Are you referring to a particular area?
    City and surrounding areas

For info see the stickied thread in Galway City for up to the minute updates by boards posters. For journeys to Dublin also see this one.

    www.aaroadwatch.ie updates quite often.

See latest flood maps here http://www.galway.ie/en/Services/PublicNotices/FloodingAdvisoryNotice/

Appeal not to travel unless it's an emergency and more info http://www.galway.ie/en/media/Flooding%20Advisory%20Notice.pdf

Does anyone know how bad the back roads from Athenry to Ballinalsoe are? Are they passable with a jeep? I need to get to Dublin tomorrow. How bad is Craughwell?

I just read on the commuting an transport thread that Craughwell N6 is closed and bus and rail links cancelled. I've just passed through B'sloe (bout 25 mins ago) and flooding v serious there. The Bunowen River (on the back road from Athenry to B'sloe) burst its banks last night-the Station Road was partially closed but I don't know how it was today.

Craughwell is jammed. Badly flooded but one way traffic being allowed at owners risk! Couple of locals helping out at the flood but it is bad. Traffic backed up for miles in both directions! Tried getting in from Ardrahan and road is flooded at railway bridge beside post office. Was half way up the spare tyre on the back of a jeep stuck in it. Eventually wormed around back roads. Maybe athenry road is the best bet.

    Hi All.
Husband just got back from Loughrea.
He left at 3pm and we live in Galway city. Its now 21:45!!!
Road blocked in Craughwell. They don't know what condition bridge will be in even if it subsides. It was shoulder high at 6pm.
He went Loughrea to Gort. and Gort to Galway. Lots of floods and traffic slow but moving none the less. Call the local Garda stations if your not sure. Some water will drain from fields tonight but the army is in so they might be able to do something. Busses not running as far as I know tomorrow morning.
Needless to say he's not going to work in the morning.

Hey guys, planning on leaving Dublin tonight to get home. Anyone know how Athlone-Bog Road-Tuam is coping with all of this?

Or should I consider a flight?!!

    Thanks.

Bog road from Athlone to Tuam is okay apparently, except for a citylink bus which has broken down part wayone of my colleagues came that way this morning. With any luck that'll be cleared soon.
There's a good flood after Barnaderg, just before the grange bridge to contend with, but is passable. Northwards from Tuam upto Claremorris and then into Castlebar is clear.

All those roads are closed Go to Doughiska. Wait for emergency service vehicle to enter Motorway and follow it carefully with hazards on ( do not overtake ) .

Heard parts of the Galway - Ballinasloe motorway have been opened to limited traffic including emergency services.

Anyone know if this is wishful thinking and if its open how do you become limited traffic :D

Will be opening one lane with a 50mph limit between droghishka and ballinsloe.
They are just running the road to clear it of debris etc. Should be open by clocking off time

posted this info in the city thread too -

According to GBFM there is a 10 mile tailback into Gort. Labane is flooded. Crowe St. in Gort is flooded. Local diversions in place.

For the moment N6 is not officially open. They are working to get construction traffic and machinery off road. Some people are using the road but it is not formally open. Accident waiting to happen until road is cleared.

N6 will open later in the day.

Apparently there are already some people queuing at Galway Clinic to get on N6 - GBFM have said the road will not open til 3 or 4 pm today at the earliest.

Apparently it is the actions of people like this that are delaying or postponing the opening of the road...

Opening delayed until 5 or 6pm

    Latest from AA Roadwatch:

*GALWAY* • Galway County Council have confirmed that 26km's of the M6 Dublin/Galway Rd (under construction) will open temporarily later today, to bypass the flooding at Ballinasloe, Loughrea and Craughwell. Single Lane Traffic will be in operation and a strict speed limit of 50km per hr will apply. No time has been confirmed. • The N6 Galway/Dublin Rd remains closed at Ballinasloe & Craughwell. • The Galway/Monivea Rd (R339) is blocked at several spots between Carnmore Cross and Monivea. • N17 Galway/Tuam Rd is blocked at Tuam, Claregalway and Loughgeorge. • Most routes around Corofin are impassable as the River Corrib burst its banks. • The Loughrea/Athenry Rd (R349) is impassable.
    • Travelling to Connemara from the east divert via Westport. Bus Eireann and Irish Rail services have been cancelled.

Tuam to Athlone via Mountbellew might be your best bet.

Looks like the M6 will be open for Galway to Loughrea and Ballinasloe bypass but you still have to get into Galway.

I would go via Tuam unless someone else reports flooding.

    From AA Roadwatch

    Updated: 20/11/2009 19:31:42

WARNING! HIGH TIDE IN THE WEST IS AT 9PM. WATER LEVELS WILL RISE AGAIN FROM 7:30PM. For more information on all areas click on Live Traffic map. *GALWAY* • Drivers on the N6 Dublin/ Galway Rd can now go on the N6 from Dublin to Balinasloe and then use the as yet unfinished M6 Balinasloe Bypass as far as Loughrea. • From there you must still divert to Gort or Athenry as there is still no route to pass Craughwell. The as yet unfinished M6 may also open at Craughwell by 9pm approx. Single Lane Traffic is in operation and a strict speed limit of 50km per hr will apply. • The Galway/ Monivea Rd (R339) is closed and all traffic is diverting at Carnmore Cross over to the N17 Galway/ Tuam Rd at Claregalway which is taking 3hours. • Leaving Galway directly on the N17 Tuam Rd there is a two hour delay due to flooding at Two Mile Ditch and Claregalway. • The N18 Galway/ Ennis delayed by 30 mins, between Oranmore and Gort. At Gort there is a diversion due to flooding at Crowe St.

Ballinasloe not looking well at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Tiramisu

Thanks for that, the information is all a bit vague, can't get any definite info on whether it's passable or not. Anyone travelled that way this evening?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31 PJaysus

I haven't gone that way, but when I had to go home on Friday, I rang 11850, and found out the phone numbers of a petrol station on my way home, which was Dublin Road. Because they were beside the road, and were watching the chaos all day, they were able to tell me which roads were bad / closed etc.
    Its worth a try.

Some other posts here say that its passable now. But flood water is not good for a car as I found out, so you have to ask yourself is it really worth the hassle. Do you absolutly have to make the trip? If the answer is no, then I would stay put. But its your call.

is it possible to get into balinasloe town from galway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Tiramisu

Yeah, I came into it earlier at the new roundabout where you take first exit for the town and second exit for Portumna, there was a sign saying road closed but nobody around it, you can drive down no problem, you just can't get out the other side of town.

Drove from dublin to Tuam this eve. After looking at Ballyforan for ages decided my car didn't like the look of it. About a foot high with good flow across it. Plenty of others chanced it and got across ok.

I went back for the detour via Dysart towards Ballygar and the N63. All were passable after that. (100-200m)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 177 ✭✭paulhannon

did you take the regular route from galway to b'sloe or is there diversions?

i've to work out there tomorrow night, but wouldn't mind the night off too!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Acoshla

I came through Gort and Loughrea along the diversion, dunno what its like now with the motorway open, hopefully quicker than my 3.5 hours to get there.

Does anybody know what the N17 is like today? I have to get from Moycullen to a gig in Tuam this evening but I don't want to get stranded with a van full of gear. Thanks, AA roadwatch seems to be overloaded, can't access it at all.
