    Hey all.

With good ol' Christmas approaching, I was just wondering what your favourite seasonal films are.

    Here's my to watch list;

    National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
    Die Hard
    Die Hard 2
    Home Alone
    Home Alone 2
    Scrooged

Movies like this are a staple for me, I couldn't let Christmas pass without watching these.

    What are your seasonal favourites?

Dunno, don't watch many seasonal films anymore, but A Nightmare Before Christmas is a good inbetweener between Hallowe'en and Christmas.

Not Christmas unless Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is on RTE. *ducks*

    Classic.

I have it on dvd, and although not exactly a christmas movie, it will definitely get a playing.

    Gene Wilder, what a legend.

OP, my list is pretty much the exact same! I love watching Christmas movies in the days (or weeks) leading up to the big day. It depends what's on TV too I guess. My little brother and sister are still very young so we watch all the kids movies too; The Santa Clause, Muppets, Jingle All The Way and Miracle on 34th Street! All great movies to watch around Christmas time!

Hmm... I'm surprised no one has mentioned the most popular Christmas film ever made

    It's a wonderful life

and then of course is the best version of Scrooge ever made with Alastair Sim in the title role.

"Now I have a machine gun...Ho Ho Ho"

    Love that line.

Funny how an all-out action movie, with dead guys everywhere, can be so festive.

    Back To The Future.....

I know it has nothing at all to do with Christmas, but it seems to be shown at least once over the Christmas period... and is a great film!

Have to always watch leathal weapon 1, die hard 1 and home alone 1&2 and for some strange reason I always watch the rocky boxset.

not xmas films but always shown though

It's ridiculous how many different versions of A Christmas carol I watch. There is:

    Muppet Christmas Carol
    Scrooged
    Blackadders Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart

Plus this year I've found an audiobook with Patrick Stewart reading the original book which I'll be listening too on Xmas Eve. And there is the new animation Christmas Carol this year with Jim Carrey and I've never seen the Alastair Sim version so I'll try and catch that this year. Wow that is a lot of versions of the same story!!

Other than that the staples are:

    Mary Poppins
    Home Alone
    National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
    Die Hard
    Gremlins
Raiders of the Lost Ark and/or The Last Crusade
    It's a Wonderful Life

    Raiders of the Lost Ark

Ah, but doesn't it suck when they show this and all the gory bits are cut out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,171 ✭✭✭Neamhshuntasach

Over the course of Christmas i tend to watch almost all that was listed here. Especially the first 2 Die Hards and Home Alones. Another one i usually watch is Trapped in paradise and for some reason Ground hog day. Guess it's just the snow in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,896 ✭✭✭Hande hoche!

Jingle all the way. Nothing like watching Arnie punch and then drink with a reindeer. Also Bad Santa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭Ann22

It's A Wonderful Life....have to have that on, on Christmas morning.
The Wizard Of Oz...so many happy childhood memories.
    Elf.
    Oliver!
    The Muppets Christmas Carol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,006 ✭✭✭MistyCheese

    For me,

    And the already mentioned
    • Jingle All The Way
    • Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory
    • National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
    • Scrooged

    Not for me but
    • Miracle on 34th Street

    • The Nutcracker
    • Deck The Halls
    • How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Also the original starwars trilogy which used to always be on too and this little gem

    brockes-600.jpg

Another couple which used to be on tv a lot were The wizard of Oz & Gone with the Wind, Cassablanca too - no christmas theme but one time christmas favourites.

I never considered Die Hard a christmas movie but will certainly put it on the list to watch this year.

For me though the animated "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is the ultimate Christmas movie. Probably cause I grew up in Canada eh?

Actually it was mentioned a few posts back, Trapped in Paradise is another great Christmas Film. Love it, love it, love it!! :)

Yep it has to be It's A Wonderful Life.

It is such a brilliant film, with Jimmy Stewart in top form whilst surrounded by an excellent supporting cast.

Now, it's not a Christmas movie at all, but for some reason, I always seem to watch My Neighbor Totoro at Christmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 772 ✭✭✭X-Calibre

Gremlins is a staple of my Christmas tv watching for as long back as I can remember. That and Santa Claus The Movie - classics

    I absolutely love Christmas films.

    My favourites are;

    Home Alone 1 & 2,
    Die Hard 1 & 2,
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factor (the original),

    Back to the Future,
    National Lampoons Christmas Vacation,
    Elf,
    Scrooged,
    Weekend and Bernies (don't ask)

I plan on watching all of the above over the coming Christmas, can't wait.

    *takes deep breath*

    Home Alone 1 & 2
    Santa Claus: The Movie
The Santa Clause (even number 2)
    Miracle on 34th Street

I love the Muppet's Christmas Carol. Great christmas movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,612 ✭✭✭uncleoswald

As long as I get a few minutes in of Gremlins, Babe, Willy Wonka and any of the first three Indys I'm happy. Otherwise its just not Christmas.

And for some reason putting on the dvds doesn't count, it MUST be on television.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,931 ✭✭✭az2wp0sye65487

And for some reason putting on the dvds doesn't count, it MUST be on television.

I never thought of that before, but it's so true! It HAS TO BE SHOWN on TV to give you that 'Christmassy' feeling!

Also, I never buy TV guides/magazines, RTE Guide etc. as I'm sure a lot of others don't. (Just look up the listings on the Digi Box) But you MUST get either the RTE Guide or some varient that comes free with the papers on hand for the festive season!

Strange isn't it? I think it must be a sense of community thing. Of course it helps that there are no commercial breaks on Christmas Day!

Yep its just not Cristmas without the bumper RTE Guide.

    1. Elf.
    2. It's a Wonderful Life.
    3. Die Hard.
    4. Scrooged, the Alistair Sim Scrooge, or A Muppet Christmas Carol. Or all three.

The Santa Clause is surprisingly good too.

We started a new tradition last year, where the day before Christmas Eve becomes Black Christmas. Everyone gets a small gruesome gift, drinks a gory cocktail, and watches Christmas horror movies.

Black Christmas is the obvious choice (the 1974 version, as pointed out), but there is a surpising number of them. Silent Night Deadly Night, You'd Better Watch Out, Santa Claws, P2, Santa's Slay, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,568 ✭✭✭candy-gal1

oooohhh i love all the xmas movies! :D but some of my faves would have to be nightmare before xmas, phantom of the opera 2004, the santa clause, home alone, go, its awonderful life, and the muppet xmas carol!
oh i think i might watch some now! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭deathstarkiller

I love movies set at Christmas like, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

    Festive porn. Aw yeah baby.

But apart from that Home Alone and Home Alone 2 are always good to watch.

Avoid The Wizard Of Oz at all costs. Fcuking hate that film.
