Not sure about the DST theory myself....i think it was radioactive emmisions from the sun that caused havoc with tv signals.

When they calculate the ratings is it just the initial showing that's taken into account or do they count all the repeats that tend to be on at all hours on the digital channels?

Afaik, the standard way they take ratings is anyone who watched while it aired, plus anyone who watched it on TiVo or OnDemand within 24 hours of the original broadcast.

its done with the neilson rating system, which use what is more or less a control group of people, its hooked up to a control group of people covering all demographs, but maybe only 2-4 million people could be in the control group, from this then the calculate how many people watched a certain show on a certain night, then mulitply it to the population of the country to get the "potential" ratings of each show, its completely reatarded that a group of 2-4 million viewers determine what the other 296 million viewers in america watch, shows live and die by what those 2-4 million people watch,

didnt anyone ever wonder why the highest viewed shows only draw in 8% of the population of america, the highest rating being around 25 million viewers, done by the population of america, at nearly if not more than 300 million,

There are only 25,000 total American households that participate in the Nielsen daily metered system.[11] The number of U.S. television households as of 2009 is 114,500,000.[12] As a result, the total number of Nielsen homes only amounts to 0.02183% of the total American television households, meaning that 99.97817% of American households have no input at all into what is actually being watched

Their site claims that they'll verify their statistical model - for example, using cold calls they follow up and see if their sample is representative. I'm still not convinced - from the tiny amount they have, it seems as if one person tires of a show it could drastically shift its ratings and ruin it for everyone. Surely, with the high-speed data connections we have nowadays there's a better approach?

They have the Nielsen system in Ireland as well. Only 1,000 boxes for the whole of the country. I'd be interested to hear if anyone here even knows someone in their peer group who has a box.

Never heard of anyone having a Nielsen box....it could all be a scam, corporate guys throwing a dice on which shows gets axed or renewed.

This thread has gone way off topic, its meant to be about the show not how the viewers are counted

The bad news: Chuck is down further again in the US ratings to a 1.9 -> http://www.aintitcool.com/node/44358

The worse news: According to Herc on AICN, production wrapped last week on the season finale and its a cliffhanger.

^ grow up...ratings are important, without ratings there would be no show....period. And i don't single out Chucks ratings either, i report ratings for alot of shows.

I'm giving info and my opinion on ratings.

Mercy and Trauma are SO bad that there is no chance these will be kept. With Heroes going too and the Marriage Ref likely to not survive much longer, NBC doesn't have enough shows with a good fan base (like Chuck) to start dropping shows that have potential for ratings and sponsorship (read: subway & Nestlé).

Angela Bromstad (president of NBC Universal Television) seems to like the show too and when asked about 4th season, she said that if it mantains its ratings and develops a bit more it will likely be back again.

Finally, it has good DVR numbers and with Comcast's impending purchase of 51% of NBC Universal, it is likely DVR numbers will be holding as much weight as live ratings (which would be good for Chuck!)

I'm getting a bit sick of the whole Chuck/Sarah (Sam) story is getting a bit stale... lets get them together already and move on!

The problem with this is that the ratings havent been maintained. There's been a big drop the past two weeks. :( I'm refusing to give up hope though. I'll eat loads of Subway to help the cause.

FYI...i'm not dissing or gloating, i've enjoyed this season alot. I never gave it a chance and decided to watch and decide for myself....i now like the show. But it's numbers speak for themselves.

I still think it's on the bubble, we have 8 eps. to go and i doubt any decision will be made until the May upfronts.

They still have the back 6 to actually pick the numbers back up.
You also have to remember that the NCAA basketball tournement is happening at the moment and the numbers are likely suffering slightly because of that.

Also, 2 other things are going to play into Chuck's future: 1, it is actually outperforming most other NBC shows at the moment; 2, it is still averaging higher than season 2 so far and that's before DVR is factored in.

I'm not saying it's definitely going to survive, I hope it does... but there's no reason to be afraid yet!

There are 6 episodes left before they need to decide to renew or cancel. Chuck always has a good finale, so it's a shame that this episode won't be considered in the decision.

    Josh Schwartz teases 'Chuck' finale
The season three finale of Chuck will feature "two big game-changing twists", according to the show's executive producer Josh Schwartz.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Schwartz promised that the two-hour event will top last year's finale.

"This finale will leave fans very satisfied and yet talking about what's to come for a knock-on-wood season four," he said.

"Much like last year, we're putting all of our chips on the table. We are going to drive our fans into a frenzy."

According to reports, the May 24 finale will include a childhood flashback scene and a major death.

Chuck continues Monday at 8pm on NBC.

I agree. Sarah bores me to death these days and the chemistry between the pair is starting to feel very strained. Chuck/Hannah was a more interesting match I thought.

    FYI...i'm not dissing or gloating

You could just post the link to the ratings - there is no need to make the ominous claim "RIP" as well, the show is far from dead. Sure enough, it looked like it had no chance of survival last year and still, here it is. NBC is in a far worse position this year as well and they may hang on to more shows than usual as well...

Anyway, another good episode - really enjoyed it. Disappointing to hear about it doing it worse in the ratings but I'll enjoy every minute we get...

I was happy with Chuck/Hannah and Shaw/Sarah - it almost seems like they were going somewhere with that storyline and abandoned it for some reason.

Sarah's redeeming quality is that she is absolutely sexual, but Hannah wasn't too tough on the eyes either!
