The Great Swine Flu myth?

How many do you know who have had Swine Flu?

Was talking at work today, and nobody actually knew someone who had it, had stories of people who knew people, but didn't actually know anyone themselves?

Then heard the HSE announce that Ireland has twice the rate of infection as the rest of Europe!

So, do you know anyone who actually has had it?

I've had it. Two of my freinds/ roommates had it at the same time as me, we figure one of us infected the others.

I know several people who've been diagnosed with it. I'd imagine the HSE stats employ some sort of extrapolation as not everyone who has it is getting diagnosed with it.

    Nephew had it

Yup, 3 people I know have had it. One of our managers on our soccer team, and a cousin and uncle.

    All are ok now though.

So the limits of your own personal experience renders swine flu a 'myth'......!

If lack of personal experience of a phenomenon are the criteria for determining whether something exists, then the following clearly do not:
    1. Impotence
    2. Premature ejaculation

    Know a few people.

The rep of the HSE on newstalk last night also said that anybody with any flu, mild or serious, has swine flu as it is the only flu going around in Ireland at the moment.

That would suggest we all know plenty of people who have had it but just didnt think it was serious and therefore not swine flu.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 205 ✭✭BennyLava

Actual swine flu, or suspected?, to be honest going by the HSE's list of symptoms could be anything from a really bad cold, ordinary flu etc.

and since they have gone past the stage where they are actually confirming diagnoses, just stating you have it if you can tick off a list of symptoms

I still think the actual level of infection is nowhere near what is been reported

That dosen't make sense, if the only flu in Ireland is swine flu, why did the HSE waste money injecting people for ordinary flu,

Aren't they injecting money into the health service by injecting people for big bucks?

How many people do you work with? Say you work with 20 people, and you've talked to all of them about swine flu, and they each know 50 people, and even if none of them have had the swine flu, that number of people is actually still an extremely small proportion of the total population. So it doesn't mean the HSE are wrong.

Certainly not as myth. My wife has just got over swine flu and now she has phenomia. Nasty stuff.

It is worth noting that the labs are no longer testing for swine flu unless you're being admitted to hospital with complications. So when HSE figures say that there were 30,000 new cases of swine flu last week, 99.99% of those were diagnosed over the phone on the basis of, "Doctor....I feel really sick".

That's not to say that a lot of those aren't swine flu, but you can expect the reported infection rates to skyrocket over the coming months.

I had it last week, as did 7 of my mates and my girlfriend. Not a nice experience.

3 people so far diagnosed with it in my office, also have a look at Ukraine, the infection rate there is off the charts :(

I know loads of people who say they have it or have had it. I don't think any of them really did have it though.

    I personally don't think it's a myth.

The actual virus isn't a myth but its blown completely out of proportion. Swine flu has the exact same symptoms as regular flu and its no more lethal than a regular flu...am I the only one who has noticed that every time they mention a fatality due to swine flu its always followed by "the person had previous medical illness"

It doesn't always have the same symptoms. Also, unlike regular flu, it is affecting a disproportionate amount of young people. And you do realise that "underlying medical condition" also includes pregnancy and asthma, which are not particularly outlandish.

The reason I mentioned the outbreak in the Ukraine is that from what I've read, it's the first major mutation of the virus :(

This mutated version aparrently has flu like sympthoms for about a week then changes to what appears to be chronic pneumonia, I will do some more reading on this and try to post some links.

A friends daughter has had it and she was very ill by all acounts. It's a reallly nasty bug. She's the only person I have heard of to have it.

I think I have it atm.. picked up a flu last week and still feeling the worst of it now, no way to be sure I guess as doctors won't test you for it now unless you're in a bad way

My nephew had it just a few weeks ago. He had to be hospitalized for a bit, but he recovered (he's 6).

Well i read the conspiracy forum and Run_to_the_hills says that it is in fact a global conspiracy to inject us all with nanotech micro robots which will then control us all and make us all asexual drones in servitude to the queen of England.

I believe him too, very sensible and rational person he is.

    No.

Anyone I know who "had" It never had It properly diagnosed. Therefore I'm gonna say they had the regular flu.

This is a a pointless thread - what is in it for HSE to be most infected population!

By the way, know 2 people who were diagnosed with it (and through them, their families - that makes 7 people in total).

I've had a bit of a cold recently, you know, runny nose, sore throat, occasional headaches but all this swine flu rubbish I'm reading, really. What kind of hypochondriac muppet would think you can actually die fr...........................

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

People want to live in fear.

SARS, Avian Flu, CJD, HIV (which is extremely difficult to catch)... and then there are things like Al-Qaeda, Sellafield, global warming, etc. People want to believe they are genuinely at risk from these things.

Yet they will happily drive their car everyday not realising they are thousands - maybe millions - of times more likely to die in a car crash than any of the above.

No amount of education will make these people see the light, so I've accepted it is mother natures intention that the majority of the world will be gullible and a bit thick.

Saying all that, I know a few people who supposedly got swine flu (diagnosed over the phone). However, as we know by now, it is fairly harmless for nearly everyone, so I'm not worried about it in the slightest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,248 ✭✭✭Slow Show

Think I've had it...there was an outbreak in my school. For me, it was either a really really bad cold or a fairly mild-average flu, but it only lasted a few days. It was torturous enough while it did though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Swine Flu is a specific variation of flu, its not a myth.
