I lost over three stone with a good low carb diet. I'd spent years eating according to the food pyramid, and while I was fit and healthy, I never seemed able to shift the fat. Then, almost as a joke, I started an Atkins-type diet and was amazed at how easily I lost weight, and how it stayed off.

In retrospect, I suspect I was probably heading for type two diabetes with all the carbs I had been eating.

For the record, low carb does NOT mean no fruit or vegetables. In fact, if you don't like green veg, I'd suggest you don't even think about it, because on a good low carb diet, you'll be eating more broccoli than you ever ate in your life before.

    Cool!

But I always cycled, and I was always fit. I did the Maracycle twice weighing 17 stone!

Actually, it was sort of a health hazard. I was in a crash one day and got taken to hospital. They were so busy looking for the internal bleeding that they were convinced was causing my blood pressure of 100/60 that they totally missed the broken shoulder. They just didn't believe that anyone my size could have a resting pulse of under 50 unless there was something wrong.

personally lost almost 5 stone in approx 15 months by following roughly 2500cals per day, doing 5 hrs a week in the gym, 70 cardio and 30% weights and diet was 60% carbs and 20 protein and fat ..

I went from 13.5 stone to 10,5 and lost 7 - 8 inches of my waist in about 5 months

I followed the dietplan on neilmct.com & trained with weights & interval cardio.

I've gone from just under 15 stone in July 2008 to 10st 5lbs now, completed the Dublin Marathon last month in just under 4:25. Lost the weight through watching my diet and lots of running. I'm probably not as strict about diet as I could be, but my answer to overindulgence usually involves running more miles. I'm hoping to try and get down to 9.5 stone after Christmas - if I can lose that, it should knock a few minutes off my race times and take me down to a size 10 in clothes. :)

Theres nothing wrong with a treat every so often! a cheat day once a week where you eat double the carbs prevents your body from becoming used to the diet and stop losing fat!

i want to get under 10 per cent body fat, i enjoy going to the gym and don't find eating healthy much of a burden..so i wouldn't call it a strategy, that sounds too organised!:P i'm just going with the flow now really

I only recently posted two pics in my training journal. One is of me at my heaviest in May 2008 and the other is of me now in November 2009.

    May 2008 - 110kg's, 40 Inch Waistline and 20%+ bodyfat?
    November 2009 - 86kg's, 30.5 Inch Waistline and 9-10% bodyfat

Mind you, the weight gain at first was completely and conciously self inflicted. I was trying to bulk up for a bodybuilding show and looking back now i realise i may have went a bit too far with the calories and i cringe when i look back at the old photos (and a show i didn't even compete at in the end). Took me about 6-8 months to drop down to around 100kg's and knock about 5 inches off the waist. But lost the majority of the weight quite recently.I'm just as strong, if not stronger now than i was back when i was 52-55lbs heavier also.

If anyone is curious, i only do about 10 minutes Cardio every weight session (depending on the session). But its high intensity cardio, usually Tabata High Intensity Training or doing anerobic conditioning like Prowler work/Tyre Flipping/Sprinting. I do sometimes like to change the pace and might do 15-20 minutes normal HIIT cardio or skipping & boxing. Diet wise i eat high carbs and calories on training days and then reduce the amount on non-training days, basically carb cycling. All my carbs are 'clean' and complex carbs like Oatmeal, Granola, Rice Cakes etc. 4-5 meals a day spread over 4-5 hours (i dont do the 6 meals every 2.5 - 3 hours thing anymore). Alot of my fat intake is of poly and mono unsaturated sources but also have some saturates here and there

My training has completely changed from back then also. I used to do bodybuilding style 'split' training, training one or two bodyparts a day with high volume. Now i follow the Joe Defranco Westside for Skinny B@stards program, which is more a strength/conditioning style program. I'm also doing more gymnastic and bodyweight style strength training also.

To get the best results, i always emphasise the word 'intensity'. Train hard and as intense as you yourself can do and the results of your training and effort will be all the more effective and visible. Get a proper structured weights/strength program, do some cardio and eat as clean as you can and you will notice results in no time

15 months ago I was 20 stone and 2lbs. I decided it was time to change im now down to 16 7lbs(give or take 2 to 3 pounds each side) and been pretty much this weight for last 6 months. i would personally like loose another half stone maybe stone but I feel comfortable enough at this weight so not too bothered once I never see the dreaded 17stone plus again I be happy

Im 6ft 2ins so height helped me little. I basically started playing rugby and took up going gym least three times a week. But most important I cut out take aways, fizzy drinks and started cooking my own food. I also did bit of boxing classes which I taught helped and made my routine different when need be.

To be honest since I have lost the weight I know feel more at ease with myself I also feel more happy and dont seem to be in as many bad moods etc.

Also helped me in birds department:D

question about Westside for Skinny B@stards program

im trying to finish my abs, this looks like a nice finishing program, i'm trying to lose the last 2% bodyfat - should i continue dieting or eat ariound maintainance and let the exercise look after the last bit of fat. Im just curious what kind of gains i would have on a program like that, on a calorie defecit - seen as you have done it before, you might be the right guy to ask...

