Rechargeable batteries self discharge so non-rechargeables are better for things like remote controls or clocks that you want to have powered for months. Or for emergency torches where you want light after leaving for a year or two.

But if you know when you will need the light, a fully charged NiMH will beat a brand new Alkaline battery.

    Alkaline then Rechargable NiMH

At high discharge rates NiMH rechargable batteries BEAT Duracell Ultra !

Alkaline at 500mA discharge rate have a higher capacity than at 1A but still less than 2000mAh which was mid way down the NiMH chart.

The self discharge of NiMh has pretty much been eliminated By Sanyo in their Eneloop NiMh batteries. They will still retain 70-85 % of their charge after a year.

There are simmilar variants by other manufacturers like Panasonic with their infiniums.

They don't come in quite the high capacities normal NiMh's do and they cost a bit more:

anything that is marked as 'pre charged', 'ready to use'' or 'hybrid' lose far less of their capacity. ordinary nimh loses 30%

duracell also makes excellent rechargeable batteries
