Done it last year. Great race. Really enjoyed it. For 12 euro u get a wolly hat thats worth the entry fee alone along with plenty of grub after. Parking was free in the multi storey car park 100 metres from the centre.
All in all its my first race of 2010. Dungarvan 10 had a stand there so i even got to sign up for the Dungarvan 10 when in mallow.

Whats the course profile like ? Is it a course for a PB ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,656 ✭✭✭village runner

Uphill first mile and downhill 3rd one i think. Yes its a pb one. Lose a few seconds on the first mile though as its a long drag. You will make it up on hte 3rd mile.
Will be doing it again nxt year for sure.
    Fairly flat apart from that.

there is going to be a slight change in the course for next year and thats not finalised yet.won't be that radical a change.

Considering that this year they had a record crowd of 576, that number should not be too much of a limiter.

From my experience in January I can highly recommend this race, despite the cold rain we had that day. It's definitely a fast course. The time I set there is not only my PB for 10 miles, it's also my best score for any race ever according to the various running calculators out there.

think the 1000 entries stem from the fact of thats how many hats were ordered for this year.

I'm entered. Looking forward to it.

just a quick word to let people know that they can enter for the dungarvan 10 on the day of the mallow race in the youth centre.
also would like to get as many people as possible pre-entered for the mallow race beforehand,it costs nothing to pre-enter so you won't lose out if not participating.

I personally think its the worst idea ever. Allowing people to pre enter that doesnt cost them a thing. For example i know people that entered that wont be doing it. Just a small chance they will i was told. This will distort figures(for hats etc)for hte race and i dont see any point in it.
What info will it give the club ? Not much i doubt. I will be there if not sick/injured.
    Rant over

The fee is cheap any so if one could enter on the cheap they could pay for it

they just want to do it this way rather than set up a system where people enter through a third party method and have to pay them for it,and so they can keep the cost down.the club will be making no money from the race and are happy to do it this way.who am i to argue.

indeed, it was a great race last year despite the weather! long term forecast for next sunday is:
"Snow. Gentle breeze, 5 m/s from northeast, 0degrees"

get the hats out people!! :D:D

They will supply the hats at least. I am training this week as if there is no race on. It would be a shame. The following week would be onlt 2 weeks from dungarvan.

I received this in an email this morning:

Mallow blanketed in snow this morning, conditions not due to improve for rest of week. Spoke to the Mallow guys last night, 50:50 at moment for Sunday. Decision being made on Saturday at 1pm following route inspection. If they have to cancel, an e-mail will be sent to all registered runners and John Desmond will be contacted.

It's not looking good, is it? :(

we're still optimistic that this will go ahead,a few members ran the course last weekend and said it was fine.i'll post here as soon as the decision is made on saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭colblimp

Received this email last night from the organisers:

Thanks for all of your entries so far.

We will continue to accept entries until Friday at midnight, so please let your running colleagues know.

With regards to the weather the course is currently raceable and if things don't deteriorate too much we are hopeful the race will go on as planned.

We will have a course inspection on Saturday morning and make a final decision then as to whether the race will go ahead. This will be posted on the website at 13:00 Saturday and I will email all entrants at this stage.

See you all on Sunday (hopefully)

    Regards,

    Denis Sheehan

    Mallow Athletic Club

Hopefully the race will go ahead but the weather forecast isn't too good, is it? :(

Although I was sort of expecting the race to be cancelled, it's still really, really disappointing. I'm gutted! :(

Unfortunately we have had to cancel Sunday's race. We ran the course today and while most (95%) of the road is dry, there are a few patches of ice which hadn't cleared by late afternoon today. We could not be certain of the safety of all runners
Based on the forecast it is unlikely that things would have got better before Sunday. We were keen to avoid the situation of four years ago where the race was cancelled on the start-line due to safety concerns
We were also concerned about the athletes who would have had to travel long distances and the safety of the road network throughout the country.
We are looking at possible dates to restage the race and will be in touch.
Thank you for your entries. We had as many online entries this year as we had runners last year.
Sorry for the sudden change of heart.
    Regards
    Denis Sheehan

They will find it hard to fit this in now.
another 10 days of this cold snap to come, the Dungarvan race will barely be on i'd say.
After that there are 3 races in 3 weeks from Feb 13th.

What happens about getting the entry fee refunded if the Dungarvan race is cancelled, anyone know?

That means the County Board will have to move the County Roads Champs scheduled for that day - cock! March 17th is the proposed new date, oh well...

    Best of luck with it....

reckon we could be down a lot on numbers for this race.still we're happy to be able to get the chance to run it at all considering how packed the race calendar is.

I think you are right re numbers.
I have a full car thank god. For €12 that includes a wolly hat and great grub you have to support even if i cant race it. Get around will do me.
Ok caleder didnt suit but a 10 miler the week after another 10 miler will never get a big crowd.

I'm heading down from limerick and really looking forward to it.
Just a couple of novice q's, how much of a warmup and at what pace should one do for a 10 miler? Also, i have pre-registered so what would be a good time to arrive to collect my number?
    Thanks.

    Thanks.

Arrive at 11.30. Give yourself plenty of time.
Warm up of 1 mile at easy pace with 4-5 spurts of 60 yds at race pace.
Pace you should run at would depend on your speed, training ??
    For example a 3.45 marathoner 77 min, 3.30 marathoner 72 minutes

Enjoy the first 5 miles and decide if you can push on.
