Your/You're... and other grammar mistakes

Has anyone else noticed the same grammar mistakes are constantly made on boards? For example:

    Your/You're
    e.g./i.e.
    Advice/Advise
    Choose/Chose

I shall now be a good nerd and give a quick grammar lesson.

    Your/You're

"You're" is a shortened version of "You are". For example, "You are fired" can be changed to "You're fired".

The word "your" has nothing to do with "you're" or "you are", so you cannot say things like "Your fired".

"Your" is used in sentences like this: "Is this your pen?", "How do I get to your house?"

When in doubt, think "should it be you are?" If the answer is no, you can use "your".

    e.g./i.e.

These are sort of the opposite of each other. It's easiest to explain with an example:

I like apples, oranges, pears and plums, i.e. fruit.
I like fruit, e.g. apples, oranges, pears and plums.

    Advice/Advise

I'll also explain this one with an example:

You: I am looking for advice about being fired from my job.
Me: I would advise you to talk to a solicitor.

    Choose/Chose

Choose is sort of for present tense, and chose is for past tense. It's easiest to explain with an example:

Me: You have to choose A or B.
    You: OK, I choose A.
    (and then two weeks later...)
You: I chose A because at the time it seem seemed like a good idea.

    Class dismissed.

Thank you. The 'Your'/'You're' distinction, and so many others, couldn't be said often enough.

    Never mind the troglodytes.

I think there is a private forum where grammar types can all masturbate together?

Unless somebody is being deliberately obtuse, such as text-speaking, correcting their grammar is condescending and makes you look like a punctilious wanker.

What annoys S0crates more than anything else is when people do not know the difference between "lose" and "loose".

Recently S0crates saw a sign in a tattoo parlour saying " if you are late you will loose your appointment".

    No, that is wrong.

"lose" is where you misplace or miss out on something.
"loose" is when something is not tight, or can also be used to describe a female.

I walked past a computer games store in Kilkenny a few years back and laughed in amazement at the sign in the window which read:

"Now on sale, Tomb Raider 6 - Angle of Darkness" - I still wonder if the programming was carried out by Stephen Hawking.

For what it's worth, I do see the valid point that, in the grand scheme of things, grammatical errors are not the biggest issue facing humanity. But I do think that we are slipping backwards in terms of language useage. Text speak is becoming an issue and fewer and fewer people really understand the rules of our language.

My Father is a lecturer in journalism and the Uni has had to introduce a basic grammar module for the students to adress the woeful standard of literacy. If we can't point out the mistakes to people, they won't learn.

Whether or not the rules actually matter once the message is understood is, of course, a personal isuue, but I am saddened by the lack of concern that people show for learning the basics.

That said, I do like sex and now you're post have me confusded.

I frequently see CVs and cover letters partly written in text speak. I also reeeeeally frequently see CVs and cover letters written in terrible English.

The fact that it takes two seconds to use a spell checker - and they didn't bother using one - makes me think these people don't believe communicating properly is important.

Personally I think that's selfish, as the person reading their garbage has to concentrate as they try to figure out what the person is trying to say.

No, they don't. Aren't there another 50 CVs? Just consider it a filter. If it's indecipherable just toss it in the recycle bin.

I can see you're point in that instance, but when they're on an internet forum - whats the point in correcting someones grammar? If they can't spel as good as u, it doesn't make there point less valid.

Again - it's an internet forum. If it bugs you that much put the poster on ignore. Not every post has to be proof read before it's posted, if the poster makes a valid point but mixes up they're grammer - it still shouldnt not take away from the point there making.

'of' replacing 'have' is a personal hatred of mine....I mean the people using it obviously say it in everyday life as well. I can forgive the they're their there or the to two too, but how in the hell do you make have into of?

Have course, I'm sure the guilty are worried what I or other's think, I should of just kept it to myself...

[edit] Oh and the irony of those who've been to college but spell it collage...

while some grammar mistakes wreck my head, i can admit that i've made enough mistakes. but i dont care what i write in my own post (unless its totally unreadable :P), because i don't tend to read what i've just typed, just what everyone else has to say.

anyways. its just nitpicking. theres really no need to point out slight mistakes like that.

I notice a lot of Irish people saying "I seen something" instead of 'I saw something'. I have also noticed many English people in recent years saying "We were stood at the bus stop" instead of 'we were standing at the bus stop'. and "We were sat in the front row" which should be 'we were sitting in the front row'. . .

"We was" is another English one :)

The one that pisses me off is the use of 'infraction' to designate the punition as opposed to the offence. The punishment fits the crime a little too tightly.

Although it's actually worse when people use it as a verb.
