I found out what the JC 2010 Science projects are!

    Biology:

Investigating the factors which influences a plants absorbing of water from the soil through the roots.

    Chemistry:

Investigating the effects of indigestion remedies and comparing them.

    Physics:

Investigating the factors which would influence the speed of a toy car rolling down a slope

Kinda difficult. Worth 12.5% of the final exam each. It's compulsary that two are completed.

i like the look of the physics and biology ones.Avoid the chemistry one at all costs.

Chemistry looks to be the most straightforward of the lot. Titrate each indigestion remedy (assuming they are in liquid form or dissolved) against a standard solution of HCl. See which one neutralises the most HCl. Use an indicator.

i find that quite hard actually :p

I find Chemistry & Physics to be the two easiest.

well there's that side of it too, but i find the biology ones a pain as you have to monitor the plants over a couple of weeks maybe, and remember to keep them alive. chemistry/physics could be done and dusted in a double class once you have figured out what you're doing.

I think that chemistry and biology would be the easiest , well maybe not the easiest but the one that I think I could actually figure out if my brain wasn't so mushed up right now (we have christmas tests this week :(

I think the Physics and Chemistry are best! That way you don't have to look after plants! That one is messy. Who will look after it at the weekend. Also it is a prolonged one. Takes the most time to see the result.

    Thoughts?

    I agree!

Do we have to do all of them? My teacher said we're starting them soon but she didn't say anything about them. I don't have a clue about them either

    We have to do two.

Oh cool :) I'd say we'll do the Chemistry & Biology, we're only starting physics now.

We've been doing Physics since 1st year? :pac:

How come you're only starting now? We basically have the whole course covered.

teachers help with them thought don't they so nothing would be hard with their help

You do it in groups & you have to write it all in your own words. The teacher's won't be helping that much.

Last year's projects were easier, especially the chemistry one. There's one "easy" one every year, and this year that appears to be the physics one. For everyone involved, get a Leaving Cert physics textbook or look it up somewhere, it's an experiment on the LC course in the mechanics section.

The other two aren't so nice. Chemistry is easy enough in theory, but I'd imagine it'd be abit labourious to do. You'd probably have to get a solution of HCl, and I'm not sure by "indigestion remedies" does it mean any ole base you can have or actually tablets on the market (such as Rennie, which is just Calcium Carbonate, which may be a useful point for you doing this). You'd have to be careful with controls though, and very precise with measurements. I hate titration tbh. As far as I remember it's *touched* in the JC course (titration) with HCl (acid) and Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3, base).
Again, titration is covered in LC chemistry.

I'd keep away from biology, personally. Perhaps I haven't covered it yet on my own biology course, but it seems awkwardish.

I'd say it'd be physics and chemistry. Would be interested to see what the biology one is about though.

I agree, they were easier last year and the rusting of nails one was particularly handy. Our science teacher did a mock project last year and we did that one.

Yes, as far as I know, the Chemistry one includes tablets such as rennie, gaviscon etc.

Thanks for the tip on the LC Physics book!

    What are they?? :S
I didn't know you had experiments for the J.C.. And no im not living under a rock, we were never told about any of this.....

Well, basically they're worth 25% of the final total of your Science JC. You have to do two out of the three options (worth 12.5% each.) The Department of Education release different titles every year and you usually do them in groups with your class, but you have to write up all your own work. They're usually done from Christmas up to the Mocks!

    :)

Are we shown what to do?? God help us I can only imagine this.. We, errm are not very "professional" doing experiments in our class!

I had a bad teacher last year and we didn't do any of the physics meant to be done, so now we have to do it all
But we've all of Biology and Chemistry done ;)

we've only got one chapter left to do, i think it's a chemistry one.But we have some chapters that we have to go over because our classes were all mixed up this year so some people have covered some stuff, other peoplr have covered other suff but I only have one chapter left.

My science teacher said the biology one would be a bit hard. Is it better to work with someone you are friends with than someone who you don't really talk too?

I still have to do all of my science reports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,218 ✭✭✭padocon

Meh, none of my very very good friends are in my class. If they were, I don't think I'd go with them anyway. I don't mind who I go with really. I'd rather not go with a few but.

I'll tell you who I go with after.:D

Ha Ha! I meant I will tell you if it was someone I never talk to or one of my friends. I was answering your question. Are you always forgetful this late?

    To whoevers question it was!
I used sit with one of my quiestish friends in the middle but then our teracher gave us seats and she put me at the back with one of my closest friends! :D
We have learned near to nothing the last year!

You may come to regret that in June. :D
