Back to the reliable indigenous guest with the tragic story, who happens to fit the other criteria of selling a book as well.
Joining Ryan Tubridy on tonight's show will be Rose Callaly, the mother of murder victim Rachel O'Reilly.Mrs. Callaly was a previous guest of Pat Kenny's on the show and appeared alongside her son-in-law Joe O'Reilly, who was later convicted of his wife Rachel's murder.Rose Callaly's book about her daughter, 'Remembering Rachel', has just been published.

I wonder, in the history of chat shows or any media exposure, has there ever been an appearance by anyone who wasn't selling something?

Everyone has something to sell, be it a cause of their own or that of another. Seriously, it is an illusion to think these shows ever have a guest without something to sell. As much as it is an illusion to think any one of us is not partly responsible for the collective public's appetite for consuming anything & all there is being sold to us everyday!

Rose Callaly, I don't choose to see her cause as 'just' a tragic story. She has come to the public attention as a result of a tragic event in her life & that of her family. If viewed in a more open minded way, the fact is that she is a survivor of an unthinkable reality, this makes her story interesting & her record of it one of purpose & meaning. I'll be watching.

I would imagine Mrs Callaly would much rather she didn't have a book to sell.

Indigenous guests? This is the deliberate focus of the late late show team as far as I know.

What is it about home grown guests that a certain audience of the same 'indigenous' people, critics, deem as uninteresting or irrelevant?

What is it about a certain Irish audience that value international guests & names over our own? Could it be that we have "bought" into the hype of worldwide fame & power?

Do we have a need to identify with a 'more famous' & therefore seemingly powerful character?

Are we afraid of identifying with another, less important and less spellbinding character or fantasy, for fear of being labelled boring when it is us who slaps the label on in the first place?

How is somebody more famous with something to sell more acceptable than being 'sold' a story, a product or a fantasy by somebody who is an Irish guest on an Irish show?

Dont think so, he doesnt fit any of the criteria:
Standard Operating Procedure for Late Late Show researcher #445

Criteria for deciding on Late Late Show guest:

    i) Are they Irish with a degenerative disease.
ii) Are they flogging a book.
iii) Are they in the RTE canteen when our real guest cancels.

Yes but Brendan has lost some weight so they're not quite as big as previously.

Think Tubridy is handling the interveiw with Rachel O'Reilly's mother very well. Not interfering too much and letting guest tell her story.

Jeez, that Joe O'Reilly fella was one brazen man.........

The most shockingly inept interview Tubs has ever done. The audience are probably asleep.

i suppose :) its just surreal like. then again all the banks can take is everything you have, and then you run, run very fast

and we're left to shovel the s**t

It did not come across tonight but Mick Wallace is an amazing character. A builder with a social conscience. The land on the quays he was talking about is Smithfield. The Italian section between the quays and Jervis St is his work and inspired by his love of Italy. He sponsors Wexford United and donates a lot of money to various projects.
