So I was told recently that the 10 commandments aren't actually written in the bible. This has me thinking, what other 'facts' just aren't true?
Think QI here, not 'global warming is a myth'.

It isn't? Wow, that's pretty interesting. So where did the ten commandments come from then?

They are in there two times!
Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, and Mark 10:17-31 builds on many of them also.

Don't believe everything people tell you.

I could have sworn they were until someone showed me the commandments in their bible and they involved not cooking goats in their own milk or some such nonsense. It isn't really what I wanted the thread to be about, it's just what got me thinking on a Sunday night.

Smoking used to be considered good for you until the 1950's when a survey noted one group of people died younger.

After running the stats on every possible permuntation of lifestyle, work, nutritian etc only smoking fitted!

yup, it's totally made up. It's the greatest prank science has ever pulled.

Though when you think about it,the time fabricating all that evidence and all those lessons in keeping a straight face while talking about it, probably could have been used to cure cancer and AIDS but nope, giant practical joke time!

Swimming less than an hour after eating can cause cramps, if you eat a decent sized meal.

Ah yes, there are dietary laws that the Jews followed that are no longer applicable to Christians.

In the Jewish scriptures, the 10 commandments are contained twice, once in Exodus, and the other time in Deuteronomy. In the Jewish law there are 613 commandments or mitzvot which determine life from judicial issues when there was a Jewish state in Israel, to issues of cultural living, dress and eating.

There are three types of law in the Jewish text, 1) Moral, 2) Legal, 3) Ceremonial / Cultural. After the advent of Christianity it was only laws of morality that were retained as Christianity included non-Jews as well as Jews.

If you want more information on Jewish dietary law, check the wikipedia entry on kosher eating.

    "My rights as a consumer"

I have the right to return my 6 month old TV because I don't like it and I expect a full refund.
If something is advertised at a price, I have the right to buy it at that price no matter how crazy it may seem.
Every shop has to accept refunds of things I don't want and if they are being difficult shouting out "I know my rights" makes the manager cower in fear and give in.

Using phones or cameras mess up the navigation system on the plane and somehow make it fall out of the sky.

If it was that easy then all any air force has to do is send a flying mobile out instead of missiles to down the enemy.

Women can Multitask, accepted fact? Yeah right!

If that was the case then how come when my OH is cooking dinner and minding my nephew, as she cleans the floors the dishes - does she feel the need to bite my head off cause I ask her to iron one shirt?

That eating before swimming gives you cramps stuff is a complete myth, it doesn't effect you.

Also mixing drinks doesn't make you drunker. It makes you drunker because to mix drinks you have to drink more.

Also, Martin Luther pinning up his beef with the church on a big door and starting the Reformation - never happened.

Yes it does. If you exert yourself swimming then eating heavily beforehand almost certainly will affect you.

Why? And how does it give you cramps?

I'm gonna take Stephen Fry's word on this. He is omniscient after all.
