I've never ever cried while watching a movie, and while I have time I want to see if anything will get me ;)
So what's the saddest movie you've ever seen that brought tears to your eyes?

And was anyone else totally underwhelmed by Marley & Me and The Notebook???

Yep The Champ did it for me too. My ex blubbered during Highlander when Who Wants To Live Forever was played.

Up gave me a permanent lump in my throat but more for the uplifting moments then the 'sad' moments.

When i was in college, the class was invited to a private screening of Anthony Minghella's "The English Patient" with a Q&A afterward. It was early on a Wednesday morning when we got to see it.

There wasnt a dry eye walking out of it, particular after the death scene. There wasnt much banter among us after the screening.

Earthlings always gets me. With Mobys sombre soundtrack, and Joaquins deadpan narration over the absolutely horrendous cruelty to animals by humans. I'm a meat eater and pet owner, but I think everyone should be aware of the industries they might support.

We saw My sisters keeper there last week on a transatlantic. Oh my sweet lord literly the entire plane was sobbing & blubbering & sniffing. Never seen so many grown men fall to pieces . & then they started handing tissues out & then the men were even turning to the person across from them mid blubber talking bout how heart wrenching it was.

Im the official Ice queen but i sobbed @: this one..
& then the boyfriend doesnt call her & she thinks he used her but hes actually dead
... I bawled & bawled & my heart actually hurt.... Oh im going before I start sobbing again.

Seriously good movie - Jodi Picoult - excellent books in case you havent read her....

    Same here.
    Rest in peace noble soldier!

It's the music that gets to me. Similarly, there is a scene in The Land Before Time that turns me into a blubbery mess (excuse the poor video quality):

Once again, it's the music that really does it.

The Green Mile was the first film to make me cry! Now however I bawl at everything...

Love Actually has me in floods too - the bit
where Emma Thompson is crying in the bedroom after finding out her husband gave the necklace to that other one.
    Gets me everytime.

The ending of It's A Wonderful Life gets me every time. I thought it would get easier the more times I saw it but actually, it's worse because it just seems that much more poignant.

Also I think it should be a basic test of humanity to see if someone cries at Up. If they don't, then they're clearly a robot/brick wall/undead.

Unfortunately, I heard so much about how sad it was beforehand that I was left absolutely unaffected.

Years ago a movie called 'Mac and Me' made me cry.

It was about a disabled kid who befriends an alien that escapes from NASA and helps it get back to its parents.
the kid 'Died' but was brought back to life by the aliens parents.

I was only nine at the time

It made me cry too. At the sheer audacity of the ET rip off, and the fact that it was basically a 90 minutes long McDonald's ad.

The one film that gets me every single time is Watership Down. Everything else depends on my mood

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,439 ✭✭✭Skinfull

The only movie that has ever made me shed tears...and I didn't even realize they were falling till they hit my arm... was "Wit"
    Its a total killer.

As for UP I didnt find it sad in the slightest. What was so sad about it?
And please dont say the montage bit with the wife and her dying. Way too cliched and predictable to warrant tears.

I rarely cry at films but ET got me the first time and an old film called Phar Lap had me in floods of tears.

I remember all my friends bawling over Titanic and I just didn't feel upset at all.

When any of the girls were killed in Battle Royale I cried a small bit.

Also when Cameron might be drowning in Ferris Bueller I always well up....even if I'm just thinking about it.

A film that's not supposed to make you cry is "The Dream Team". Dunno why I watched it - probably Michael Keaton, but there is a scene with Christopher Lloyd's character that caught me out completely, as this is a comedy (though not very funny). Can't do spoiler thingee so you might have to watch it yourself, or not.

All Dogs go to Heaven...saw it when I was little but all I could remember was me sobbing so only watched it again a couple of months ago and held it together this time!!

Any animal movie gets me though!

I welled up a bit at the end of Pursuit of Happyness, in the part where
Will Smith gets the job at the end and he's trying to contain his emotion while thanking the managment guys, him walking along on the street trying not to explode with emotion as people are walking past is a fantastic performance from Smith

The montage in Up is very sad, it's my favourite movie of the year and has definitely cemented it's place in one of my favourite movies of all time.

Marley and Me had me welling up big time in the cinema, but it's because I have a golden labrador also called Marley who is 10 years old now, I have him since I was 14 (24 now.. duh) and I love him more than anything, so to think he hasn't much time left is really really hard to take. This movie basically shoved that in my face. Here he is, handsome bastard..

I could not believe that I would cry over an episode of 'Futurama', but this proved me wrong. And the music was so perfect too, Connie Francis's ''If It Takes Forever'' was so poignant and moving. Kudos to the 'Futurama' team. That was brilliant.

'The Green Mile' also made me cry a lot.
    'Bambi' always got me too.
When I first saw 'Titanic' at age 10, I cried towards the end.
    'Beaches' is another guaranteed tear-jerker
'Fluke' always got to me too
    'E.T.' always slayed me unbelievably

Ugh, I'm only gonna show myself up in this thread....I'm a total crier!

    As some have said before;

Up - The montage at the start :(
Love Actually - Emma Thompson, soooo sad :(
    Land Before Time -
    Littlefoot's mother dying
    The Notebook -
Towards the end when Allie loses her memory again and she's screaming for help and old Noah is bawling - I literally fall into floods of tears at that bit
    Marley & Me
    The Lion King
    Pursuit of Happyness -
where he gets the job is one moment but when he's in the toilets in the subway with the little fella asleep beside him on the floor and he's crying :(

    Other ones;

I got a bit choked up when
Ennis hears that Jack has died
    in Brokeback Mountain
    The Green Mile -
when that bast*rd squashes Mr Jingles and when poor John Coffey dies
    Legends of the Fall
    Steel Magnolia's -
Sally Field crying hysterically at Shelby's funeral
    Click -
surprisingly, wasn't expecting it, but when his dad dies
    Armageddon
Funeral scene of Four Weddings and a Funeral

And about a million more I'm sure. I don't cry everytime at all these movies but I've certainly shed a few for them.

Part of it was that you just weren't expecting it, and it really hit you unexpected.

A lot of films tend to make have me in tears at times. I love to see a film that can effect me so much. The Elephant Man always does it to me, can't help but let a few tears slip. Grave of the Fireflies as well effected me greatly, very few films are close to being as powerful as that.
