Just listening to newstalk. The French asking for crazy money to show the second leg - TV3 bid seems to have failed (thank christ!) - RTE bid remains but looks unlikely considering what the French are asking for. Sky may not pay because if they do RTE would have to show it aswell!!!!

We may not be able to watch the game in Ireland....at all. Except on a stream somewhere. This could end up worse then the antics for the Turkey playoff some years back.

    {MOD NOTE:
Keep the derogatory names out of the thread, there's no need for it and it'll be infracted if it occurs

Unless the same happens as with one of England's qualifiers, and it's available to watch on the interweb, for a price of course.

Few interestig points raised in this interview with the TV3 guy, the FAI sold the rights to the Croker Leg to the French for 5 Million and the FFF want 1.5 million from an Irish broadcaster, French Market is 60million ppl for advertising revenue as opposed to 4 million here so the sums dont add up.

Will the French gamble on the tie being alive on Monday morning or will a deal be done before the first leg??

He also said that as the event is a "listed" event Sky may not be allowed to show it if it is not also being carried by a terrestial channell!

The presenter (tongue in cheek) suggested as the FAI have made so much money from home leg that they should subsidise the away leg!

Not worried in the slightest. Will watch it on satellite

€1.5M is alot for RTE to muster up in fairness and they probably arent going to be enticed at that price if the chance is there its all over in the first leg.

We could be saved if the BBC or ITV bid for it.

Not sure about ITV as they are a private company but why would the BBC be interested in shelling out public money for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,518 ✭✭✭✭briany

Don't know if BBC would be into it. I mean I don't think there'd be enough of an audience within their own jurisdiction for it. Of course, WE'D all watch it but why would they need to cater to us, plus if it were to be on BBC NI some of their fans might kick up a stink. Jeez this could be Turkey 1999 all over again! I remember listening to that depressing game on the radio as Ireland played inevitably towards their demise.

Here's a mad idea why not have a joint bid RTE/TV3/BBC? then you simply have to choose your warm up/halftime/post game joy/rant entertainment.

Will anyone watch it anywhere but RTE in that case though?

If the French take a two goal lead to Paris nobody will be watching it anyway.

If BBC2 (not BBC2 NI!) showed that game it would get a couple of million no bother.

Not going to be on TF1 I'm afraid.
French commercial broadcaster M6 has confirmed its interest in developing a strong sports offer by acquiring the rights to show the forthcoming World Cup qualifying football match between France and the Republic of Ireland on November 14 in Ireland.
M6 reportedly spent under €5m in taking the rights from under the nose of commercial rival TF1, which holds the exclusive rights to France’s home matches.

But it'll be online somewhere so meh, ill be watching it, not in the pub, but meh.

I'd watch the build up, half-time and post match analysis on rte, but watch the match on bbc and bbc analysis when the ads are on rte. Same as for most matches really (swap bbc for any other channel as appropriate, depending on the game).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

I hope it doesn't come down to relying on a stream. If the match is all the play for going to Paris I want to be in a pub with a load of other screaming fans watching it, not huddled over my laptop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

    They'll surrender the rights eventually

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Well if RTE can fork out millions on crap programmes by the bucketload surely to God they can spare a few bob for what will probably be their most watched sport event of the year

The presenter (tongue in cheek) suggested as the FAI have made so much money from home leg that they should subsidise the away leg!

was actually thinking the same last week

Apparently the French are peeved as FAI sold the rights to some obscure French station and not to one of the maim stations and this has ennoyed the French and forced them to dig in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,365 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

Jaysus, just checking there. The FAI sold their rights to everybody.

Will the French FA be that stubborn and alienate half there potential viewing audience?

Sky of course have been quite, on the EPG for the night in Question they have "Football TBA".

Pretty clever, obviously waiting til the outcome of Saturday before tabling a bid.

Tis worrying though as only 3 providers are listed as having it, they are so obsecure that no pubs will have them though.

They shouldn't pay silly money for it either to be honest.
If they do then they'll just be held to ransom by independent broadcasters in the next campaign as well.

Its partly the FAIs fault as whilst they were well within their rights to seek the highest amount they could for the Dublin game they've annoyed the French people, FA, politicians etc by selling to an obscure PPV channel. So we can't count on much support when we go pleading next week re the Paris match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

Also aren't RTE Sport completely busto. They bought the rights to the World Athletics Championships but decided it was too expensive to actually cover it.

If this game ends up not being on terrestial, no matter what the result, I think a national campaign against Delany has to start here.

Have a guess what the FAI charged the French TV networks - almost €5 million. €1.5 seems like a snip for the return leg & if the FAI had any decency, they'd make up the shortfall on RTE's bid, gurantee that the country would get to see the game AND still make a healthy profit.

Once again, it goes to show where their interests lie & it ain't with the fans.

Didn't M6 offer that money? Also look at the difference in population. Sporting events will always cost more in France than what they cost here.

I wouldn't blame the FAI for accepting a bid like that. The FFF are only pissed off because it isn't being shown on TF1 like always.

I will be doing the same :D

Seriously though, this is the 'pea-hearted French' (love that Cascarino line, sorry) getting one back at the Irish for selling to M6 over the FFF's preferred love of kick backs TF1.

No prob My laptop has a hdmi port
All you do is hook that up to the tv and also switch the Sound playback to HDMI (right click on the sound icon on the system tray it'll come up there then set to default)
Then restart the laptop and it'll playback over the hdmi.

If your tv has a DVi or VGA port you can hook up through that instead of hdmi.

It depends on the laptop and the TV. Newer TVs will have a HDMI port and/or VGA and/or DVI. You just buy the cable that matches up to the port on your laptop. HDMI will do audio, but VGA/DVI only do picture so you'll have to buy another cable for inputting the audio, typically a 3.5mm to 3.5mm will do but again it entirely depends on the TV.

Older TVs are more difficult. You can get adaptors that will let you connect VGA to Scart or similar.

I hadn't really considered this as a serious possibility but I guess at this stage it's looking more and more likely that the biggest game we've had in 8 years won't be available on television.

As for streams, would the fact that a couple of million people are all going to be looking for the same stream not create problems?

That lunatic on the Frontline had a point, if rte had fired Pat Kenny a few years ago they'd have the money saved up by now for the play-off! I know which I prefer to see on tv.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

In my experience Foreign Streams tend to work much better but for such a high profile match I don't think finding a stream will be a problem I would imagine the french and portugal matches would be everywhere as the two most highprofile games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,434 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

    Streams?

This game is the type of game best enjoyed in a communal setting (bar, house party) with friends / family. I'm not going to sit glued to my laptop. If the worst comes to the worst we'll go old school and crack out the wireless. :)

Any updates on whats happening lads? Last I heard yesterday was RTE and SKY had tabled a bid for 600.000 the French had come back and said they wanted 1,500,000. Surely, if my dealings with used car sales men is anything to go by, they will have agreed on 1,000,000 by now. It'll be a done deal, happy days. COME ON IRELAND!!!

    This is not good.

Free To Air on TF1 but it broadcasts in secam.

Thats to say that you would need some specialised antiquated satellite equipment.

stay tuned to the foreign satellite board. If its on , they will know.
