We have the 'who's the best player...' poll running at the moment but who is the most successful / decorated player of all time?

Initially I was thinking Giggs but he had no success with country.

The best I could come up with is Claude Makelle - world cup, euro cup, FA cup, Premiership & league cup with Chelsea, champions league with real and maybe a cup / league elsewhere?

    Bixente Lizarazu?

    2 french league titles
    9 German cups
    6 German leagues
    1 Champions league
    1 Intercontinental cup

    1 World Cup
    1 Euro championships
    2 Confeds cup

"After winning the Intercontinental Cup in late 2001 with Bayern, Lizarazu was European Champion and World Champion on both club-level (with Bayern) and national level (with the national squad). This was the first time in history one player held such a record."

Oliver Khan appears to have won everything except a world cup - although I dont think he is a martial arts expert:)

Just happened to see an article on him in this month's Four Four Two.

Cannavaro and Maldini certainly deserve a mention, though the former never won the CL and the latter never won the World Cup

Edit: Cannavaro never actually won serie A as they were both taken away after the calciopoli scandal so I guess he's not a great candidate after all.

Henry has World Cup, Euro Championships, Spanish, English + French league/cup titles, and a Champions League.

The only weakness in Lizarazu's careers is that the only league he won was in Germany (he has one Ligue 2 title).

Can I put forward Thierry Henry?

    Monaco

    Arsenal

    Barcelona

    International

    Individual

I'll take Henry. La Liga and Prem, Copa and FA, Champions League, WC and EC. That'd do me

cisse would be one of the most decorated players

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭pierrot

Or maybe Dwight Yorke, 'successful' with the 'ladies'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I would say Seedorf is up there, as is Giggs in sheer numbers. In terms of international, I guess Zidane and Henry would be up there.

I honestly expect Ronaldo and Messi to seriously challenge all of them though

I'm sure Seedorf was in a lot of people minds but a lack of a World Cup or European Championship clinches it for me.

This guy was pretty successful. He managed to play in the Premiership despite being a 'footballer' in the same way that you or me would think of ourselves as 'footballers'.

Raúl deserves a mention, winning 3 Champions Leagues no less , 6 Spanish leagues, plus numerous Europeaon, domestic and World titles, player of the year awards, and golden boots.

He is also still Spain's, Real Madrid's, and the Champions League's all-time top scorer.

Also, based on form he deserved to at least be in Spain's European Championship winning squad last summer.

Didier Deschamps won literally everything excluding a few domestic titles. Both International honours , both European Championships, the Champions League twice, Intercontinental cup and European Super Cup and he won the big three as captain

Chevalier (Knight) of the Légion d'honneur in 1998[5][6]
    Euro 2000 winner
    Champions League winner: 1993, 1996
