Hi lads i just got the pc version but finding the matchmaking nowhere near as fast as the 360 version.
My NAT is "strict" according to the game, i turned on UPnP in my netopia eircom broadband router as advised on infinityward.com/nat but im still seeing NAT "strict" ingame.
Am i missing something because as i say the matchmaking is very slow compared to 360 version.

I dunno, but I persume you will have to manually add\pinhole the ports. So do a search and find out what range MW2 uses

if its anything like the ps3, the best you'll get with he eircom netopia is NAT "Moderate" which I got down from "Strict", I had to make sure all psn/cod ports were correctly forwarded to ps3's ip, it was still on NAT3

i have since this week got a d-link, and have got NAT "Open" now in MW2 and nat2,
its the eircom router, you cant get NAT 2 with them, so best you'll get is Moderate, through PF all ports correctly, or pppoe the pc to get NAT1 which i wouldn't dream of on a pc !

Have you port forwarded and lowered your firewall setting to enable NAT?

Follow the 1st few parts of this guide and you'll sort it.

Edit:These ports open too. A few mates have done it and it worked fine.

    Connect to your router;
Open browser of choice and type your IP adderess with a 1 in the last place. (Generally 192.168.1.x)

Unless you've changed the password for the router it'll be the default (NetGear routers use User: admin Pass: password) The internet will provide you with answers.

Set UPnP (Universal Plug'n'Play) to on, this forwards your ports automaticly. Check the WAN options for NAT settings, set to open if there.

Ive done everything suggested here and still set to strict lol.
Strange that on the 360 its set to open.

Those netopia routers are horrible to work with. Go out and buy a decent netgear router, so much easier.

hey Cully, had the same prob, have since sorted it

    Try this

    Go to 192.168.1.254

    1. Expert Mode --> Configure --> Advanced --> NAT

    --Enable NAT (tick box)
--From the drop down selection choose 'Call of Duty'..which is 28960
--**also ppl from my clan said I'd to forward port 80, but there was no need in the end...maybe try that in addition if this doesnt work**--
--**also had no need to open any of those ports specified on steam.....easily done though by defining a custom service to forward if needed**--

    2. If its still 'STRICT'

    -- Basic Mode ---> Firewall --> Low/Off

By that stage it should now show as open

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,742 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Right ive no call of duty in my dropdown list but ive entered 28960 manually via custom.
Also my firewall has always been to low as xbox live needs it set to low.
Ill set to off to see if that hepls, is it safe to do so btw?

Just set to off and still showing strict ingame.

I used the guide on http://www.portforward.com and was able to improve it from "moderate" to "open".

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,742 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Yeah i done that lastnight also.
Its not a huge probem as i can still play the game its just matchmaking is slow compared to on the 360,thank all for input.

One of my friends had that problem even after opening the ports.. he rang eircom and they sorted it in like two seconds (once he got through)

    Question Cully .

Have you update the software on your router ??

Mine is currently at Current Software Version: 7.8.0r2

Also the COD port information when clicked on details shows as follows

    codports.png

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,742 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Ah that could be in mate, i have an older version, ill update asap

Right i tried to update and it simply refuses to to do so.
Ive tried manually update and auto update from the router page, talk about sucking.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,304 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

When your messing around with the ports, download and install http://portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm, and it will tell you if the ports are open without having to load the game every time.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,742 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Yeah ive tried that Kiith its saying ports not open despite forwarding what i need.
Anything else i can do to update router?
My brother got the game today and we cant even join a party , keeps failing to connect to eachother but im getting in to games no prob - games without the bro that is as we cant join a party together.

Damn eircom and netopia and their crappy router update that fails to update.

Ring them and tell them you want a new router !

I used to have the old one, then i rang and complained about speeds..and they sent me a new one

My NAT was STRICT, and I added port UDP 28960 to my router (Netopia) and now it's OPEN..

    HOW TO DO IT?

    1. Open a web browser..

    2. Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser..

    3. Click the Expert Mode link near the left of the page..

    4. Click the Yes, enter expert mode button near the center of the page..

    5. The menu on the left should change. In this new menu, click Configure..

    6. You should now see a new menu. In this new menu, click NAT..

    7. Click the Define Custom Service button near the center of the page..

    8. Put a dot into the Port Forwarding: Range of Ports radio button. Click the Next button..

    9. In Service Name type any name you want, like "Modern Warfare 2"

    10. In Global Port Range type: 28960 - 28960

    11. In Base Host Port type: 28960

    12. In Protocol put a dot into the UDP

    13. Click NEXT and DONE..

    14. Select the service you created from the Service Name drop down box. Click the Enable button..

And that is it! You are done!

Also remember to turn on UPnP..

    Tell us if it works..

CiorT thanks for that but ive done this already, im used to forwarding ports etc as i had to do the same for wow.

indough i have the Netopia 2247 NWG.
Im convinced my problem is fact it refuses to update.
As i say when i try to update router via router page in browser it fails all the time.
    Seriously annoying at this stage.

Just to add , when i check if ports are open with the PFPortChecker tool it says ports are not open or not reachable, the thing is ive opened them.

regardless of having your NAT set to open you're still going to have problems inviting people to your party...the whole IW app is a complete shambles and it;s touch and go whether you get to invite someone or now..
Mine is set to open (I used portfoward.com and steam for MW2 ports to open) and I still have this shíte to deal with..

ok are you updating from file on your hard drive? it should definitely work if you do that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭jonski

I feel a bit stupid asking this Dcully cause I have known you for a long time and know that you know your way around a pc but it has been bugging since I first read your post . You wouldn't have a software firewall blocking it by any chance ? it's just that you haven't mentioned it anywhere in posts .

Other than that .. anyone living near you that would give you a load of their modem for half an hour just to rule that out or prove that it is that .

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,304 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Is it possible your firewall is blocking the ports Dcully? And what service provider are you with?

Bah, beaten to it by jonski.

Yeah i tried updating that way, ie downloading the .bin file first.
This is the message i get "File update failed. Click here to go back to previous page."

    Kiith im with eircom.
Jonski and Kiith i disabled the firewall in AVG aswell as my windows one and even the one for the router.
Ive no other firewalls on the pc.

Okay. an easy way to get NAT1 wirelessly on eircom iss to use PPPoE IP settings on PS3. Password and username are always broadBand1 by default. Happy gaming :)

Dump those Netopia ****e routers and buy something like a Linksys or Netgear, so much better than anything ISP's hand out.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,742 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Aye im thinking along those lines now Fairy.

One thing that confuses me though is on both the xbox 360s in the house the NAT in MW2 is open [same router remember] which leads me to believe its something with the pc.
