puppies are not just for christmas. Knowing this all good reputable breeder won't have any puppies before are around christmas to stop stupid people from ruining little puppy lives.

    I hope it isn't as a gift.:(

yes I do know that, we have had german shephards for years and one just died on us and I'm looking to replace it.

Why a white one? you DO know that the whites are considered to be of lesser intelligence/value than the standard Shepherds? If you do find a white male, make sure you only pay half price, :D:D:D Much better off with the real deal. I've a (REAL) one and she's incredible.

That fine, sorry just had to put it out there. Still doubt you'll get one from a good breeder they tend to have pups more around new year. Also xmas isn't the best time for a pup to be intoduced to his family. There is to much going on and puppies need a set routine to help them settle.

Don't agree with gypsygirl, saw a white one for the first time a few days ago, it was beautiful. Far nicer than the so called 'real' one. I'd go for the spurious one too!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 172 ✭✭dontcallmecrazy

yeah they are gorgeous, we have a black and tan one who we love to bits, and our white one just died a few weeks ago never had any problems with it and was just as easy to train as the B&T.

Its just the two of us so christmas is never that hectic tbh, the dogs are the kids in the house!!

we have been to see a few good quality litters in the last few weeks but all female left, the dogs just get snapped up the minute they are born almost!!

Sorry, but I think thats nonsense. Just because a white GSD doesn't fit the breed standard, and so can't be shown at any IKC shows, does not mean that they are of lesser intelligence or value. Most people own dogs as pets, not as show dogs, and value their dogs no matter what colour they are. White GSDs are just as REAL as black and tans. I was told yesterday that long haired GSDs are also not acceptable in the show ring (don't know if thats true), but I have known a lot of them during my lifetime and they are lovely dogs, and very definitely real GSDs.

I have no problem with showing dogs before anyone thinks that, I have a lot of friends who show their dogs and often go to shows to socialise with them.

I agree, absolute nonsense. I have a white GSD and beleive me she is VERY REAL and VERY INTELLIGENT. She is complimented all the time on how she looks and her temperment and manners.

    What incredible snobbery! :(

OP Good luck in your search.

Is this a joke? as i dont think someone could be serious with a comment like that.

I have a bi-colour GSD mostly black saddle with tan legs and belly, I also know a few people with White Sheps, lovely lovely, wolfy looking dogs and I have never before heard that they are less intelligent. In the practical sense I wouldn't havew thought so at all.

From where do you base this fact/theory/opinion?

OP - As per the last few posts, so sorry for the loss of your shepherd but maybe leave looking to replace him/her until after Christmas as most reputable breeders won't sell puppies at Christmas for obvious reasons, best of luck finding your new pupster :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 172 ✭✭dontcallmecrazy

yeah I can understand the not selling before/around christmas theroy alright as most of them probably end up in the pound etc a few months later!

I just would have loved to be able to get one for himself as a surprise as he is heartbroken over the death of the other one, I dont mind if its ready to go now I'd still take it, its not specifically as a christmas gift per say.

I dont understand the bashing of the white ones, how on earth could they be of lesser intelligence at all, certainly not true in my experience. very loving and docile yet can still be a guard dog when they need to be, that in my opinion is a smart dog!!

OP if you take a look here there are some beautiful GSD's in need of a good home, http://www.irishanimals.ie/gsdall_homes.html no white ones at the moment, but that's not to say there won't be if you keep an eye on it - Riddick looks like a superstar!

What a load of nonsense! Albinism or partial albinism is a fault in the show ring but not in life, and colour does not make a dog more REAL than another - rediculous! I hope, for your sake, this is a joke.

