Quite liked it. Last 15 mins were particularly strong. Loved the "The laws of time are mine and they will obey me!" bit.

Wow! That was a bit 'deep' wasn't it ?

Not as scary as I had read that it would be but the last 15 minutes will require a little thinking about.

Nicely set up for the Xmas episode :)

    Deep and thoughtful

    Loved it.

Bit concerned by EVIL Dr at the end tho!

That was brilliant. And I loved "The laws of time are mine and they will obey me" swiftly followed by the laws of time letting him know who the real boss is. Bring on the master!

I have to disagree with you here in some sense.

While RTD has come under fire for turning the Doctor into a deity, which in some sense I would agree with, I think this was a real rebuttal to that!

This was screaming YOU ARE NOT A GOD!

As an above user put very aptly the laws of time showed him who's boss.
I thought it was really refreshing.

I'll put this bit in spoilers for those who haven't seen it's benefit!
Also, meant to say, one of Tennant's best performances. The glimpse of power mania was outstanding as was his reaction to Ood Sigma.
BTW, Ood Sigma, what a bloody legend!!!!! Looking forward to meeting that Ood with the mega brain!!!

Can't wait for the Master!! He does look like he needs an ASBO in the ad though!! Also what was the story with the flashing skull in his scenes?! Is this a Deadly Assasin type thing showing his lack of regenerations?? Who knows!! Can't wait to find out!

I've Confidential recorded. I'm going to spead out my new who joy by watching it tomorrow!

well to be quite honest, I posted that when I still had about 2 minutes left in the episode, before the "incident" at the end. :) So i'm a little bit happier, but still pretty let down by the episode and growing ever unimpressed with tennants doctorship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭doctorwhogirl

I loved him as the Doctor. Really did. But I am ready for fresh blood.
Think he did a great job with this, and with not a huge amount of his usual high energy speels to rely on!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,765 ✭✭✭Jessibelle

I thought it was an ok episode until the last 15 minutes. Then it kicked off, went into overdrive and now I have a wee digital clock on my desktop counting down the days to Christmas (I swear it's not for Santa sleeps ;) ). Was it just me or did the Power mad Dr scare anyone else? flashs of the way he was in 'The Runaway Bride?'. This incarnation in particular seems to have real difficulties with his nature, wonder if that'll have any signifigance on Eleven??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

i loved it - a bit annoyed at myself for watching the preview but still i cant wait for the next episode. I know when season 5 starts but has it been announced how many episodes will be in it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    mixed feelings about it.
I loved the notion of the Doctor refusing to help as the crisis got worse and worse and he simply stepped back and watched. But it wasnt particulary interesting scenario as it could have been with the water monsters. I thought they'd play up the drops of water etc a bit more then they did.

But the last 5 minutes. At first I was angry at how it was doing another fire of pompei by saving people even though they are meant to die. But when its turned on its head with the doctor going slightly power mad and the suicide. Epic stuff. Raises the question can the last 5 minutes save a mostly uninteresting episode. Though it seems to backpedal abit in the last seconds which is a shame. I was hoping his action here would lead straight into some reveal about the laws or something (images of time lords have been around for a while) putting him on the wrong side of next episode's events...

Still. Its good to get some form of doctor fix every now and then.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

To be honest, the first 45 minutes could have been a first series Torchwood episode and with those last ten minutes I would have still thought it was awesome.

I wonder if they are going for a
the universe fighting back against the Doctor by ending this regeneration before it goes truly power mad and ruins everything
    angle?

I wonder will the beeb get complaints about the
    suicide
    .

I think the suicide backtracked the power mad doctor because when sigma ood appeared he seemed to have reverted to his more *timid* self.

Love this episode. Have to say tho, did anyone else think
The suicide was a cop out? I mean, she was now found dead in her house on Earth by suicide, rather than heroically dying on Mars. And yet the future time line still remained the same. How did the suicide inspire her daughter to space travel? I would have liked to have seen the future of the human race rewritten due to the Doctors meddling. See some real consequences for his actions.

Loved the "Laws of Time are mine and will obey me" speech, or "Who needs an atom spliter, I have a funny robot"

But then he went into that "Biff Bong Bang Bobblywop" thinking thing he does. That annoys me so much.

I think- and I hope I am not giving RTD too much credit here- that the
    suicide
was supposed to be the time fixing itself- and telling the Doctor that he might think he's the boss of the universe, but he really isn't.

