You asked for the best :D

I always end up breaking headphones so i gave up buying expensive ones.
I currently have a set of these! Not too expensive and great sound. One of the best sets I have owned.

it depends on what kind of music you like listening to.

Me I like a decent amount of bass so I use these.. the sound is decent but the short headphone cable really wrecks my head sometimes..not to mention the fiddly neck strap thing

sound is very good and price is very reasonable

I used to sell this kind of gear in a previous life so I know a good pair when I hear them.. these are way better than what comes with the iPod and better than the equivalent sennheisers..by some distance

if you are buying.. try the EP-630 first.. someone you know might have a pair that could you try if you both don't mind sharing a bit of ear wax!

yes, but give us a bone here.

    best headphones? come on?

it's like saying what's the best car?

sure even the ones i suggested wouldn't be the best, but they are damn comfy.

if you had given a price range i would have stuck to it, you didn't so i assumed it was no expense spared.

I've been a fan of Koss plug/sparkplug earphones for a few years, they recently release the iSpark earphones, they have an inline mic with push to talk button, no volume controls though. They have good bass and they block out alot of noise, they are more comfortable for me when I go running also.

They can be bought in Tower Records for 40 euro, or from amazon for less,

the op is look you didn't link to a pair of grado sr1000's, they have a price tag in the 4 figures
given the reaction to the price i guess the op meant the best he can get down his local argos or the like..suffice to say they will be pretty much all the same quality which will be close enough to poor

i use a pair of shure e3cs for in ear, a pair of grado sr80's at work, and i have a pair of sennheiser hd280's at home for the ipod/iphone, sometimes used with a headphone amp, the 280's especially work better with the amp , the iphone struggles to drive them

For me the best are a pair of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Extended Bass with comply foam tips.

That's if you like the "In Da Club" feel, which I do :D.

I find the stock ones with the 3gs keep falling out (I must need to put on some weight in the ear department). I think I need in-ear ones. Having the volume and answer control on the headphones seems handy too as you dont have to keep taking out the phone all the time which looks a bit posey.

I was thinking of something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-MM50iP-Headset-integrated-microphone/dp/B001FWYXF0/ref=pd_sim_ce_2

I see you can get bluetooth ones too though (which would be nice to eliminate cable snagging), are they much heavier (as they need a battery I guess), how often do they need charging, is the sound much worse?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 iphonefreak

Peolpe will probably laugh but the best earphones i have had are the ones that come with 3gs, best sound, look and never break.

Since i started getting into ipods and iphones i have lots of different pair rangeing from 20- 100 euro and still find myself reverting back to the original apple ones.

Ok you can stop laughing now and starting saying that im cracked.

each to their own, but i recently had to use the iphone headphones on a flight to boston cause i forgot my shures. they are the most metallic sounding, devoid of bass, shrill on the high end pieces of garbage i have ever put in my ears..

the el cheapo ear buds aer lingus gave out were even marginally better..

they are slo lacjing in any bass or depth i don't think anyone who tries anything approaching decent headphones would ever go back to them

which makes me wonder, what 100 headphones did you try.

    massym,

have a pair of scosche increased dynamic that costed me 89 euro and that they seemed to be very low and distance, the apple ones are very clear on my iphone 3gs and on my iphone touch

I had these for a few weeks ... sound quality was much better than the stock 'phones, but I ended up giving them away. The asymmetric cord never "sat" right, no matter how I tried to adjust it. The cord always seemed to be pulling to one side or the other.

I use an old JVG "gum drop" set most days ... for flying / trains I use a set of sound isolating Sennheisers, old-skool headphones.
I used to have a set of Creative over the ear noise cancelling headphones, that did a great job of isolating sound, but they were too heavy to keep.

Maybe I'm old fashioned ... but I can't see value in earphones costing more than 100 lids.

    Just got these

    http://www.consumer.philips.com/c/mp3-player-accessories/shn9500_00/prd/gb/

A nice set, not too big over the ear. Good sound, assuming you are not an audiophile. Comfy, I have worn them the best part of the day just to test the comfort of them, and they are perfect! I had an old sony pair I had to keep removing after 20 mins!!

