Naming your kids after you?

Recently i've met 3 people called Eddie, Paddy and Robbie. They all shared one thing in common. They were named after their father. I just started watching Breaking Bad and the kid is named after his da in that too. But he changes his name. Just got me thinking. Why do people do that and does it bother anybody here who has the same name as their da? Is it an egotistical thing or what's the craic with it? These days it seems to be grand to name your kid after car models and brands of condoms. So it ain't like there's a shortage of names out there.

Well some families would have names that are passed down in some variant as a kind of tradition....

Me, My Dad, and my late Grandfather all have different versions of the same name.....

I know of a family with 3 kids, all boys call Jack, Eoin and Séan. Father is John. Pretty sad if you ask me.

In my family, the first grandson is always named after the paternal grandfather.

I'd never name my kid after me. Seems a bit egotistical.

same with my dad , his dad , and my brother..

also my other brothers middle name is the same as my dads 1st name , and my dads middle name is the same as my brothers 1st name.. and they both took they same name at confrimation.. and yeah twas on purpose

I just asked them there why.. they said "meh"

it seems a bit egotistical to me.

i'd also rather not call a child after anyone else in the family (eg grandparents), id rather give them their own individual name (note to bob geldof, "individual" does not have to mean something as moronic as fifi trixibelle or peaches)

my parents had a baby that died shortly after birth. they had him baptized before he died. years later, they called another son the same name... thats a little odd imo.

it isn’t egotistical at all, rather it is more a Irish Cultural thing, where the first son is named after the father.

That point granted, I am not named after my Dad.

My Aunt and Uncle on one side is named after their parents. They ran outta names to copy for my mam.

My uncle on the other side is also named after his father.

My second name is after my mam, my brothers second name is after my grandfather and my sisters first name is after an aunt and second name is after the opposite side of the familys aunt.

    Strong tradition in our family.

It is quite stupid....I think kids should be allowed change their name when they are old enough (about 6 or 7)

My brother is called after my dad, used to get very confusing with post.
Think my mam said it as a joke and had to go with it then cos my dad was so delighted.
OH's younger bro is also called after his dad, again gets very confusing. no idea why though.

I think I would like to give my son my surname as his first name. It is a name that can be used as a first name btw!

I wouldn't name the child after me or my father. The Jr. part of a name is just..no!

It's not just an Irish thing at all. It's done in lots of cultures for thousands of years.

I can understand the grandfather thing but not really naming your kid after yourself. It always seems to be a male thing too. I've only ever met one girl named after her mother.

The main thing for me would be having a son so my last name can continue on since it's a traditional Irish one and not that common.

I have the same name as my father and grandfather. I'm the forth and I write that after my name.

One of my mates has the same name as his dad. He really dislikes his name.

He also really dislikes children in general, so if he ever has a kid (probably even a girl), I'd put good money on him calling them Percy. :pac:

I'm glad that's not the case - if it was I'd now be called Flora Poppy!!

I'd be more inclined to name a child after a good friend than a relative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Hrududu

I had a friend who was named after his father. He was adament that his first son (whenever he'd get round to having one) would be called the same name. It was confusing enough with two of them, adding another to the mix wouldn't make it any easier.

I just think its a bit egotistical. And it always seems to be the father naming his son the same name. I havent met any woman yet that's given her daughter her own name.

A Jr. after a name sounds daft sometimes, but Óg sounds pretty cool; e.g.: Sean Óg, Colm Óg, etc.

Thats a good thing. We need more names like that. I dont get why people think you have to call your kid Billy or Timmy or Nancy or whatever. Whats wrong with calling them Seven or Pena or Moon Unit?

Name the kid after your favourite pint.

    E.G.....Miller Guinness Hennessy :D

There are worse things people do too tbh, the likes of Donald Donaldson springs to mind, or James Bond etc. That's a case of you have x surname and an infinite number of names to choose from, but yet you still choose the one name guaranteed to cause the kid future trauma.

Each to their own, I think it sounds hilariously crappily O'Cringy.

Close enough.......but I give you Moon Bloodgood, the hottie from the new Terminator!

See.....if people started branching out with imaginative names that are full of awesomeness, then maybe there would be more beautiful people amongst us!

Cos she certainly didn't turn out too bad!

My family are great, I just think it's a bit corny to call a child after your father or grandfather.

Traditions are traditions I suppose, but naming your kid after yourself always seemed a bit egotistical to me.

My brother gave his daughter my middle name, and at first I thought it was a mistake because he didn't tell me beforehand and he didn't seem to like me very much back then. But then he went and gave his son his middle name, so I guess it was intentional. He's the only person I know who passes down middle names.

Then my daughter would be Hoegarden, and a name like that will not go down well on the schoolyard.
