Already almost blown into cars etc yesterday, I'm not risking it today. Did any of you?

    I'm about to, 17km due south :(

Probably going to add 10-20 minutes to my normal commute. On the plus side it'll be like sitting on a cruise missile on the way home :)

I may be taking the 42mm deep section rim off the front, but I'll be heading off in a little while... may give it an hour to die down first though

Rathgar to Dundrum was fun...wind direction was changing almost every 2 mins:)

The wind cycled me to work this morning - I was going to be late, i got in bang on time ;)

Had a few close ones yesterday, sneaky side winds !
Think i'll leave the bike at home today :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭dario28

    Didnt risk it either -

Saw a few cyclists on way in , they were all over the shop...way too dangerous

Today should be end of it according to this and its very accurate

Joe bastardi says very windy. Winds from the SW at 51 km/h.

Rolled all the way in this morning! :) Was fun but scary at times I was going so fast.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭sportbilly2008

gonna head out in about 30 mins , never mind the wind, gone very cold in the midwest this morning

Fair Play to Ray D'arcy just a minute ago: "Careful if you are on a bike, and drivers, watch out for cyclists."

Not a hope I'd go out in that. The N2 is too open and with me being fairly light I'd be blown all over the place, personally I don't think it's worth the risk.

Surely you can't get added to the wimp list for that

I won't add yo on the list, however, I will add the ones who did cycle to the 'Hero' list, as a compromise.

A hero list....I like the sound of that, doubt I'll ever make it though.

Phew, that was insanely windy. Coming over the Irishtown bridge I almost ended up in the water. Good fun though - makes things interesting on the fixie :)

    54km/h in donegal :D
(they were threatening storm force on last nights weather but that seems to have gone somewhere else)

seeing as we are talking about weather

It was quite a workout this morning. I've two hours scheduled for later. Should be fun.

Contemplated it on the cargobike with the kids. But, on reflection, attempting to cope with crosswinds when what you're cycling is basically a sail on wheels (because of the canopy) seemed less than wise.

I was heading North East so I was feeling very strong this morning.

I came as close to getting knocked down as I ever have because some fuckwit woman decided to throw open her door outside Donnybrook Fair. Was lucky I was a good bit out as she still managed to clip my foot.

I was out yesterday, quite hairy but interestingly everyone was being ultra cautious so no dramas. I did walk the bike across the bridge though, so minus points for that....

    YES!!

Knocklyon to Baggot street in about 19 seconds this morning. Got side swiped by mother nature on Terenure bridge, lack of concentration and sudden gust from the left nearly knocked me down when I was exposed to the dual carriageway.

According to Met Eireann, winds will die down late morning early afternoon, but the cycle home still wont be nice. Last night it felt like cycling through jelly.

I had that too, completely unpredictable swirly winds changing direction every few seconds, was pretty dangerous. Ended up taking the lane in some parts I wouldn't normally just to make sure I didn't get blown into traffic/kerbs.

Looking outside now, I thought it was actually snowing, but it turns out it's just the rain getting blown about so much (some of it is actually going up?) that it looks like snow.

I thought it felt slightly sleety on my cycle in.

Dropped the fixie for the mtb, wanted to have gears and brakes today. Wasn't too bad. Was someone beeping at me going through castleknock village ?

Cycled. No problem. Avoiding the open groundof the Phoenix pk and used the wall of Blackhorse Ave as a wind shield.
    Was fine.

My commute in was southwest ... so was never sure whether the wind was helping me or against me. There were times when I was caught in the cross wind and was leaning at a 30degree angle ... and then the wind would let go all of a sudden ...

The climb up from UCD to Sandyford was done at a couple of gears lower than usual.

Was one of the hardest commute ... including my 1st commute over 18 months back. Still knackered sitting at my desk and taking deep breath in every so often with everyone around looking at me strangely.

@Caroline ..... please please .. can I be on the hero list ...

Thought it sounded worse than it actually was, got to work on an aero standing position which was quite effective, standing in the drops with chest pressed against the stem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

Can I be in the hero gang? Cycled 20km SW, one section I had to take to the footpad to avoid the possibility of being blowing into cars, on Naas road beside the Luas tracks.

Took the train. Warm, comfy, 3G.

Cycling would have risked failing to meet my top winter training priority, which is not to die.

Stick me on the wimp list. Oh wait, I'm there already.

surprisingly calm along the canal. a bit swirly up the N11 and some crazy cross winds at junctions but not too bad overall.

Yep, cycled in today :) The wind along the canal was a bit mental, only got caught off guard twice though and at that remained fairly steady. I was shocked at how strong it was though

74.9km/h on the cycle path out to Howth.

I could barely reach 25km/h going the opposite way.

Decided to use today as a benchmark for "Is it too windy to cycle into work?" Turns out the answer was Yes, Probably.

It was fun though apart from the driver who cut me up on purpose while I was filtering and stood on the horn screaming obscenities at me. Fuk that, I was off the bike and giving it back to him in socks.

Anyways I was real pumped when I got back in the saddle and I fought a savage head wind all the way in. Feel class now. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,901 ✭✭✭lukester

Was less windy than it sounded from under the duvet.

lol @ blorg, I adopted a similar position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

I was cycling behind a guy on clanbrassil street this morning and as we came up to the South Circular Road junction he nearly got blow off his bike by the sidewind. He looked pretty shocked and just got off and started walking is bike to work down the road.

I thought I heard sirens. I can confirm that the wind at the foot of the wicklow mountains is indeed biblical. I wouldn't be cycling anywhere today, which is convenient as I have nowhere to be.

Remember same time last year we had ice. I prefer wind to ice anyday.

    +1
I fell off on the ice last year. No real damage done, but I can only blame myself as it is stupid to try to cycle on icy roads.

Clontarf to city this morning. The wind on the coast was the worst I've ever been out in and I had to carry my laptop today. Came within inches of a tree trunk at the 5 lamps

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Harrybelafonte

Sitting on bus on way in it didn't seem so bad, but I had too many close calls over the last few days, my bag is huge and acts like a sail and it was thoughts of the same in the dark tonight that really put me off. My 5 year old was nearly lifted off his feet walking through Albert College on way to school. He couldn't stop laughing :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,860 ✭✭✭TinyExplosions

Didn't bother taking the H+sons off... does that make me an eejit, or a double hero... couple 'interesting' moments, but not too bad really... though deep section rims really aren't a good idea in this weather :)

Didn't come close to falling off but a few gusts did make me move my footing further out when waiting at the lights. Flew in though, probably a record for getting into work.

The way home should indeed be interesting. Last night was pretty nasty though, so I'd imagine tonight couldn't be much worse, could it?