Available for €100 at Dublin Airport. Down from €150

    iphanefreak

i try and avoid snobbery in terms of audio stuff, but have to say here that i've never eeven heard of scosche, and for a hundred euros i'd be looking for something with a proven track record, for portable use i'd look at shure, or the denons sound pretty nice, for more home use i'd be looking at grados, hiwch i prefer over most of the sennheisers, until you get to the hd600/650 level.

believe me, a couple of hours listening to any of them will change your mind on the quality of the included buds that come with the iphone

Do all these iPhone headphone recommendations have microphones built in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭Drakar

    No most are just headphones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

I have these, they have the built in microphone as well which is very handy for taking calls and skipping tracks. Good bass plus the cable is made from fabric which is brilliant as they never get tangled up like normal cables do.

I think that the sound is better with the apple ones as they are build and designed especially for the iphone/ipod so they are crisp and clear, and other ones that are more expensive are not that compatable even though they are really good headphones.

would likw to hear how you think they are not cimpatible the headphone amp in the ipod/iphone is a generic headphone amp which shares the same characteristics as every other headphone amp. they're all able to drive a headphone load , usually 32/64 ohms, some can drive it harder than others, but hats about it. designed for the ipod/iphone? so if i point out that the sound output on the ipod video, versus the ipod classic, versus the ipod touch/iphone are all pretty different, then how were one headphones designed specifically for them?

i have no problem with anyone saying they prefer the sound of the iphone buds, only suggest that iif they tried better headphones they might realize what higher quality sound is, if they don't then i'm glad they have a set they enjoy. however you can't start calling headphones incompatible for no reason other than you prefer a different type
the one thing the ipod headphones were designed to be were low cost. not specifically designed to get the most from the ipod. the "incompatible headphones" make a mockery of that. your crisp and clear for many people will equate to devoid of bass and shrill high end.

again, i'm not attacking you opinion about which you prefer, just some pretty outrageous comments with no proof.

They dont seem to have inline volume control, I see apple actually do have in-ear ones too http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MA850G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1MA&mco=MTA4NDA3NTk#overview not sure on quality though.

tbh, the stock iphone earphones are rubbish.

I have a pair of Bose earphones that i paid €100 for and i could instantly hear a massive difference in sound quality.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,766 Mod ✭✭✭✭mossym

personnel insults.nice. first claims with no truth or proof, then insults, if that is as far as your argument or opinion goes then so be it

i already said a number of times if people do find the apple buds the best then i'm happy out for them. i offered some choices that might change that opinion, the questioned your rather ill advised claim that only the apple buds were compatible with the ipod.

as for being a know it all, i have a degree in electronics, and i work in the home av sector, so yeah i do have a lot of knowledge here, but i'll take someone who (bases their username on a product and calls themselves a freak for it) calling me a marketers dream with a pinch of salt..i offered sifferent suggestions at different price poitns, some way less than a hundred euros, i don't expect everyone wants to spend a fortune on a pair of headphones

i'm sure the vast majority would agree with me the included buds are rubbish. if that offends you then perhaps you should stay clear of topics where peopleare asking for alternatives....

I'll second that the included earbuds are rubbish, whatever about the sound quality they don't even stay in your ears and are seriously uncomfortable. Might be ok if you sit still and stare straight ahead but once you turn or move they just fall out.

Its something to do with how your ear is, some people cant wear that sort at all and other people can go jogging in them no problem. To be fair, the bundled earphones (including microphone and volume/navigation control) are like £21 from apple, so its fair to assume ones for €100 should be better too yay.

skullcandy full metal jacket 11mm iphone earphones are excellent value (£45), bassy and have a pause/answer/mic built into the reinforced cable. they also come with a lifetime warranty which they do honour.

I have a quick question - what about noise cancelling headphones - i spend most of my headphone time commuting on trains and walking by noisy roads to work. Are these the right babies for me ?

i found the shures seal so tight in your ears they block all external sound anyway, and are a bit cheaper than noise cancelling. however some of the noise cancelling headphones are supposed to be very good

i agree with this, noise cancelling chips in earphones are quite gimmicky and can never match the natural noise cancellation of proper IEM's (in-ear monitors) like shure's and ultimate ears.

i have the ultimate ears fi5 for travelling as everyone else on the bus has standard ipod earphones that are more leaky than a bunch of leeks and they block out everything even with my phone only on 50% volume.

