Got this in an email in work thought Id pass it on

I’m not sure if you heard but Channel 4 are doing 3d TV all next week BUT us down here in the republic cannot get hold of the free glasses they are giving away in Sainsbury's.

Some old ones won’t work either cos they have to be Blue and Amber, I emailed this bloke in Cork who runs a 3D imaging workshop, he is the only one in Ireland I know of, He also appeared on Dragons Den with his other inventions. He posted me a set of 3d glasses that will work , all I did was send my postal address to info@lenticular.ie, his name is Jon Mitton.

he emailed me his details (below) to pass on, thought it would be good to share with anyone else wanting to get in on the fun next week,

SO PASS IT ON TO ANYONE ELSE LOOKING FOR 3D IN THE LIVING ROOM

im going to ask a stupid question but why do you need them

Channel 4 will be showing certain programs in 3D. This means there's essentially 2 pictured on screen, a blue one and a red one. It will look out of focus but through the coloured glasses it pops out in 3D.

Is it the newer type that comes with Films such as Coraline, Journey to the Center of the earth etc?... I got some of them off ebay.. They weren't too expensive.

The question I would like to ask is if these programmes weren't 3D would you watch them? I am guessing no for most people.

If you are referring to the cinema glasses then they are different.

Seller is registered in Louth. So he's gone up to Sainsburys in Newry, picked up as many free 3D glasses as he can carry, then banged 'em up on eBay for €3 a pop.

    Smart move.

What ones do you need for the new 3d movies out to watch at home the likes of toy story 3d etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,449 ✭✭✭livEwirE

Yeah, I got the same email as above, John probably got a little p****d off when he started getting a flood of emails looking for the glasses :D

No no... the red and green ones that come with blu-rays or DVD's. These wont work with the old 3d movies but seem to be a new standard.

    Brilliant.

I also think that people won't watch them if they don't have the glasses, so they'll lose lots of viewers. Surely they should have got them given away free with the Radio Times or something.

Seeing as the 3D programmes on offer are so spectacularly brilliant *cough*...
...I've been thinking of how you might bodge together a DIY version of the required specs.

Obviously the correct sheet filters used in photographic/lighting setups (eg Lee filters) could be cut into the required sizes and stapled into a cardboard glasses-frame... but that either requires you have a good photo accessory supplier nearby, or you go online... both time-consuming. Lee used to give away free samples, might still do, but takes postage from UK... slow...

Then it struck me why not print you're own filters using an inkjet printer and some acetate transparency sheets... might work... or might wreck your printer if it's not geared up for it LOL
All you need is to figure out what hue/saturation works best for the required ColorCode specification :-) Hours of simple fun :-) Then it's ready for the scissors... just mind you don't wipe all the ink off, prob!!

Anyway might be good for a laugh (or a headache, given the likely image quality)! :)

Good point. Lots of people in the UK don't go to Sainsburys.

I bought some from the Ebay link on the first page of this thread on Friday and they arrived today. Can't complain about that! Cheers to whoever put up the link.

BTW, they are Sainsbury's branded. Might be a nice little earner for the guy. Or a quick, profitable way to build up feedback. Either way, I'm happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Soarer

If anyone in Cork has a spare pair, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on them.
Just saw an ad there for a Derren Brown thing on this evening in 3D, and I wouldn't mind watching that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

If anyone in Dublin / Drogheda has any spare ones please? I don't fancy going up to Newry this late in the day, and looks like good chunk of 3d programs are tonight (and the rest on the weekend).

    Thanks a million!

If any of you are badly stuck, go out and get a Box of "Quality Street", The Coloured cellophane wrappers are ideal(Roses Chocolates unfortunately now have a Printed wrapper).
Blue Wrapper used to filter Right Eye, Amber Wrapper to filter Left Eye. I taped these to an old pair of Glasses this evening and they worked a well to View Channel 4. Mind you, the Programme was fairly Boring and it was distracting to be asked every 5 minutes to Put on and then a few minutes later, take off your glasses.
