Ways of measuring progress?

I'm currently trying to get good into shape. Specifically I'm looking to decrease my body fat percentage while increasing muscle mass.
Are there any quick ways to check my own progress as I go along, on a week by week basis for example?
The obvious thing would be to keep a record of body measurements as I go along with a tape measure (waist, chest, biceps). Are there any other areas of my body I should be measuring?
Are there better ways of monitoring progress towards my goal?

    • Take photos
    • Take measurements
    • Note how your clothes get looser/tighter
    • Record bodyweight
    • Calculate bodyfat with calipers or various hand-held devices (controversial!)
    • Measure increased VO2 max (potentially expensive)
    • Measure strength increases week on week through your log

Thigh's hold a lot of fat, keep an eye on those.