As Conor likes to say " Westside = Bestside, yo! " :D

But thanks, trying to get back to up around 90kg's and staying as lean as i can. I miss the Sushi :(, i get cravings for it sometimes and head into Yammomori's or Sushi king for a quick fix :D

Iv dropped 3-4% bodyfat from not going deficit. I was eating around maintainence calories and doing my High Intensity Cardio after weights. So stick with your maintainence calories, do some HIIT cardio and see how you get on :). If nothing's shifting, reduce the calories a slight bit and see how that works

    One more question Michael.

Its 2 upperdays one lower and a day HIIT? Would just doing 3 sessions in the gym, with HIIT after be enough? not sure i have the time to do 2 extra hiit days

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 211 ✭✭imstrongerthanu

Question for you Micheal.Do you do any sports or is it all body building?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭hobochris

    Great thread.

I am just starting to work on my weight now.

I'm currently 17.5 stone, 6'1 with a BMI in the late 20's.I started rugby this week and plan to use the clubs gym on the other days.

My biggest problem is that my GF gets away with eating a lot of crap(and still stays skinny) so when she eats something I usually have some too. This is a habit I plan on breaking.

Its good to see so many people able to lose weight in a relatively short period of time (6 -18 months).

Thats the basic 2 upper, 1 lower template that Defranco offers. I do have more days, or 'modified' days as i call them. Usually a lower body dynamic day and then a day i do whatever i want which is usually Gymnastic/Bodyweight strength. It depends, you may do well with just the 3 days + HIT cardio after. I suggest just reducing carb/calories on your off days. Also you don't have to restrict yourself to doing HIIT in the gym. If im doing Tabata it only takes 6-8 minutes. So head outside and find a field, sprint as fast as you can for 20 seconds, jog for 10 seconds and repeat another 7 times.
Question for you Micheal.Do you do any sports or is it all body building?
I'm currently not doing any sports, although people have been saying to me i should seriously consider take one up. I enjoy weight training and have been doing so for 4-5 years (im 22 now). If i was to consider a sport it would maybe be a Martial Art or Track & Field.

    Excellent thread.

I've been on a 99% raw food diet the last four weeks (currently in my fourth). I've lost about 11 lbs but the most of that came off between the second and third week and noticed the weight loss slow down.

So last night I joined a running club and took to the roads in a bid to help lose that little bit more. Went from 13 st 3 lbs to 12 st 6 lbs so happy enough so far.

As for the raw food - it's easy enough. I'm a vegetarian anyhow so dont miss the meat but blending/juicing my dinners takes its toll. Surplus waste food left over really smells and bins need to be changed on a daily basis. But that's a minor inconvenience for a better, healthier body.

Im with you on that - i cycle my carbs in the same you do as it is. the tabatha sprinting sounds like an idea. Thanks

Lost 2.4 stone in about 4 months.

I put it down to halving the portions I eat and good cardio and weights.

I did could down the amount of alcahol but it was a guilty pleasure so if I thought I had put in a good week I would have a can or 2 in the house on a Sat nite.

Food wise my lunches, even though were mainly salads with tuna, chicken, ham were halved in size and I would split the lunch to 2 servings, 1 at about 1 O'clock and the rest at 4pm ish.

Dinners were also halved, so the full feeling was never an issue.
Also I could out eating after 9pm, but if I was training late I would have a small wrap with tuna or chicken.

Training wise I was playing Astro on Mondays and Wednesday. Circuits on Fridays and Saturdays. Tuesdays were weights. Sundays were a cycle and Thursdays were nites off.

COngrats to all who have lost weight, I really would advise against the fad diets though, been there with them and they had rapid weight loss, but it gradually came back again as you can't sustain them without some side affects or boredom.

Its pretty simple, down the food and up the training!! :)

Great to see so many success stories floating around and i think threads like this certainly helped me with motivation and advice to start a healthier lifestyle.I never called it a diet because i felt like a spa saying im on a diet to friends or family. I always just said im trying to eat and live healthier. My own story so far, started in may this year at 20st 7ibs, played a bit of football and that but crap diet and very little exercise left me at that weight. through healthy eating and training i weighed in this morning at 15st 10 ibs. Im still far from finished but my weight and bf is dropping steadily
bf last checked 2 weeks ago at 20.6. im 6ft 4 and lookin for bf of 12-15%

I used to be a demon for gettin a craving for a takeaway or maybe thinkin ah im not arsed going out for a jog or the gym, I used to combat this by thinking, how will i feel in an hours time depending on which one i do. if i get a chinese im gonna completely regret it and feel like crap in myself for failing but if i cook a nice piece of chicken and broccoli it will be well worth it. and its true an hour later you feel so satisfied!! same with going out training.

really its only 4 weeks or so at the start that you have to really try and motivate yourself because if you do it right for the 1st 4 weeks then you start to see results and personally this was the greatest motivation of all.
I used to buy a cheap t shirt a size too small for me and try it on every couple of weeks and that way you could really see your progress along the way.

best of luck on your change

Lost 2 stone in 4 months through exercising and healthy eating, fighting with an underactive thyroid so its quite an achievement. Stayed the same since then, 15 months ago and now want to get rid of the rest, just need the motivation and the Christmas period to be over!