Lets not get confused people. What you guys are talking about is noise isolating, as opposed to noise cancelling, which is a totally different thing all together.

yup, agreed, but if you can isolate the noise enough then surely you don't need to cancel it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 140 ✭✭scottyboy

agree, the skullcandy phones do not have any official noise cancelling ability but the fit is excellent. i have used on buses, trains and planes without any issues and have even used them as earplugs with no ipod to when on holiday to block out noise!

they come with three sizes of ear "collar" in two types, silicon rubber and memory foam. guarantees a good fit!

Do the Skullcandy FMJs work with the iphone 2G (mic functions)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 140 ✭✭scottyboy

    good question!

I have a 3G iPhone and it works fine. The 2G iPhone has a recessed headphone socket but you can get an adapter to extend the socket. FMJs do not come with an adapter but the usual iPhone adapter should do the job. The mic'd earphones have a 3.5mm plug has three sections on the body of the plug plus the tip whereas standard stereo headphones 3.5mm plugs have two sections on the body of the plug plus the tip.

    Hope that make sense :o

    Hey Scotty,

Currently using a pair of Sony headphones (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/537280-DEMO/Sony_MDRED21LP__DEMO_MDR_ED21LP_In_Ear_Stereo.html) with an adapter which works well - if only making the phone a bit more awkward with the extra length of the adapter. The adapter I have has 3 black bands on it. Really looking for a pair with an in-line mic that'll work the with 2G.

I use Bose Triport on ear headphones and find them great. Have had them for about 3years. After 11 months the sound from one ear stopped working and I got onto Bose, they sent me a brand new pair and I'm very thankful for their customer service too.

Some people like them, others hate them, but I find them very comfortable, great sounding and small enough to fold away. I previously tried some very expensive in-ear isolating headphones, but they would find a way to work themselves out of my ears while walking and I was always fiddling with them to get them to stay in. Before that, I used Sony in-ear isolating headphones and they were pretty good. I only changed when they broke.

For now, the Bose are great for me. I consider that if they broke or got lost I'd replace them with the same set. The newer versions are sold with the inline microphone, there is also a bunch of 3rd party extenders on ebay for a couple of euro.

    Cheers

good idea as I bought mine in tower records then went to canada and found them for the same price, as in €60 = $60 !!!!!!

    good luck

Right, as I complained about in another thread, my second pair of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5vi just died. Same fault, same place. Poor wiring in cable near the jack so you end up losing all sound to the right earpiece.

So I'm in the market for a new ~€100 headset. To be honest I don't care about the microphone but the remote is pretty important to me. My second choice before going with the UEs were the (aging) Etymotic HF2s. Now Etymotic have released a new cheaper version called the MC3. The only difference being it uses a (cheaper) moving coil design rather than the balanced single armature drivers found in the HF2 (and their replacements, the new HF3s). My dillema is that the MC3s are now about the same price as the HF2s on amazon! Do I go for the newer model MC3s with a different (possibly slightly inferior) driver but comes with kevlar reinforced cables and a 3 button remote OR stay with the proven quality of the HF2s???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭IamMetaldave

I have a set of Bose in ears (And Super Fi 5s although never use) and I love them. They have a pair that have the remote on them also. Some people say they're over priced and paying for the name etc.. but recently mine right ear went, after 20 months of use! I didn't have proof of purchase (as they were a gift) and I contacted Bose and they asked me to return them and they would see if they would replace under warranty and they did. I got a brand new set. Great company, great sound. Check them out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,376 ✭✭✭54kroc

I'd save up a little more money and go with the HF3's, you won't regret it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭brianhickey

I also had a pair of those Ultimate Ears break on me, rubbish build quality. Great sound though. I'm now using the Apple In-Ears with remote and mic and I think they're brilliant for the money (about €70). Comfortable, stay in my ears even when jogging, and the remote and mic are handy. I haven't tried any of the more expensive ones but the Shures have a great reputation.
