Which club are you in?

So, it's newbie season and there are probably a few people (myself included) going out on "introductory spins" with their local clubs.

But who would guess that that well-equipped and handsome person half-wheeling, braking at the front, wobbling in the bunch, forgetting to call the potholes and getting confused over the semantics of "car up", "car down" and "car back" is actually a boardsie in disguise?

Here's a spreadsheet of all the Cycling Ireland affiliated clubs, drawn from here. I've made it open access; if it attracts spam I'll set some access controls or maybe we can move it into a boards wiki article.

The idea is (obviously) that you add your boards username to the row of your club.

I would have done a poll except that's limited to 25 options.

It depends on how good you are. I believe Raam is hoping for a seven figure contract this year.

    LOL!

I paid the club dues and for gear last year. I did the CI license later on. I'll probably do the whole lot at once this year.

just to follow on from Raam's point (maybe a thread on its own !!!!) but as I am officially a veteran (well from late Nov anyway) what is the best way insurance wise to go
This year I had just a vets licence with insurance. I am thinking of keeping that way and just paying Club dues and Leauge fee's to Swords and taking out a licence and insurance with vets.
It was remarked upon (at Mt Leinster challenge I think) when I produced my vets card that the vets have better insurance than the younger riders.Maybe its because we need more maintenance............

Reason is work at the moment. Hopefully will get a chance to go to one or 2 december runs, but the good bike is on the turbo and im on the fixed. All in prep for the etape. BTW would it be okay to bring the fixed on a club run?

There should be a fixed cycling club at this stage.

Hoping to join Killarney CC but haven't gotten around to it yet. Mostly a mtb club but road spins are starting.
I won't race but will do some audax (200 not the crazy stuff).

Btw Killarney have fantastic gear - light green with pink sleeves. Tres euro.

Asked the same question myself here, but having been on a few club spins, it would be way easier to maintain a steady pace with gears. Single-speed would be more manageable, if you have the strength to accelerate and maintain pace in that one gear.

From the list I just noticed the cycling club in my home town no longer exists... I googled it and not even one hit, in the entire interweb!!

I'm sad now, I did my first ever road cycle with them many moons ago.......:(

I don't think it would be appreciated, especially if you haven't been out in a group with them before. Surely it is not so difficult to take your bike off the turbo.

I'm thinking of joining a club this winter alright. I need to get out on the bike a lot more & I presume joining a club would help get me off my arse! I would be at a fairly novice level and have never cycled in a proper group, just on my own or with mates. Do you need much experience to join?

My nearest club would probably be Lucan CC. @Lumen when do the Lucan introductory spins start?

10am Saturday from Staggs Cycles. However, there will be no beginner spin for the next two weeks (they are watching the revolution at Manchester Velodrome next weekend and racing at the Velodrome on the following weekend).

The 9.30am spin is the main Saturday spin (slightly faster – and a little longer – but not much). Sunday spins also leave at 10am.

9.30 / 10am Saturday spins are just to split the group.

I'd be up for this also - newbie power

Is there a big range of bike that go on these spins ?

I would like to avoid looking like a dick turning up in what I normally wear cycling - which is

    Helmet
    Bike shoes
    Long Skins
    Padded bike shorts
Shorts I'd wear to the gym - Still find it weird walking around in just bike shorts
    Skins top
    General dri-fit tshirt

Bike is similar to this with http://pelotonbicycles.com/feltt23.aspx

Fear of lycra will mark you out immediately as a NOOB. Loose the baggy shorts - the harsh truth of it is that no one cares about your genitals.

I saw this on the thread for St Tiernan's CC....

'Riders coming to introductory spins should have already built up a reasonable level of fitness'

What is a reasonable level of fitness? I'm thinking of joining Swords in the next few weeks...and I don't want to turn up and get left behind or hold people up..I only cycle/commute maybe 20kms roundtrip 4 days a week...will that be enough? :o

That's a reasonable level of fitness in my book. Been a long time since I was out on a Sat/Sun spin with them but you should have no problem.

Just the 10:00 one last Saturday. I'm doing the 09:30 one tomorrow, should be interesting. I'm suffering from normal "oh noes, they'll all be too fast for me" newbie dread but I'm sure it'll be fine.

See you there so, assuming my phone call with Jimmy in a bit goes okay. Not sure that his definition of a "shorter spin this week" is the same as my interpretation of said statement.

Red/White BH with Rolf Vector Pro's .... a good bike in 2000.... (no mudguards yet though) :o

You will need to ditch the following for a group spin: tri-bars, baggy shorts.
Also bring a spare tube, a pump, some cash, a small multi-tool

Fk-you - the bike cames with Tri-bars as I'll be doing Tri's next year and baggy shorts cause it still feels weird wearing lyrca, I have only been biking 3mths gimme a break , ill give the shorts back to your misses next time I see her though :D!!

I may hang on for the 10am spins if there's none on tomorrow as I have a feeling I'd be dropped fairly lively on the quicker spins :o

What kind of routes do they do from Lucan?
