thread. Posts attempting to defuse a rant, counter a rant, belittle a rant etc. will be deleted and may incur bans and/or infractions.

It is not a discussion forum in the normal sense of the word "discussion".

tbf the poster is right, same with drivers who think indicating gives them licence to change lane. You indicate as a sign of intention, you still need to check and move when its safe to do so.

I went into that thread and had to quickly leave before i got a R&R ban there is a few comments i would like to reply to by as Lumen says its not a disscussion forum.

    Leave it.

I made the mistake of engaging in a "debate" on R&R a while back without reading the forum charter Lumen refers to above. The discourse I employed - based around the assumption that posters on forums were open to the possibility of accommodation - was completely out of kilter with the dominant discourse there. (Which for what it's worth, is roughly equivalent to opening a window and roaring about whatever's infuriating you at any given moment. It doesn't invite a calm response.)

Unless, of course, you consider that yesterday's thread on listening to an Ipod was anything other than a colossal waste of time in which case...

Go in and agree to the point of ridiculousness. Its the only way.

I thought yesterdays thread on iPod listening was great. There is a one sidedness to what passes for discussion on this forum. I offered a contrary view and was attacked for it by half a dozen posters. I held my own with the lot of them and the thread turned into the most viewed thread on the forum for the day! Just because someone has a different opinion to you doesnt make it a "colossal waste of time".
The fact that you appear to still want to reference it shows how successful the thread was. I provoke quite a response on this forum but y'all love the debate really!

Though should one really judge one's own performance in a debate? There might be a slight bias.

Thanks Pete. Holding my own against half a dozen other posters, yea I 'll happily judge my own performance - I wasnt expecting any plaudits from the usual suspects on here but I'm delighted you chose to acknowledge my performance!:D

I saw the R&R thread last week, but was too busy on Friday to post it. However I couldn't resist lighting the blue touch paper on the iPod thread yesterday, and then retreating a safe distance to observe the consequences:D

You contributed to the most viewed discussion the cycling forum yesterday. More of this please!

    Timothy

Never got round to making one point yesterday, as the thread was closed.

I note you seem to spend more time on the cycling forum than any other. In fact, well over 75% of your posts are here. Your contribution to the motors forum is minimal (apart from your first post, which probably belonged in R&R)

Anyway, are you going to admit it - you really are a cyclist aren't you? You only come over here to look for tips and wind (some of) us up, don't you?

I see over on R&R you've chosen to take an anti cyclist stance. I hope this was just a cynical attempt to disrupt that thread rather than a symptom of an underlying mental disorder!

Ladies & Gents of the cycling forum,

The cycling and R&R forums have crossed paths before and as a result we have a strict rule where we do not allow rants against specific boards.ie forums or posters.

If the rant annoys you I suggest you don't bother reading it because it won't get any better.

We have a motoring rant thread which you are more than welcome to use to vent your anger about motorists on the road - and no one can mess with your rant.

As for our dear friend TimAllen who will no doubt read this post and have some sort of comment....this is the result of his meddling :)

Really, do we have to keep tolerating this guy ? He quite clearly contributes nothing to the forum, antagonizes posters and revels in the response. I don't know how many times he has been banned, perhaps a 3 strikes rule on the forum !

Gavin, have a heart. Tim is here for the down trodden motorist...... Noone ever thinks of cars when they are designing roads these days. And the errant manner these cyclists are flinging themselves at cars. Bullying the good taxpaying motorists off the roads. Who is speaking up for these poor people?? It's time you thought of someone other than yourself.

Maybe when you're the king of debating the cycling mods will listen to you Gavin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

Furthermore, as noone who posts on the cycling forum owns a car, has a license or would know what to do with a car if they were presented with one (apart from cycle head first towards it). I find it very enlightening to have first hand accounts of the oppression we are inflicting on motorists.

I only got banned once, for 7 days for apparently insulting another member. I didnt think that I had but I took it on the chin. I dont know where you are coming from with "I don't know how many times he has been banned, perhaps a 3 strikes rule on the forum !" Just becuase my viewpoint doesnt agree with yours doesnt mean I shouldnt be here, otherwise it starts resembling 1930's Germany!

38 posts to Godwin's Law, a bit slow that, especially considering all the John Demjanjuk coverage today...

Never mind, I googled it and found this on wikipedia:
"However, Godwin's Law itself can be abused, as a distraction, diversion or even censorship, that fallaciously miscasts an opponent's argument as hyperbole, especially if the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate. A 2005 Reason magazine article argued that Godwin's Law is often misused to ridicule even valid comparisons"

Well comparing the cycling forum to 1930's germany is not valid so use of godwins law in this case is acceptable.

Indeed. I'm sure the good people at Reason magazine (which is actually worth a read for those who haven't heard of it, even if they are raving libertarians) will agree that this is one of those occasions when Godwin's law shouldn't apply. Boards Cycling Form = Nazi Germany.

says you as judge and jury. I disagree. In any case I didnt make reference to Nazi's. Just to 1930's Germany - there is a difference!;)

Does this mean that Luman and his co mods can be compared to SS officers? And we are rank and file nazi's (sorry 1930's Germans) what would that make Tim.........?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

I could picture Lumen in an SS uniform, plus he has the english accent which is generally how Nazis sound in Hollywood movies, unless it's Tom Cruise and he just plays himself.

I would ask you to explain the difference but that would be off topic for a cycling forum. Now back to the serious business of discussing cyclists on the footpad