I can see what you mean DD, but I dont think that was it.
The doctor was already aware of her being an inspiration due to her dying on Mars, and not by suicide. Without this heroic death, there was no inspiration for her granddaughter to pioneer space travel. thought it was just a case of lazy writing (before I get lambasted still better writing than %95 of television out there). I think if she was able to kill herself in a manner so as a body couldn’t be found maybe, but to commit suicide and have the future news article only change several words, but remain basically the same was a little back to the future for me.

I realise I might be reading too much into a tv show that is aimed at an audience much younger than me, but I think this episode (and some recent episodes) have been more aimed at adults.

Great episode, it's been said before me but the first 45 mins were average, but the 'insane' Doctor ending was fantastic.

I don't know if this has been confirmed for The End Of Time or not, but my mate reckons (and I sort of believe him) that
Christopher Ecclestone will be in it, because in the Next Time trailer they show a guy that looks an awfully lot like him.
    I also reckon that
The Devil from The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit will be in it because the voice near the end of the trailer sounds alot like him.

(Please don't tell me if I'm right about any of those because I don't want to know :o)

    actually
the suicide is counter balanced by the rescue of her two crewmates. The clip after the suicide one shows the two saying that she saved them from mars and that she was a hero. The lives of her two crewmates filled in for the heroic death on mars and countered the stigma of her suicide. More so her failure to save the rest of the crew will be accounted for her suicide, making it more so inspiring in her ideals and roles as captain.

the more geeky question would be
how did the survivors explain jumping from Mars to earth within a day, and somehow getting there unnoticed so the captain could quietly commit suicide?

Have just been informed that the first 8 minutes of 'The End of Time' may be shown during the Children in Need special Friday the 20th of this month. There's definitely a ten doctor special planned for the evening, source for ten doctor special here

Don't take this the wrong way but I will believe it when the beeb report it. Every CiN there's a story about an every Doctor special...

A clip from the next special, now that is realistic.

You know the last scene, where he sees the ood and asks is this it? then cut scene back in the tarids and he says "No" i was so certain that he was going to say "No! - I Refuse" (like the master said in season 3) i dont think he is the master like someone said on the first page. i dont get how that could be possible but it would have been a nice touch and would also show the mind set he is in...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,311 ✭✭✭✭K-9

Would agree with others in that I wasn't that impressed by the first half hour, though the robot was cute!

After that, thought it was good.
I seriously thought he mightn't have intervened and we'd see his reaction.
Think Tennant acted that part well.
The 4 knocks part was funny,
went down well with my 11 year old, got a giggle as he knows the in jokes.
Thought the ending was very good and showed how humans can decide for themselves and defeat the doctor.

Didn't see the part about the 2 survivors, did they make sense of that?

Thought the first 3/4 was pretty good. It was darker than most of RTD's Who efforts. They also made fun of running up and down corridors (with an actual plot reason for doing it) and I kinda, despite myself, liked the stupid robot (and the Doctor defending dog robots).

What sold it was the ending.
The Doctor walking away as everyone got massacred. I kept expecting him to turn and, when people died, I expected a time trick. It didn't happen. That was nice.
Then he walks in and DT, after putting in a great haunted look as he walked across the Martian plains, suddenly goes into ham mode again and starts chewing the scenery. What made that work though was that they called him on his brazen arrogance.
Companions have called him on this crap before, but it's generally at a more micro level relating to the current story only. I don't think anyone has ever challenged the very essence of who he is and what he does. That's pretty neat and if they feed that into the next two I might be happy.

So overall the best of all the specials, including all four Christmas specials and leaving me a bit more hopeful for a good send off.

Hmmm, well it was certainly better than "planet of the dead", that's for sure and certain. But still, it was seriously hammy & sledgehammer-drama in places.

    It's kinda crazy though that
it took 4 seasons to finally work with the idea of the Doctor abusing the laws of time & going slightly crazy with power. This I thought was the sledgehammer part; Tennant chewed way too much scenary in those final scenes, I half expected a manic cackle.

As an old-schooler, I'm glad they made (multiple) references to the Ice Warriors. Yay!

I seem to be in a minority but I thought the episode was very strong until the Doctor
    decided to save the day.

The scene of him walking off, listening to the communication of the crew obviously losing control over the situation and expression on his face was very strong indeed. But that was all wasted by the rest of the episode.
It would have been better that he would have let them die and that this would mark the end of this Doctor in some way.

I am not looking forward to having The Master back as I thought the Series 3 finally was horrendous with John Sims hamming it up way too much and I'm afraid that The End of Time will be more of the same. Let’s hope I am proved wrong and the finale will actually be at the level of the Series 4 finale.

True, but has he been changing time or am I reading too much ito it? The bit where he mentions
marrying the Virgin Queen and he not being quite so virginial any more?

Did laugh at the cental locking though....:o
