with money tight and the cycling addiction strong, should we have a bargain alerts sticky? only a thought, but if someone spots a bargain like, tires/wheels/service discounts (bike stuff) they can post it! :-) only a thought, but would be very useful.

whats yis think? split into onroad and offroad cycling (plz) :D

if this is a no go, mods please delete.

could it go in adverts - with a bargain alert tag?

and in the same place we could have a bargain request style option.

btw, I've no objection to the sticky, just expanding/throwing alternatives out.

It will become a magnet for shameless plugs and shilling.

So we may as well call it the "Bargains, shilling, and shameless plugs" stickie.

This is a danger alright. It could also descend into rows about whether something is crap or value for money.

I don't think it would be so bad if people gave an opinion on stuff they've used.

It's possibly a bit niche. Or overpriced, I dunno. I might take it to a cross race at some point.

    It's also too small.

oh I have a feeling this will plummet quickly into personal attacks and (as been witnessed on the bargain alerts thread) laughing at noobies for daring to think that any bike under 350 is not just a BSO.

    what is this forum for?

As in "small for a 54cm" bike or 54cm is inherently small?

I only raise the point because I seriously contemplated Lumen's Focus as a winter trainer before realising that it's not that different from my "summer" bike and that I should probably save up for a full carbon for next year thus relegating the current bike (a Trek 1500) to permanent winter status.

This is a roundabout way of my saying I thought it (the Focus) was an attractive bike at a reasonable price.

He means "too small for me".

If Blorg sees a bike that fits, he buys it. Even if he has three the same already, and particularly if it's a Focus or a Planet-X.

As Lumen intimates, it is inherently small for me which is all that really matters.

@kierank01- that forum is full of stuff that would be of little interest to us cyclists.

    Back to the bargains.

PBK have three flavours of Clif Bar on a Buy One Get One Free offer, I figure that works out at 59p per bar. This is cheaper than the boxes of 15 as far as I can make out. I bought 40. I hope they are not nearing their best-by date.

What's the texture like? I'm a fan of Alpen chocolate cereal bars.

They are nothing like that, they are a sort of a chewy paste sort of thing. Key is they are compact for the calories and don't tend to melt in a jersey pocket or fall apart when you open them. I found the one I had tasty, would buy them more only they are generally too expensive and I am a cheapskate for that sort of thing. You are welcome to try one when my 40 arrive :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,901 ✭✭✭lukester

Clif bars rock. And they're probably good for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Unfortunatly not such a great deal after all
We have received your recent order but due to the size and weight of the order it will incur extra postage costs to be sent via courier, if you wish to proceed with the order as it stands we would require you to pay £11 towards the postage. We do state at the checkout “Postage rates are based on average order size. Exceptionally large or heavy orders may be retrospectively charged additional postage at the discretion of Probikekit Limited.” Your order would contain 40 Clif bars which is reasonably heavy.

As a secure site we do not store card details and so I would require you to forward them on either via email, phone or fax including the long card number, expiry date and security code on the reverse (last 3 digits). Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

I asked if there was any number I could buy but now the chocolate chip ones are sold out  I guess on the other hand I wouldn't tend to eat a lot of bars over the winter anyway.

I bought a load of cliff bars ages ago. Then I ate them all while watching the telly. They are far too tasty to have lying around the kitchen.

Could I suggest a sticky for posting bad bits of road, like the open water pipe cover at the junction of Eccles Street and Upper Dorset Street? And maybe a map with all the bike shops in dublin or even Ireland shown. They might prove useful. I like maps I do

OK back on topic. That is a very good price for Aksiums, especially from a local shop.

I mentioned it on another thread but Dunnes are doing Natural Confectionery Company jellies for 77c/180g bag (half price.) I have stocked up with Jelly Snakes, Squirms, Unbearables, Dinosaurs, Party Mix and Fruit Salad. They have others too. I am trying very hard not to eat them except when on a ride.

Ingredients: Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Gelatine... just what you need.

I went through Stepaside today at lunchtime on my way to and from Enniskerry but no gnawing happens on a lunchtime cycle! Were you one of the very few other cyclists (possibly only one now that I think of it.) Great day for it.

Just received my latest order from PBK, and they are offering a 10% discount on all purchases using the code 'xmas'.

Wiggle were sold out of trekmates merino base layers, so next best value one I could find was this from Endura, about 28 quid with the discount.

PBK are doing the Park CG-2 chain cleaner for £23.31 (37% off.) Note this includes a bottle of citrus degreaser and a cassette cleaning brush along with the device itself. Honestly this chain cleaner is fantastic, I had a cheaper one of similar design but the Park one works much better.

    NP08360.jpg

By way of comparison it is £32.99 on CRC (reduced from RRP of £36.99.)

They are generally not great all right. LBSes can be competitive on certain tyres, Joe Daly's does Ultremo Rs for €29.95 which is less than I can find online. Do you feel lucky!

Update on the Clif Bars, they said I could order up to 20 post-free. So keep it below that and you could be OK. BOGOF so that means ordering no more than 10 bars. Also note they are all best before around the end of March 2010 so no you would want to be eating them over the winter, I know personally I would have more use for the things in summer. Almost 200 calories in a very compact 50g package.
