And while people may be saying wohoo to a day off, just think of all the UCC students like grenache whos houses are getting flooded and their property damaged. Its a terrible situation, and ye all have my sympathy.

If it helps I'm not 'wohoo'ing any day off. I don't want the day off at all.

My sympathies grenache, saw your thread in AH and your posts in the Western Road flooded section.

Yup, nothing happening today. There's going to be chaos around college for the next week, what with the strike possibly affecting things tuesday and all the affected lectures/labs and whatnot from the floods... will be a bizarre week.

Lectures at University College Cork will be postponed from Monday 23 November until 30 November 23rd 2009 due to flood damage in a number of key buildings

    Courtesy of RTE website

I don't know how true it is though, I didn't get any email about it, and there's nothing on the UCC website.

Its true, in the SU office now and its confirmed, and college are currently drafting an email to all students.

Just had a text from UCC informing about the closure until November 30th. Fairplay to how organised they appear to be, they obviously had a contingency plan in the case of something like this flooding happening.

I would have been busy writing essays that week anyway. Hopefully, all my essays will get pushed back a week, which will be fantastic.

I would have been busy making some badly needed cash. But sure, how bad?! I'm heading to Limerick for a night out this week. Living the dream this week!

That lovely building. Such a shame. I heard it's going to take three months to fix it up. I don't know how true that is though, I haven't heard any official sources mention a timescale. I'd say there's a lot of damage done though, the computers on the ground floor are practically on the floor.

^nice pic. Heard the servers are all as good as gone in the WGB. Bad times like.
All project deadlines put back to the 27th. Which is great, only I have a project which is already due the 27th. This extension is completely useless to me.

Yeah but you have a week off college to do it now like.

I'd like to congratulate the SU in the job they've done. I know its not over yet but they have been up all night (literally) looking after students who were flooded and sorting out accomodation for them. Fair play to all the people involved.

the servers are on the 2nd floor, so they should be physically ok.
the power for the building comes in through the basement, which is not ok.

the lab machines on the ground floor ? I don't know.

if the ground floor was totally flooded, and it looks like it was, they'll have to gut the floor and re-fit it.

this is terrible. i wonder how the lecture theatres which step down are doing? (G.05 comes to mind)

The damage caused to the whole building must be emmense.

there was a horrible eerie vibe around UCC and the surrounding area in general today... it was awful. i really hope that this damage can be repaired soon, and that student can move back into apartments soon so we can have some sort of normality back.

I just heard that there was 3 inches of water through the ground floor, and the lab machines are 5 inches off the floor, so maybe they'll survive, depending how the rest of the weekend goes.
I imagine that huge lecture theatre on the ground floor of the WGB (is that G.05?) is a lake.

Heard that the basement and ground floor will have to be completely rewired.

Judging by the photo above, I'd say there was more than three inches TBH!

Its gonna be some clean up operation, and will take the week. Mardyke is ruined, gonna be closed for a month. Hall will be longer

Yeah, there are some photos here. Talking to a guy I know who works there, says the place is destroyed - furniture was floating around the reception, the floor of the hall is ruined, could take a couple of months to fix (was floating as well!). It'll be closed for about a month, floodwater was up to the fifth step of the stairs at the height of the flood, some staff got trapped in there last night!

I knew there was water in there but didn't think It would take a month to sort it! :(

That's a month off our "free" subscription...

I'm presuming there was a lot of damage to the biometric system, it takes quite a while to empty the pool, clean the whole place down, because there will be sludge and slime left in there and get new equipment in if it was damaged. I'd safely bet there was a lot of tile damage as well that could take a while to fix.

They won't be able to get in there till about next week, what with there being more floods to come, and it was still under a couple of feet of water despite the tide being out as well. It was definately one of the worst hit areas

Our Judo clubs equipment is most likely ruined too as it was in the main hall :( God knows if the insurance will cover any damage or replacements.

I was just thinking that about the gear. There is a load of equipment in the main press in hall 3 - probably depends on the insurance that the Mardyke has TBH! I'm wondering if they got any of the gym equipment upstairs before the flood, since there were staff trapped inside, maybe that was what they were trying to do.

Aye, was thinking that myself. We have quite a lot of mats and they aren't cheap =\ So hopefully most of them will be ok. Not the most pressing of matters I know in light of everything else of course but I hope we'll be able to get the club going again.

Dude, you've known me for what, 7/ 8 years? Do you honestly think that will make any difference? Hear the SU have been workin hard alright. Fair play to 'em indeed.
Was down by the Mardyke this morning. Not at all surprised the gym's in bits. Whats the deal with the astro pitch? If that and the hall have to be re-done, it's gonna be ridiculously expensive.
