    Hi lads,

I plugged in my Deben battery to charge yesterday evening for a lamping session tonite, but when I tried it today the lamp is as dim as a candle, the charge light was out so I presumed it was fully charged.

    Is my battery buggered???

What & where would I get to replace it??

    FS

    few things,
cheque the fuse in wiring loom
how long since it was last charged
and did it charge fully or has life being getting shorter over time
you will have to identify if its battrie pack or charger
    new charger 25.00 euros (deben)

If the charger is producing the right juice (use a multi meter if you have/can get one) and it's a ni-cad battery there's possibly a way to rejuvenate them by zapping with a higher voltage device (like a car battery), this can be dangerous so proceed at your own risk.
Works a treat in my experience (on cheap drill batteries).

    google rejuvenate ni-cad

you can get 7ah dry cell alarm batterys from an electrical supplies shop for small money , or you could drop in to maplin if your around Dublin;)

FS is it a 6 or 12 volt battery. but anyway try using a car charger to top it up. I use one from Aldi as its electronic and switches over to a trickle charge when the battery is fully charged.

If its like the one I had (but a Cluson) with a head phone socket on the end of the charger then they can short out when you plug it into the battery box. Thats why they say to only turn on the charger when its all pluged together.

As a last resort before shelling out for a new one, try the old battery with a new type conditioner charger. I don't know the technical in and outs of how it works but it has done the trick for me on various batteries even up to and over 1000 A/h brutes.

Are you talking about conditioning car batteries or deep cycle camper van style batteries?

    That's a fair question ivanthehunter.

I was referring from truck down to tractor and on down to jeep and car and even down to my Deben battery pack.

The battery conditioner really does "what it says on the tin"!

Where did you come across one!
Sound like it might pay its way as far as saving old batteries especially at 70euro a pop for car batteries.

I have a few cars at my folks home and she has several down around the farm that have all suffered from battery over drain at some point.

Might buy one as long as it don't come with light force wiring;)

    ha ha ha lightforce wiring!!

Some of the conditioner chargers can run up to €400+ so it's well worth shopping around.

In parallel + to + and - to - will give you 12v 14ah But make sure they are both fully charged up or one will discharge into the other.

    2x12VoltinParallel.gif

In series + to - will give you 24v 7ah

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,072 ✭✭✭clivej

You can leave the batteries connected as shown in parallel and charge them both up as usual @12 volts.

Remember a 12v battery is only 6 x 2volt cells connected up in series in a unit we know as a car battery. Look at the top where you used to be able fill them with distilled water there are 6 units.

Ah I'm so good at this electric stuff ;)

Could you possible be so good as to do up a diagram on how to connect three and four of those sized batteries Clive?

Paid out for an 18 amp battery today and I have to admit it's still stuck in my craw tonight.

Going to get onto the alarm and wholesaler companies in Galway this weekend.

    clivej ,
I had a look at the battery packs in Lidl that CJHaughy posted about , what do you think of them and what sort of lamp could you connect to them for lamping rabbits ?
Your knowledge in electric stuff would be appreciated by some still in the darkages !

This is best I can do for now. Just keep connecting the batteries in Parallel like the railway tracks. You still keep the same 12 volts but increase on the amp hours each time. And again charge them up as ONE UNIT with a car battery charger.

As i said before a standard 12v battery is only 6 x 2volt cells connected up in series in a unit we know as a car battery. Look at the top where you are able fill them with distilled water there are 6 units.

LI batteries certainly don't suit me as yet. They're only 10amp, they're ridiculously expensive, they can short out if get wet, and have heard of at least one, reliable, report about starting a fire whilst charging.

Double the amps, reduce the price to a sensible level and sort out those two problems, then I'd be interested, not before though.