OP - I agree with waiting until after Christmas. Good breeders will not sell pups in the weeks coming up to Christmas and New Year, you are more likely to find what you are looking for (from a decent breeder) in the new year. So sorry to hear about the death of you pet. Maybe have a look on some charity websites for GSDs, there can be some stunners! Good luck :)

There was a girl in my training class last week with a White German Shephard, if she is there next week I will ask her for the breeders details.
There is absolutely no difference between a White German Shephard, a Black German Shephard, or a Black and Tan German Shephard, just coat colour. White German Shephards are not albino's nor inferior in anyway neither mentally or physically. The only reason I know for them not to being allowed in shows is as a 'shephard' the White German Shephard is hard to see on snow covered hillsides therefore not considered suitable for herding which kennel clubs consider to be the original job of a German Shephard. But I'm assuming you've no intentions of herding sheep or cattle so there is no reason why they won't make a beautiful pet :)

A white German Shepherd is not an albino.

I know, but for all intents and purposes... it's a recessive gene, thus the reason quite a few "non-traditionally" white dogs (GSDs, Boxers etc.) can have birth markings and generally have brown eyes.

Ha - not fussy at all...

To be fair the person who's looking for the GS are right in listing all of that, because if you're looking for a pedigree and a clean bloodline and a non puppy farmer - most of that will be standard (being able to see papers/parents, being vacc'd/wormed/deflea'd/registered/chipped etc).
Donedeal isn't a bad place - you just have to be careful who you buy from. If you're vigilant and know the right criteria / things to check you should be ok.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 782 ✭✭✭Paul91

but the way i read it makes it sound like she wants the four colours from the same litter - not sure if she means any of those colours from one litter - but why would anyone want 4 male German Shepherd puppies at once?

Well it's their business why they want 4 pups really.
Could be they just lost some, or they want to show them or want to breed from one or two of them.

be a bit odd to loose 4 dogs in the one go - and would have thought that if you where going to show dogs you would concentrate on one or two as for breeding surely you'd be hard pressed to have four stud dogs on the go in the current economic climate, but your right, it's their business, i was more interested in them trying to get four colours from one litter :D

Fair play to them, 4 dogs is alot!! hope they find what they're looking for!

I saw those pics, gorgeous gorgeous pup!! Have three dogs already, if I had room (or indeed more hands to hold more leashes!!!) a White GS would be next on my list. Have my hands full with my 4 month old Rottie at the moment though! :D

Shes a handful!! :p She seems to think that playtime is this time every night! And only wants to play with the loudest toys! I'd have loads if I had the room myself. Sounds like you have your hands full!!!

I know what you mean! I am trying to type with one hand here and hold the toy with the other one while she practically swings out of it! Her teeth are driving her mad!

I got a cool toy for my pup when I was in America in September, don't know if they are available in Ireland. Its basically a cloth bone but its a special, heavy duty material that you soak with water and then freeze. Brook loved chewing on it when her teeth were at her.
As I type I have a Chihuahua under my elbow, a Japanese Spitz to my left and a Rottie to my right and that's just the canine members of our household!!!:D

Yeah I remember you mentioning this. I had a look in that Pet Warehouse in Naas at the weekend but didnt see it. I had used an old teething ring belonging to my niece which was working a treat until it burst. At the moment I am still putting it in the freezer and giving it to her at night. I seem to be getting a break here, at the moment she is engrossed in The Bone Collector on TV! I must keep up the search for that bone you mentioned!

I suppose if you froze a kong with water in it, it would do the same???

Yeah possibly. I will keep looking for the one you mentioned though because if I remember rightly its designed especially for when their teeth are acting up! Ah bliss. Shes spark out on the floor for now!! I have one, cant imagine what its like for you with four! Had a couple of bad nights with her howling too after five nights of silence

I just have the three but I noticed when I got Brook that there is four years between all of my dogs, who are 8 and half, 4 and a half and 4 months, I must get the puppy itch every four year ha ha!! Brook had one really bad night but wasn't too bad after that, she had the company of the other dogs so that helped her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 298 ✭✭Blogger50

Oops! Thought there was four! It was strange because Sun to Fri night not a bother and then sat and sun she howled like mad and you'd swear she was re-arranging the furniture. Then last night silence again! Saying a prayer for tonight! Maybe we disturbed her routine at the weekend :pac:

Just noticed we've kinda hijacked the thread! :D
