Just wondering RSU in the DMR should it be in the DMR after the remainder of the country is set up or is it needed there?

Should there be RSU in the DMT 28 votes

Voted yes as it would be good to see an overt armed presence on the streets but I can't see it happening anytime soon as without going into detail we seem to be well covered in the city.

agree with this.... the country has gone to the stage where a visible armed presence is required...maybe in dublin more then anywhere else

It, wouldn't do any harm, its always good to have an extra advanced driver on patrol to assist I should think.

There not advanced drivers. RSU will come into dmr eventually to bring us more in line with best practice with regards to firearms officers.

They dont do advanced course, they do a different driving course, that is unless a member completed advanced driving course before they joined rsu. I had a long reply posted regarding the driver training they recieve, but i am editing it now due to the fact that info on rsu training is not in public domain. On a side note there are members in units more elite than rsu that still havent got advanced course done

    More elite eh!

Im sure you know the units im on about, those units are still waiting to get drivers on advanced driving courses. Just the way things are at the moment i suppose, no money for training etc. Anyway back on topic, i voted yes, i think rsu would be a great addition and would be very busy in the dmr

djtech.... its my understanding that they are required to have the basic level car course done on applying for this role as a pre-req along with other courses, they then obviously learn more and build on those skills... i messaged you there. I can understand lads that have just joined units that are waiting to be trained up and there is a back log/bottle neck due to funding or whatever. With those jobs, there is always new things to learn and i'm sure they are busy training in other areas if there aren't courses at the moment - as the old saying goes training is never over.

Wonder where the rsu would be based if they were in dublin??? One of the new stations? Ballymun, finglas, clondalkin. Dont think there would be much room/accomodation for them in the older stations

The Depot. seems like an ideal place handy for access to M50 or access to city centre, if it was a single unit. Ideally it would be at least one car in each division or else have them based in the one location but patrolling their respective divisions/

It would be my understanding that when the entire county has the basic package then DMR will have it. Now that is speculation not fact. I feel it would be of great benefit. A dedicated armed response. At present we really don't we have excellent units dedicated to specific areas but the benefit of having RSU would be great

Id say it would be like the rest of the rsu's. One unit patrols north of the city and one unit patrols south of the city every tour, thats oviously when there not doing searches, checkpoints etc

I think that within the next few years we will be far more in line with the uk style of policing and PSNI style (best pratice etc).
ERU will be the main intervention unit, but then every region will have its armed response unit that will respond to armed calls and contain incident until eru arrive to do intervention.
I can see detective units being phased out as armed units and being purely investigation units.

I said yes. It must be a pain in the a** for detectives to be called out to provide armed support when they are investigating a case etc. If there was a dedicated RSU then they would be able to respond to Armed incidents and the detectives can stay detecting.

Also, it would do no harm to have an armed presence on the streets.

Thats one thing that really gauls me about the job - detectives being taken away from investigative duties to do an armed post or call etc... rsu type units should have been in place long ago.
A friend of mine in the UK (armed polis) said the only negative thing about rsu/arv type units is that there is a higher risk of them shooting an someone by accident is quite high, sadly, it has and does happen. But hey, i voted yes in favor as i believe its a massive deterant to organised crime and a great assistance for the regular/unarmed members

Its a great idea to have RSU on the dublin streets a visual deterrent is the first advantage the knowledge they are there is also another then keeping detectives detecting is a great one bridging the gap between regular mules and eru for response but more than all of those aremd response to help regular mules thats immediately available and dedicated to dublin is great. IT WILL COME i reckon about november next year and there will be north and south units is one option i've heard the other is the depot for obvious geographical reasons it almost sits on the liffey so the units arent too far in one direction and its easy to get to all major routes from here. but no matter where they are based it will only be a place to store gear and park cars they'll parade in stations where the work is going to be and once supers understand the value of using them for searches and checkpoints etc so that they cna kep their own armed members investigating they'll be used alot

I can see it happening where a lot of gun cards will be taken back from members i.e ddu, ctf etc and rsu will be the people that will do the armed searches etc.

As far as i know drug units and units like that in uk arent armed, but i could be wrong on that one.
