Best place in town for Coffee and a bun on a Saturday

Anyone recommend any personal favourites? Just somewhere on a Saurday afternoon in town to relax, 2 people, have a coffee and a bun. Like bewleys used to be. I find most "cafes" are horrible little kips, their buns are never fresh and the places are always too small and cramped. And more often than not, expensive. Current personal fav is Old Quarter. Find the place at the top of Cruises St, cant think of the name now, to be truly dreadful.

I am not a coffee drinker so I can't help you too much there.
I like Cafe on the row myself, they do really good chocolate fudge cake there.

I like a nice bun and a cup of tea after I go into Hickeys to collect new wool for the jumper I'm knitting.

Hi OP, Delish on Thomas Street does good coffee and they also have a nice selection of homemade baked goods to satisfy the cake cravings. You can sit outside too when the weather's fine and watch the world go by.

Greene's on William Street is a bit busy with the blue rinse brigade on Saturday's but again, they do great coffee and some of the most delicious carrot cake I've ever annihilated.

I like the leather sofas in the place upstairs in Arthurs Quay. Nice Coffee and Tea, not expensive either. Good place to chill out and people watch. Not sure about the bun situation. :D

I wouldn't mind knowing where the best Cappuccino can be found in Limerick though...???

Myself and the best friend like to meet up for a chat outside Café on the Row whenever we get the chance. He gets a smoke and a latte, I get tea, sometimes treat myself to a croissant. Judging by recent weather though, the outdoor option might not be the best tomorrow!

Have to agree! I love this place, the cakes are gorgeous :P and the atmosphere is so relaxing. The service is a bit slow though..

When I lived in Limerick many years ago, we used to go to a cafe/restaurant on O' Connell St. called The Baker's Kitchen. I think you had to go downstairs to it. Is it still operating or has it closed?

We were in there when somebody came in to tell us that John Lennon had been shot dead. :(

You're right there, Ron. I'm back in Cork now but I had 3 years in college there and had a great time. But it wasn't a pretty place back then. Each time I go back there now I'm amazed and delighted at what a fine city it is now. The river front is a credit to the city.

Had a toasty and a Cappucino in BBs off Cruises street today. The toasty was barely toasted, more like a slightly warm sandwich and the Cappucino was not a proper Cappucino. It was gross.

I might add that their Hot Chocolate and Muffins are nice though.

There's a really nice place in the Milk Market (that only opens Saturday I think) which does really good coffee, cake, and... cheese, randomly.

shop on corner of catherine st & glentworth st,was called Gleesons, fab coffee & great pastries, but have to sit outside or take away. :)

Went into the Buttery on Bedford Row at the weekend.

Was treating some friends and so I was paying for everything. Was horrified to find that one small cupcake was 3 euro!

3 euro for something you'd swallow in one bite. And they charged 3.99 for a slice of cake. 3.20 for the cappucino.

It came to 19.55 for two cupcakes, a slice of cake and 3 cappucinos

    Outrageous rip-off!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I went to the Buttery yesterday and came to the same conclusion. €3.20 for a very small cappuccino and €3.00 for a small cupcake. Not good value at all, and I won' t be going back any time soon.

Now, that sounds like a real Celtic Tiger-style rip-off alright. I must make a mental note to avoid that place whenever I'm having a coffee & sit-down in that part of town.

In fairness, I have had a dinner in there and it was lovely and in my opinion worth the price which was much in line with everywhere else...

...but cupcakes for 3euro is taking the piss.

Coffee and cupcake were both good in fairness, but shouldn't have been more than €5 for both.

Absolutely. Think 1.50 for the cupcake max.

The cappuccino is quite small for 3.20. A large in nearby places is about 2.80.

Went there for breakfast when it first opened, and had to pay extra for coffee. Tea was included. Food wasn't fantastic, but paying extra for coffee is a big no-no for breakfast imo. Was over 11eu for breakfast including coffee.

    Haven't been back since,.

You should try the insomnia cafe upstairs in easons. Coffee and a bun for some offer price. Can't recall whether it was 4.50 or 3.50 , but considering the muffins are massive and the coffee aint bad, I think it was good value.

I was there with my mom recently - its a bit strange as its kind of away in a corner but the staff were really nice and if you go around the back of the counter area there are a few tables there with views out on to Cruises st. so you can watch the weird and wonderful people of Limerick do their thing!

I've never been to Cafe Noir but I remember going to a nice coffee place in the city near Dunnes. Thought was La Cucina unless they moved out of the city as it seems to show its near Castletroy/UL on Facebook. Looking at google map it was probably Abrabica Coffee shop I went into, I can't remember the name of the one I went to last year but I was sure was La Cucina. I recall it was a little pricey for a small latte. I remember passing Arabica whether or not it was that one I went to but definitely remember the coffee shop being near Dunnes. Brown Thomas does nice coffee too! Don't think there is a Costa in the city there is one in the Cresent.

Twice so far, sambo and coffee the first time and scrambled egg on toast with coffee the second. Food wise it is excellent and I couldn't fault a single thing about it, price wise though it's at the top of the range around town. My toasted ham & cheese with a regular coffee was just over a tenner and the scrambled egg on toast with 2 coffees was about 15. The setting and service are excellent but it's not an everyday place for me purely down to price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,288 ✭✭✭black & white

For a coffee and bun, I'd recommend Fine Things which is downstairs in Arthurs Quay. Every cake is made on site and the coffee is reasonable. If you want to treat yourself, try a macaroon.

Pricey to be fair. 15 Eu for a scrambled egg and 2 coffees.

I'd have to disagree with ye there.
Been a few times now with the kids and herself... Usually on a Sunday morn as a treat for breakfast.
2 coffees 2 REALLY nice breakfasts..smoked salmon/scrambled eggs etc maple syrup on toast for the kids and small juices for under 25 euro is really good value.
One of the few places open on Sunday morns aswell
    Marty.

That really isn't good value. Nor is paying over a tenner for a toastie and a coffee, or 15 euro for a scrambled egg on toast and two coffees.

    It's a bloody rip off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭martyc5674

A healthy breakfast for 2 kids and 2 adults with coffees/juices for under €25 is good value in my book, esp considering the lack of choice in limerick of a Sunday morn.
I think the poster who said 15 for an egg and coffee may have slightly dramatised...
    Anyway I'd recommend the place
    Marty.

I think they mugged you. I'd been thinking of trying that place, I'll give it a miss now. I could buy 2 lots of fish and chips for 15 euro.

I actually looked for the receipt but can't find it, but I did have a look at the menu online and the toastie is 7.95 and americano 2.70, total 10.65 so I was correct on the first one. On the second we had 2 Cappucinos @ 2.80 each and it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that I was charged 9.00 for scrambled egg on toast although that dish is not on the menu. That morning was the morning Granny was in town and it's possible they made a mistake and overcharged me but that is what I was asked for and what I paid, no dramatics.
