No way, we'll beat the frogs!

My Arma keeps crashing to desktop, problem with GTX2xx GPUs & Arma...so it doesn't look like I'll get much game time in.....ever again....(until it's fixed).

I'm on a GTX295 and I'm having no issues, what version of nvidia drivers you running on?

Do a defrag as well and not with the crappy Vista defrag, this game is very hard on the hd and needs it in optimum shape
    Use the trial of this

Make sure You got the latest Nvidia driver

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 397 ✭✭cashville

Ah I had a look around and it appears to be a persistent problem for lots of people, doesn't appear to be a solution to it. BI say they can't fix it and nVidia don't seem to be doing anything either.

My HD is brand new so shouldn't be a problem, still happens though. It's a pity because it runs like a dream (for all of 5 minutes)

Well then hop that gpu up on Adverts.ie and order an Ati

Do you have an I7 processor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 397 ✭✭cashville

I surely do, i7 920 + the most recent drivers...191.07....I tried rolling them back, still no difference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

Don't roll them back man, thats asking for trouble,
uninstall them, reboot and boot to safe mode by pressing f8 while booting, run driver sweeper (needs installing in normal mode first), reboot and install the latest driver. See windows will always have use of some parts of the driver, this is why we go to safe mode. Do this everytime u install a graphics driver as its the most important driver in a gaming pc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 85 ✭✭c0mpliant

It seems its the combination of the i7 and the GTX2xx series.
Try disabling the Hyper Threading of the i7 from the bios, that seems to solve it for a lot of people

It's off, still happens unfortunately. Cheers for the heads up though.

It's a new build, new hard drive so the most recent nVidia drivers are the 1st on it.

Try a slightly older driver then, not the latest. The latest 9.10 Ati Catalyst broke my game, I'm using the earlier 9.9 one as it performs better. Be sure use my method and clean all traces of graphics drivers every time You update. Try the latest beta patch, it gives great performance and has huge amounts of fixes and optimisations

    Also open a thread here:

Bugs can be patched only when they know about them

Yeah, have the beta running. I'll fiddle around with rolling back again then but using the driver sweeper thing. Fingers crossed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

Don't roll back, uninstall & clean, rolling back while windows has use of the driver means there will still be traces of the old one

Anyone else having a problem with i7 + GTX2xx combo have a look.

    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=106799

At least nVidia tech support appear to be looking at it.

havnt had time lately to do any gaming - so still have arma sitting there - but I did have probs with fallout 3 exhibiting similar behavior.

the initial prob I had i'm 99% sure was related to mobo and onboard sound. the board is a gigaybyte board but using this feckin creative xi-fi MB - basically their X-fi chipset on the mobo - but here's the kicker - to get it enabled you pay something like $35 USD (or get from somewhere) the drivers to enable it. Without it there are stock drivers to enable sound.

long story short on vista had probs until I upgraded to these drivers and a lot of probs went away. having said that, I then had the occasional prob you describe of the game (in this case fallout 3) crashing to desktop but with the process not terminated. there's a niggly feeling i have that it is actually sound related, rather than graphics (running gainward gtx275 on a i7920 setup).

anyways just mention this as an alternate route to investigate. someday soonish will get a cheap dedicated sound card.

Been playing the last few hours MP with the drivers suggested in the post above, haven't crashed once. Crashed a few times last night, could it be anything to do with our server?

Try it now, I did have a ramdisk running on the server for the missions folder so that the mission was being uploaded from ram and not hd. I've reverted it to normal, see if it makes a difference
