    TV3 for me, especially their 5.30pm news compared with RTE's 6pm & 9pm bulletins.

Thoughts relevant to what though - TV3 inane morning TV crap, with some useful news spots versus re-runs of casualty (at 9 am!) on RTE.
    An afternoon of self-serving nonsense.
Some occasional quality news and current affairs from RTE vs. ITV re-runs on TV3 in the evening. Then Vincent, god bless him and his considerable debts. Oh to retire gracefully.
All-in-all almost equally crap, but I have to pay for RTE.

I prefer tv3.. however I cannot stand those two idiots on in the daytime who spend half an hour telling us what great programmes are coming up... wtf?? do these people get paid to do that.. totally totally pointless... however couldnt live without jeremy kyle nor judge judy, highlights lol x

TV3 just serve up imported tripe that appeals to the brain washed masses. Although RTE are not perfect, they do at least produce some quality home made shows and do in general offer a good public service.

In before the lock, I've decided, TV3 is just a load of SH1TV.

I reserve judgement on all else though, TV4 and RTE is all else we got (oh and DCC...).

RTE any day of the week, TV3 is merely UTV on DVD.

    Right.
With the exception of Vincent Browne I can watch UTV so TV3 are just wasting a location on my tuner.
Almost forgot: if I feel like wasting money they'll help me do that with PlayTV.

The great thing about TV3 is that its sooooo bad, you actually think rte is better...
    Sad really.

AS for Tv3 awards, for surviving this long, is it?
In all fairness, what in the name of **** do TV3 offer?
3 or 4 for chat shows, (morn, noon, tea time (yes i'm refering to Xpose as chat ) and then night, (poor Vincent - still little comp at that time) and, well em, the weather report?
Have to say though, got a glimpse of the Assistant Manager comedy series thing -seemed ok - if TV3 commissioned it, (which was all they continously promised at the begining) fair play - but about bloody time.

That was produce for Setanta Sport (with assistance of the licence fee). TV3 bought it from them to what the audience would be like. I don't think it fared to well.

You sound like a communist! How are they supposed to survive if they are not profit driven? Sure I could say that RTE was state funded drivel (which it is most of the time).

The easy way out. The idea that people are some how entrapenures and that they have entrapenurail spirt. TV3 rely as I have alway said on ITV imports. this just isn't good enough. While I do understand that TV3 is a commercial entity they do have a responsibility. The CEO of the company described the broadcasting environment as a communionist one, now by this he ment that RTÉ have a monopoly and look at poor old TV3 the model of capitalism and in his own words "the smart economy". TV3 as a commerical entity is very very financially save. However CanWest's model is that of playing it save. Get a government licence role out cheap imports and have a 7% - 10% audience and get a quick return. Nothing wrong with that. However it doesn't tell the monopoly get off your arse and start make some TV. No instead the monopoly looks on at a commercial rival with antipathy and well does what it alway did, plod along nicely. (And we can all agree that CanWest made a pretty penny on its Irish business).

TV3's business model is simple get audience with imported programming and make sure the minimum home produce programming is provided. Hence extensions of Ireland AM et al so they can push out their hours on the air TV3 remember is now a 24 hour service, 30% of 24? (Just like play TV I will let you work that out). And thus sell advertising again nothing wrong with this.

Now I would rather TV3 invested money into the country. They after all push enough of the money out of the country. This is not smart nor does it help to promote the audio visual industry in Ireland rather it deams Irish Product as purely minimums upon which to keep, forgoing any insight into other areas of work.

TV3 should provide other programming, why bother if all you are going to do is import programming, lets face it Sky et al make plently of money let them do it, TV3 could be run from London and still make the same kind of money.

As I have said on several occasions: It is very easy to take the high ground on RTÉ, and more difficult to take the high ground on TV3. You can make money on high quality product.

RTE for me although I tend to stay away from the box as much as I can!

I'm surprised that TV3 Vs RTE is even a question. You cannot compare the two.

TV3 doesnt make anything except the news, agenda, the Apprentice (ok, thats good I'll grant you but its a direct copy of a foreign show) and celebrity driven drivel like expose and stupid docs about models.

RTE on the other hand makes an enormous amount of excellent documentaries, brilliant current affairs progs, drama, soap (ok FC is brutal, I admit it), childrens tv, home produced sports progs etc.

Most of what TV3 shows can be seen on ITV. At least RTE aspires to be intelligent....

God sometimes I wonder if RTÉ aspires to be intelligent.

FC is like any other soap brutal, they should be axed. all of them :)

rte by a distance, champions league, league of ireland, movies, good documentaries yeah rte definetly better

tv3 represents all that is wrong with many people in ireland.

the Apprentice (ok, thats good I'll grant you but its a direct copy of a foreign show)

So what. Nearly everything on television is a copy or influenced by a foreign show somewhere.

Even the UK Apprentice is a copy of the original US show.

That's a bit vague isn't it? Could you put some meat on the bones of this sentence please? I am interested to see where the connection is between TV3 and the ills of this country.confused.gif

'tis a bit of a statement. Makes TV3 look like they are actually doing something constructively cultural.

I guess the poster means that TV3 is more vain than most TV. Lets face it it is possibly the only National Commercial Broadcasters in the world with a Prime Time Daily show biz/glamour show.

    Box packers in reality.

RTE beats TV3 hands down except in one area ----morning TV. RTE just reruns the awful) Afternoon Show(never recovered from losing Marty and Mary Kennedy) from the previous day. RTE beats TV3 for news and current affairs. Vincent Brown is entertaining on TV3 but last 20 mins of his show is becoming a mess due to constant ad breaks.

Probably a lot more than you would expect.

The recession has certainly created many more persons with the opportunity.
Also, if you fall asleep while waiting for someone to get through to PlayTV3 with an answer you may waken in time for morning news.

If your unemployed take it easy and get up at 2pm for the next few week :) you may as well, it would better for you than watching Morning/Daytime TV. I think effects you :) turn the radio on otherwise. Boxsets are also another option or books both of which you can get in your local library.

And going to bed with Play TV on in the back round is also not good, RTÉ show a number of quality late night TV shows from the US.

    No brainer.

For me RTE is light years ahead of TV3 which I consider to be the second worse channel.

Of course the worse channel for me is where TV3 get most of its content from, that is ITV. Now I know there are worse (like shopping channels etc...) however with the large budget they have, they still manage to produce consistent tripe day in day out.

But I hate TV nowadays and barely watch any at all, less than 1 hour a day and that's to watch the 6-1 news. And I still had to cough up €160 for the licence. :(

The internet for me is far more entertaining. :)
