Am I on the right track

    Hi,

I am 5'10 in height and weigh 11 and a half stone. I am a size 12 and I am not overweight but I don't like my shape. I have long skinny legs (prob the best part of me) but when I put on weight it generally goes straight to my tummy and arms. I recently decided to take up the gym, where I do 20mins on treadmill...first 5 mins warming up, then a steady run for 15mins. I do 10 mins on rowing machine, 10 mins on cross trainer, 200 sit-ups and finish with stretching. I drink a 2litre bottle of water everyday and my diet is fairly healthy...sometimes the odd breakout happens but generally when I am going to the gym during the week I make sure to drink loads of water and eat healthily. I go to the gym between 4 and 5 times a week for an hour but I haven't lost any weight and seem to be getting heavier on the scales. What am I doing wrong? Also is there a possibility that because I drink so much water that if I lose weight it will only be water weight? I really want to lose the weight I am carrying around my waist and also tone up. Could someone steer me in the right direction as regards a fitness routine and also some nutritional advice.

    Thanks

    You should post your diet.

Also there is loads of good info in the sticky thread on Fitness basics.

you need a decent weights program and stop doing so much cardio - its not going to get you to where you want to be.

Doing 100 reps of sit ups is not going to help also - use a decent core/stomach program.

    Post up diet also

op, you mentioned that you "recently" started going to the gym? are we talking last week, last month etc? It normally takes a little time to see results .. as mentioned, post your diet .. get a good weights program, but keep the cardio up also, as long as you like it and have the time to devote to the gym ..

Ok thanks for advice so far,

Breakfast: Usually whole grain cereal and low fat milk. 2 slices of brown bread toast with real butter (I absolutely hate low fat spreads).
Tea with low fat milk. No sugar.

    Snacks: 2 apples, hazelnut yoghurt.

Lunch: Brown Bread sandwich (lean meat or tuna, lettuce, tomato, cheese (I know its bad!), onion. Mandarin orange. Tea with low fat milk.

Dinner: Generally grilled chicken or salmon and either stir fry veg or salad with sweet chilli sauce. I'm not a big fan of potatos but I LOVE bread and it's my biggest downfall.

I don't have a problem staying away from chocolate, crisps and junk food in general and I rarely eat them.

I started the gym when I went back to college mid september. I am fairly dedicated to it and do 4-5 days a week of it. When I went back to college I weighed 11 stone so I am heavier now despite my efforts. I really don't know much about weight training or what equipment to use and if my diet is a problem as well. Any guidance?
